Lights like these were observed by many over the iron range in N. MN. At 5AM on feb2 2010. There were a few really bright ones, and 50 to 100 in total. I received multiple calls from Iron miners, and went out and looked for myself. These were not Northern Lights, and I have never seen anything like them. "Light source on the ground" is not a possibly unless the wolves had spot lights. And they were white light, and perfectly vertical.

Ok I found after searching they say, it is lights from the ground reflecting on ice crystals floating high up in the air. Apparently even on a fairly clear night there must be some floating around up there.

No they are not search lights, but they almost look like it. They were scattered all over the sky and some slowly faded. I was thinking they were something like northern lights type of thing.

I don't think they look similar at all, and not at same latitude as sun - in fact it was at night.

The glow is from the fires from the oil fields that are on the ground beneath them. I saw them in Iraq, too. They were flickering and the same color as fires below them. Probably ice in the sky or something. It was cold when we started seeing them. Cool looking.

Ok found the answer on another site. There are light sources on the ground and the atmospheric conditions are reflecting it back to us - cool, but not supernatural. When you see a bronzelike object though - look out for weirdness.

Negative Ghost Rider, they are not flares. Flares flicker while they are burning. These lights are steady.

I speculate that they are stars shining through an inversion layer.

false, when the artillery shells and gun fire produce gas, and when the weather in a desert or tundra changes from 90 to -10 farnheit, it will almost always cause the northern lights affect

Just cause one is in the military does not mean they know all. The military has flares that are familiar to most soldiers and civilians, and others that are not. you can be sure these are nothing but flares.
