  • I used the simplest tools possible. I printed out the gear patterns on paper (online gear generator at woodgears.ca), glued and cut the gears from ~1" plywood.

One gear has exactly twice as many teeth as the other, so the path of the light attached to the small gear happens to be exactly straight when it rotates inside a half-circle.

The light is attached at the halfway point of the toothed edge - halfway between the true circumference of the gear and the bottom of the tooth cuts.

  • How did you work out the specific measurements for each gear? Would it be much easier with a gear-drawing program? I'd like to adapt this, but can't quite figure out how to get it accurate enough without much trial-and-error. Any advice you could give me would be much appreciated!

  • Is it hard to get it perfectly centered so that the motion is linear or is there a small amount of lateral motion too?

I am thinking of using a very similar mechanism in a project of mine.

  • Yap,

The dead spot happen in ordinary crankshaft and conrod train mechanism too.

That's why we need a proper FlyWheel.

    Thx for your att.

  • that is very smart

  • I think it will transfer torque better than con rod and crankshaft.

    Is it vice versa motion?

Will it convert to spining motion (gears) if we drive the lamp up and down?

  • @herbid68 1. It certainly seems to transfer torque nicely. 2. Not sure what you mean with respect to vice versa motion, it does move back and forth. 3. I think driving the lamp up and down would require some extra work to get past the dead spots at the top and bottom of the stroke, perhaps with a heavy gear and well lubricated mechanism you could use inertia to follow past the dead spot. Let me know if you build one to see about these questions, I would love to see video of it! -Dano
