The board actually tweaks in the air rather than flipping - and the board is actually turning slightly backside rather than frontside. That's why you never see the underside of his board - because it doesn't flip. It starts to go vertical, tweaks a bit, but never actually completes the flip. That's where the nineties term 'illusion flip' came from, but it's usually applied to frontside flips.

@SwitchRich i kinda see where you're going with your point. but i have to disagree. the reason it looks like an "illusion" hardflip is the way he popped his board for rotation. sure, it rockets a bit, but it's still a frontside pop shove with a kickflip. brandon turner, darren harper, john igei and chet thomas are a few examples who do their hardflips (regular/switch) quite similarly to how ronnie does it.

Check Ronnie's take-off here - the board is going slightly backside rather than frontside, then he tweaks it to give it the 'illusion' flip, before it flops back on itself. He only does them this way when he skates switch interestingly. You actually rarely see them done this this nowdays, and I find them harder strangely enough.
