These types of games have been done before. This isn't a true RTS nor Tower Defence.

There's tonnes of flash games that work exactly like this and some indie games (1 of the recent humble bundles had a game where you move between bases like this but it had simple graphics).

this is a 3d version of a load of flash games i've have seen like bug wars and civilization wars look them up its the same concept you don't build units they automaticly build and you have to gain cities (hives if its bug wars) which is the same as the platforms here although this does have more features its pretty much the same thing

These types of games are a subgenre of RTS, there are alot of flash games where you have this system of only being able to send units to objectives, you should stop comparing them to games like Starcraft, they are not meant to be like that at all.

It kinda reminds me of the old game "Z" from 1996 how you have to capture different factories or in this case platforms to get different kinds of units, only difference (Except this being more graphicly enhanced and is based in water) is like he say you cant directly controll the units.

so this game is a down graded version of Command&Conquer aucteally i think thats Halo Wars this is a down graded version of that. I also believe that there were a few missions that were primarely water based in C&C though in general your basic command center is on land but for RTS C&C The First Decade beats out any other rts out there and its fairly cheap the first decade also includs a fps version of the game which is fun

@AMDdurden in most games that does not add much of a mechanic so it's only scenery. but if it is that much of a problem it does not just have to be a ocean it could have rivers, islands, shallow areas, deep areas, swamps, icebergs, bays ect.. some of those for scenery and some of those could include game mechanics. and you could include waterfalls none of these need land units you could still have islands in the game without ground units. though alot of these would mean more than just a ocean

The reason that the SOPA vid was so well received was that it was calm, well researched and helpful. There's no point going in blind and reporting bad information.
