I remember it like it was yesterday. I was 8 years old and almost didn't watch...figured Bruins would blow them out of the water. Tonight, I will read "My Leafs Sweater" to my 8 year old son.
Of all the games I watched as a kid I remember this one the most for two reasons. I'm a Leafs fan and Sittler was my favorite player. But I was a goalie and I remember how pissed I was at Cherry for not pulling Dave Reece. Everyone has had a good night and everyone has had a bad one. Screw Cheevers, he should've went between the pipes to save Dave from the humiliation. On a personal note I know Dave, he teaches skating to kids in NH including my son. He's a great guy.
Still remember this game like it was yesterday. Darryl Sittler, Borje Salming, Lanny McDonald, Tiger Williams: thanks for all the great memories guys! GO LEAFS GO!!
really not a great acheivement. this goalie was horrible. ten points yeah but come on the goalie sucked. and the goaltending in general back then was not great. dnt think any goalie from that era could play in the minors now no less in the nhl
@skyroe2 -- dude you have got be the most pathetic fool ever on yahoo... don't make excuses for the goalie... it was a great moment.... you're just a jealous, riduculous fool who know shit about hockey.
@skyroe2 How do you say "really not a great achievement"? 10 POINTS IN A GAME!!! I don't care who was in net or who it was against, that is an unbelievable accomplishment that will never happen unless someone puts me in net against Sidney Crosby. These guys are all professional players who are good enough to play in the NHL. It's an unbelievable achievement.
I remember watching this game - 35 years ago? Man, I am feeling old!! But it could not have happened to a more classy player than Darryl Sittler. A shame he had to play for Ballard, he deserved better.
Toronto lost a ton of Talent in the 1970's do to poor trades and to the the WHA. The players just didn't like playing for Ballard. Anytime a team lets a player like Dave Keon leave you know you have a lousy owner!!!
I got the frameworth 25th edition (2001) commemoration of this night for sale on kijiji. The only one for sale anywhere with the 10 puck -10 pt design.
I was 15 years old.I was sleeping over my friends house.I think there was 1 fight in the game as well.Bob McGill and someone for the Bruins. What a great game to watch.
In this game Darryl Sittler scored from just about every possible angle. He scored from in front of the net, from behind the net, from both sides, a long shot and a tap-in in mid air. It seems like he could do no wrong on this night. Well, almost no wrong. I remember seeing one of his shots ring off the goalpost near the end of the game. If he had scored, that would be goal number 7 in the game. Guess you can't win them all!!!!
Time flies by so mercilessly. Watching the highlites of this game makes me want to reminisce so much even though we may be moving on in years. Besides #27, I also want to pay tribute to #21 and #7. Thank you so much for the wonderful memories. We all dream about something in life. You guys got to live it!!!!
Thank you for posting! I followed Darryl's amazing hockey career since he was a junior with the London Knights. Seems like yesterday. It was wonderful to hear Bill Hewitt's play-by-play and Brian MacFarlane's commentary. Great memories from a time long gone. Happy 35th anniversary, Darryl!!
This happened exactly 35 years today! I watched that game on a Saturday night and I remember it like it was yesterday. Those were the days my friend; wish they were here again. Thanks for the memories!!!!
@Stevessl Wow... you're right, it was 35 years ago exactly. This segment was done in honour of its 20th anniversary, which, 15 years later, means it's been almost as long again. Man that makes me feel old.
@kencar63 Don't forget 1976 was a special year for Darryl Sittler besides this amazing night on Feb 7. I watched him score 5 goals against Philadelphia in a playoff game and of course who can forget what he did for Team Canada against Czechoslovakia later that year (I sure didn't). He scored the game and cup winning goal in overtime to bring home the Canada Cup. The sight of so many great hockey players from this country (many are in the Hockey Hall of Fame) jumping on him was priceless.
@theborealisman. We actually had the top notch dman in Randy Carlyle, who won a Norris Trophy in Pitt. But dumbo Ballard traded him, and George Fergsuon for Dave Burrows. Ferguson was the 2nd line center, who went on to have solid years in Pitt. All we really needed was a 2nd line winger. Palmateer was solid in net. The best trade Ballard ever did was Tiger Williams and Jerry Butler, for Rick Vaive and Bill Derlago.
@Kencar63. A little neurotic aren't we? Hmmm, Versteeg was a major factor in the Hawks winning the cup last year, but in your so called mind, he is not 2nd line material. Even though he is on pace to have 25-30 goals.Neither is Grabovski i suppose, who is also on pace to have 25-30 goals. All i have to say to you, is that the best thing for a hangover is to have another drink!
I guess you don't believe that Phaneuf is a 1st or 2nd line dman.
Leafs r giving up puck way 2 much, thats the big prob.
The Honest truth. I was a Sittler fan and i was in grade 6 at the time. I told my Montreal Canadians friend who was a big Lafleur fan, you watch the game tomorrow Sittler will have a big game. Sure enough i couldn't believe it, neither could my Canadians friend. As they use to say, you have to be good to be lucky, and lucky to be good. BTW those were the names we called each other when ever we played soccer. Those were the days.
@tymeformike. This story let's you know that i am a devout Leafs fan. When that Sittler 10 point game was going on, i was listening to it on radio. On a short wave radio in New Jersey,US.
I now live in Colorado, still follow the Leafs. Man it's painful, this team needs a first line center something fierce.
@kbinco Yeah, with a first-line centre, a first-line right winger, a first-line left winger, two first-line defencemen, a first-line goalie, a second-line centre, a second-line right winger, a second-line left winger, two second-line defencemen, and a second-line goalie, yeah, they should be all right ;-)
Thirty four years on, this performance by Sittler, still remains the greatest one game offensive display in NHL history. His record wiil likely stand for decades. Oddly, most hockey fans forget about Jim Harrison's 10 point game ( 3 goals, 7 assists) for the Edmonton Oilers in the WHA, also in the 1970's.
Haha Chessy put the towel over his head. Darryl Sittler great all time Maple Leaf. I remember watching this game. It was a Saturday night hockey night in canada game. I expected the Bruins to win because they usually beat the Leafs back then but saw a great piece of hockey history instead!
yeah man I remember,I was 16,it was a Saturday night and had just walked my girlfriend home after we had Pizza at JJ's Pizza Palace. When I got home it was around 10:00 and my brother shouted at me,"You misses it,Sittler's got 8 points"!! He got two more for 10 points and I missed it because of JJ's,Pizza and a girl named Lorraine.
I remember watching this on my little b&w tv on Boston's TV-38. I was a fan of Dave Reece ,an American goalie was rare, and i had been telling my friends how the B's had this kid who was for real. The sad thing is that I don't think he ever played again in the league and until this game he had been solid. I would like to hear his side and what ever became of him...Grapes should have made Cheesy go in though, he did Reece wrong.sigh....still pisses me off.
Apparently, Reese was very dejected after the game and his grief became unbearable when he learned hed been sent to the minors.
Legend has it he decided to end his life and on a cold night jumped on the train tracks before an oncoming train. In what must have been a bitter reminder for him of the Sittler night, the train went between his legs.
Well thats great to know, I was a 13 year old Boston area kid who saw him as somebody who reached the top, and he did. I never came clsoe but even at 46 I still dream
i was at the gardens that night darryl lit it up.i cannot describe the electricity in the air, everyone screaming and looking at each other wondering is this real?when he scored from behind the net for his 10th point,we were in hockey heaven or somewhere i cannot explain it.i tried to rip out that old red seat that i did not use much that night.that was special.
