Wow... I wad only 13 when I went to the Heritage Classic in Edmonton... Great memories and wonderful experience..... The one that started regular season outdoor games.
The mother of all outdoor hockey games was Michigan State University which came up with the idea for it's annual game with the Michigan Wolverines. The NHL picked up on the marketing success of that game to create what is now the annual NHL Winter Classic.
@asambrano1 Actually LA Kings and NY Rangers played an exhibition outdoor game at Las Vegas, don't ask me how they managed to pull it off, no idea it was in sep. 21 1991, that was the 1st ever outdoor game in both college and NHL
12/11/10 at Michigan Stadium (the Big House). UM vs MSU, me and 108,000 others will be there. Shatters the attendance record by almost 34,000 fans.

awesome video i saw the buffalo game but i didnt see the heritage classic or the cold war game played outdoors

It was on new years day 2008 at Ralph Wilson stadium in Buffalo.
