Introducing guns, plans, cars, thongs, etc. ruined Romeo & Juliet. If it were possible, West Side Story, etc. would've eclipsed Romeo & Juliet, given the resources modern playwrights, writers, & publishers have over Shakespeare & others of his time. To really "remake" Romeo & Juliet, the original setting of medieval Europe (during 100s of years in which the Church tortured & burnt people at will) had to be the "stage."

I watched the DiCaprio "remake" (for no more than a few minutes, that's all I could tolerate) & I had nightmares. I thought it was Dirty Harry having nightmares over his spaghetti western. Romeo & Juliet was not simply a story; it's a story firmly rooted in a imaginary past before the advent of modern ideas, devices, & science. Those were the days of alchemy & magic & fairy tales in an imaginary, alternate universe...

My father died 2 weeks ago. As a child, my mother borrowed this album from the local library and played as she put my brother and myself to sleep. It had been their first date movie. For them, it was very risque in 1968. I think of this song and their love.

My Favourite film ever they were beautiful together! Olivia Hussey was the most stunning looking Girl I have ever cast eyes upon.. I remember seeing this film at Senior School in the 1st Year.. the story of Romeo and Juliet works so well, because they both were just kids. she being only 13. it's not mature love. although they really did love one another. it's stupid love. (not trying to get people upset here) mature love has control. and walks in using wisdom and self control. stupid love. runs and falls into a deep pit and makes sometimes deadly decisions. as these two and countless others in the world have done. over what they felt was the right thing to do. (at the time)

@itsmister2u Disagree. You are ignoring that people married very young in the 14th century (1303 to be exact) and they do this because the average life expectancy was only about 35 years. Most women also died giving birth to their 1st child. And this does not count the onset of disease, wars, and famine. They had to squeeze very ounce of life from the precious short life. Unlike people today who live as if life will never end.
