Shells, eh? Reminds me of the Shadow of the Colossus fur / grass shader.

you need to add some shadows in there, obviously dont do it the brute force way of doing actual shadows. Simply darken it at the lower shells, trust me it will make it look a million times better, and give the grass real depth
