Brushtails are far less intelligent than opossums. Like most marsupials, they have a very small brainsize for their body weight. They can however learn to respond to humans for food and do things like keep coming to your porch at the same time at night to get a snack. Given their low intelligence, training them to get food for humans is dangerous as they lack the skills intellect to keep away from dogs/cats etc. that you might have around your house. Cute, but best left alone to ensure survival.
I was wondering- Do you have anything to share as far as what to expect when keeping one? And are they (generally) friendly and easily adapted to being petted and what not? I guess what I'm asking is if i got one, would it be a pet that I could easily interact with and hold and pet, or are these kinds of possums something that I;d be better off getting a gold fish for?
@MissDandyDane You cannot get a Brushtail Possum. My only experience was with this atypical unhealthy one. I cannot say for sure what a normal one would be like.
are brushtails smarter than 4 eyed and virginia opossums? i was thinking of getting a virginia opossum, because i found a breeder online, in the same county as me, but was wondering what you thaught, i have a small colony of sugargliders, and see almost if not all your vids are opossum related, so thaught i would get an experts opinion?
@blowgunking1994 Brushtail is very smart and being larger they are more even tempered, less flighty. You will not find one though so it's a no go. My experience tells me that a Virginia Opossum would be a better pet than a Philander Four-eyed by far.
