Actually, its quite common with smaller helo's. Especially when coming from a high altitude drop off, called "scooping out" I believe. The pilot may experience higher torque percentage when he comes off the pad due to the drop off. So instead of yanking the collective up to his chest and possibly cause the head to over torque, he scoops it out to pick up speed and eventually altitude.
He did it with right pedal on a 350, that's the conservative (safer) way to turn, as it uses more power to the tail rotor, he could always ease off the pedals if the nose swung too far around. Better than turning left, then having to use huge pedal if the nose snaps too far around...

that was actually quite a good method dropping off the building and then picking up speed. I doubt he was supposed to do that though.
