revell is notorious for the gaps in between parts, which is a shame since they have pretty nice rivet/panel line details imo. too bad they're raised, it's all lost when everything's sanded down with filler.
@jamiekenta Well, I think this is another old Monogram kit reboxed by Revell... Revell actually releases very few REVELL kits, they tend to rebox anything from Hasegawa to Italeri and even Heller and old Frog kits.. whatever they can get their hands on, I guess! The Revell original kits of the last few years have always held very higfh quality in toolings, accuracy and detail.. :)
@BasicModelling really? that's interesting. I'm working on a 1/48 dauntless by revell (re-release) and I love the rivet details and panel lines (if only they weren't raised!!) but the gaps are just horrendous lol. it has an incredible lack of cockpit detail, but it makes for a fun scratch build project. It is a very nice kit, don't get me wrong, it's a fun weekend build or challenging project, just wish the parts fit was better.
@jamiekenta Yes, the Dauntless is an old Monogram kit as well.. if you look at the undersurface of one of the stabilizers you're bound to find the letters MM and a year.. also maybe inside the fuselage or inside one of the wing parts, unless Revell has had them removed from the toolings.. Haven't seen the kit but I know the (bad) habits of Monogram.. :) Personally I like the old kits for the same reasons as you, they're a bit of a challenge but good fun overall.. :)
Brilliant build! I still can't believe that 34,000 of 'em were built! Nice music by the way :) Looks like a decent kit :) Would you recommend it? Can you use tip-ex as filler? I never knew that!... :) :)
@2002And Yes, I'd definetely recommend the kit.. I think my bad canopy was a one off, I ws just unlucky there... This kit comes in a few different boxings, like Revell or Revell-Monogram.. with different decal options! You just have to keep an eye open, it should still be readily available, I think.. :0)
@BasicModelling I just built the same kit and the canopy was worse than yours, also the bottom intake was deformed with a large gap. all fixed with filler
@TheRocketSilo It's probably quite old by now.. and one of the first things to go on an old kit that has been produced in their 10.000's and more, is the clear bits.. :( That is a fact.. as shown..
@everythingman987 I'll look out for it, I like to build a series of Republic Aircraft, as they're all related to the P-47 in one way or another.. i.e made by the same company.. :)
@everythingman987 Dayton National AF Museum? haha they have a pretty nice modelling section. especially the minicraft 1/144 kits! they never have those in hobby shops!!
@angryace13 Thank you.. I don't build an awful lot of German planes, but now and again it makes for a nice change.. :) And by the way, there's nothing wrong with your models, they look good. :)
im glad you enjoy my models XD, but you have some incredible Detail on your G-10 Messerschmitt. i see you also use Floor polish similar to Future for a clear coat XD.
@angryace13 Yes, Future is (or was) called 'Klear' over here.. and it is basically the same stuff.. very useful to use as a clear coat, decal solution and to glue canopies in place.. Excellent stuff!! :)
Nice work. I often use that white glue trick on smaller scale canopies myself. You should get an air brush. They are real easy to use and can add a lot of depth to your paint scheme. By the way, BF109s didn't have seat cushions, the pilot sat on his parachute as a seat cushion. Again, nice looking model.
@KEM451 I'd use an airbrush by nmow, if I only had somewhere to use it.. If I ever win the lottery I'll get a bigger house with a dedicated hobbyroom, then I can start airbrushing too.. :) :)
@HeartGoldMVP The kit is the same, the decal options may be different.. :) :) It's a nice kit, I hope your canopy is ok, as mine was slightly damaged.. :P
@kf103 Yes, it has been reboxed a few times.. It's a good kit, but if I remember correctly the canopy was damaged with this one.. :P Hope yours is ok..
@RAMIAM86 My last model (the 2-seat Hurricane) took 18 months.. but I didn't build that Hurri in a hurry!! Normally it takes one to two weeks.., if I don't rush it... :)
@RAMIAM86 Not many models are built totally without filler, I can only think of the Revell and Academy Thunderbolts, which can be built without adding any filler, if you go carful with them.. a big kit like the B-29 would need quite a lot, I would imagine.. :)
@BasicModelling the Tamiya 1/48 Bf 109 E-4/7 is the best kit i have built, (great fit and superb detail). Have u built it? If you havent, I greatly recommend it!
@HeartGoldMVP I haven't realy built ANY Tamiya aeroplane kits, in any scale.. I think I have a Foecke Wulf A-3 in 1/72 scale, somewhere.. but that's about it! Looking forward to that build, though, as everyone keeps telling how good the Tamiya kits are.. :) I will make it a captured Fw 190 in RAF colours..
@HeartGoldMVP It will be a while yet, I have a lot of other projects on the go.. but I hope to get it done before too long.. :) I also picked up decals for some Hurricanes today, including a captured Mk.IIc in Japanese colours.. :) :)
@BasicModelling I just completed today a Hasegawa 1/48 Messerschmitt Bf 109 G-4 'Herman Graf' but I failed in the middle of its build (propeller and painting) so I decided to make a wreck aircraft diorama, I will release a video probably tomorrow so stay tuned!
very nice model...made it by myself also.. the G 10 was a very good fighter, very fast and daedly. you decided for a high altitude paintscheme?nice and smple :) I like it :)
@strarscreamtheking Thank you.. :) As I brushpaint I'm not very good a German camo, plus I genuinly liked this scheme, so that was two good reasons to paint it this way.. :) Glad you liked it.. :)
Not sure, I'm far from a Messershmitt expert.. my field of (very little) expertise lies with the Hawker Hurricane and the Republic P-47 Thunderbolt.. :)
I was at Revell Venice and was the model shop lead person for the Revell 1/48 109. I used the John Beaman drawings. The model was built to 1/32 scale and then reduced to 1/48 in the tooling. I still have the wooden patterns and a resin model that I made from the original epoxy patterns that we created in the shop. Revell was originally going to reduce that terrible 1/32 109 to 1/48. NO!
The Venice Revell model shop closed in 1983, I was one of the last to leave as the plant closed.
Another masterpiece :) I wish I could see all those you´ve done till now together...
Just one question on modelling material: are decal fix and satin varnish incompatible? I often finish my models with a satin varnish cote to give them a more "metalic" look, but haven´t used decal fix ever yet; mainly to solve the problem of the transparent film of the decals. I fear that if these products are incompatible they may become an opaque white layer that hides the decals, or something like that.
Do you mean 'Humbrol' Decal Fix?? I have only ever used it once, and at that time it was on a satin finish.. and it just wouldn't work at all.. I always use 'Johnsons Klear' Floor Polish to both 'varnish' the model, and to set the decals.. it works a treat.. EVERY time!! :) To remove any marks or blemishes I then varnish the model again, using a matt, satin or gloss varnish depending on the desired effect.. that hepls keeping the decals in place as well.. :)
must admit, i love modelling the ww2 german fighters the stuka and bf109's, but my main love is the uboat... im still stuck on decisions on which model to do first.. plane or sub.. or even armor... oh the choices...
Well, concidering Revell is a German company, I guess they're making an extra effort with the Luftwaffe stuff.. :) I have built one of their Stukas in 1/72.. and have both an Airfix kit (which I willl make as an Italian Stuka) and the Academy kit to build at some point.. :)
My local shop has a small sortiment of kits. ell, quite a lot actually.. but he takes orders as well, and if there's anything you really want, he normally gets it home within a week, if he can. :)
The only thing I have against ordering my stuff is that I often then can't afford to buy anything new and exciting on his shelf, if he has all the kits I have ordered waiting for me when I get in the shop :) :)
i have a model BF-109, but it is a earlier version, and a custum paintjob, actully i have 2, different paintjobs, they will appear in a stop-animation event, Heroes of the Luftwaffe
I have a whole stash full of 109's, mainly E-3 & 4's.. but they will be built as RAF and Russian captured planes mainly.. I may do one as a Luftwaffe version, just to compare.. :) I also have another one on order.. :)
Trust YOU.. even the Gerbil was happy with my panel lines this time.. :) I don't do washes .. yet! When you brush paint they have a tendency to show up the brush lines as well.. not just the panel lines! I did the scheme because it was unusual, and I have an 'all over BLACK' 109 E-4 on order too, in 1/72 scale.. just so you know! :) Rigging is easy enough, at least when it comes to aereals..
Not sure where to obtain 'elasticated thread' from now, maybe 'Aeroclub' does it.. but it's very versatile, and can be painted in any shade, without losing it's flexibility. And the flexibility is key, as it stops it from snapping or breaking if accidentally handled. :)
Right now I'm just glad to be doing models, to be honest.. I have a feeling I won't get much built fairly soon, as my attention will be elsewhere.. :)
Just beware that those enamels may take a while to dry.. I have a dust / speck covered upper wing of a Curtiss F3F-3 to prove it. Johnsons KLEAR applied soonish after spraying helps to protect the paint and will also allow earlier handling.. This will be at your own risk though, but it worked for me! Just wish I had thought of it before the wing got dusty.. As far as I know the G-10 as pictured was a nightfighter, yes.. ICM has issued a Bf 109 E-3 or similar, in a all over black NF scheme too.
I may treat myself to that kit (1/48 scale) when normality eventually returns.. :) It's only £7.50, I think.. The clips were sampled from 'Aviation Videos'.. That's the name I have on the shortcut anyway. Couldn't use any of my own Hendon footage / photos due to bad light.. I must have missed more than I thought at Hendon, but I sure hope to go again next year. They have a Bf 109 I didn't see at all.. :(
Good idea.. I always spray outside! Don't know how familiar the E-4 is (yes, it's an E-4 in 1/72 scale, not an E-3 in 1/48, my mistake), but it is a revised tooling, which hopefully means it's improved from whatever kit they based it on originally.. I will definetely get one.. :)
Great pictures of the real thing! The kit looks pretty good from where I'm standing. I always enjoy a good step by step assembly video :)
Did you test fit before you found that gap? White glue seemed effective. I tried my clear epoxy the other day and it is very clear, but possibly a tad heavy for whole canopies onm flying models. I reccomed you check it out though.
It's a very basic kit, but you can jazz it up no end with after market stuff.. a route I stayed well clear off! It normally costs you more than you paid for the kit originally.. I didn't test fit, I could see it on the sprue allready! But now I know the wonders of white glue, I wasn't too worried! I'll look into the epoxy, though.. it may be a good idea.. :)
It was more to cover up that ejector pinmark.. RAF pilots used to sit on their parachutes, not sure what they did in the Luftwaffe, so I put a cushion there, as you often see in cock-pit photos.. :) It also showed one pictured in the seatbelt instructions.. :)
It helps to distract.. I like to build anything as long as it's not too modern.. I draw the line at late 70's, early 80's.. :) After that the camo's get boring and the planes all look the same.. :) Re. stuff.. we're still waiting..
I saw a man very affectionately pat / stroke the prop of the Hurricane in the Battle of Britain Hall at Hendon.. then he kissed it! He didn't do that to the Bf 109.. :)
And no, he wasn't a WWII vet..
But yes, I have to agree that the Typhoon / Tempest were perhaps not quite as cuddly, even though they stemmed from the same family..
I 'made' the Ark Royal when i was about 11, lets just say the bottom never fitted and I was waiting to paint it until after I glued everthing together :( Then I gave up! Plenty of tiny little fairey barracudas on deck.
I met a clubmember in the Hobby Shop yesterday, he's building two carriers right now, which is a bit odd, concidering he is nainly a 1/72 Spitfire fanatic.. but now and again it's good to try something else.. :) I may well build a carrier of some kind at some point, at least it will have planes on it, even if it is a ship.. :)
The messerschmitt is my favourite ww2 plane. I'm currently building the airfix bf 109 g6. I might do a vid on it. Love your painting! it looks realy good!
very nice indeed but I have a great suggestion: why not be a thief of a luftwaffe major and sell this plane to the Finns? You could get 40,000 RM for the deal!
I did actually buy the kit of him a few years ago.. but that's when he was just an employee in the then local toy shop. When that foiled he decided to start one of his own, it just took him longer than he anticipated.. and now he has the recession to fight against as well.. but I hope he will survive, it's a good place to go for a friendly chat and a cup of coffee.. and to browse the latest in plastic.. :)
The bare plastic spots are easily cured with a dab of paint.. preferably the same shade as was on there first!
This hobby knows no ages, and it's easy to return to at any time.. I never thought I'd build another model in my life, until I happened to pass a shop with the old Airfix P51 D kit on display! In Swedish markings.. my son and I built it together and it gave me a taste for more..

I picked up a Revell 1/48 Stuka for $30.00, and I must say, (Either coincidience or truth) Revell makes AWESOME German aircraft!
JustPureModels 2 years ago
Well, concidering Revell is a German company, I guess they're making an extra effort with the Luftwaffe stuff.. :) I have built one of their Stukas in 1/72.. and have both an Airfix kit (which I willl make as an Italian Stuka) and the Academy kit to build at some point.. :)
BasicModelling 2 years ago
Hey... I aleady watched this!!!! See you on another video then... :)

I recommend my Bv 138 video, if you haven't seen that one as well already.. :)

I was at my hobby shop yesterday and my hopesof finding a 109 G-6 I fond a cool E-3 from the battle of france.
terminator363 2 years ago
Yes, there's plenty of Bf 109's on the market today.. which is good.. :)
BasicModelling 2 years ago
Well my local shop is booming with buisness so the models are slowly running out, they said that they would order some stuff................
terminator363 2 years ago
My local shop has a small sortiment of kits. ell, quite a lot actually.. but he takes orders as well, and if there's anything you really want, he normally gets it home within a week, if he can. :)
BasicModelling 2 years ago
Well I have pretty much orderd every thing I have! :D
terminator363 2 years ago
The only thing I have against ordering my stuff is that I often then can't afford to buy anything new and exciting on his shelf, if he has all the kits I have ordered waiting for me when I get in the shop :) :)
BasicModelling 2 years ago
Thats true
terminator363 2 years ago
i have a model BF-109, but it is a earlier version, and a custum paintjob, actully i have 2, different paintjobs, they will appear in a stop-animation event, Heroes of the Luftwaffe
OperationThrax 2 years ago
I have a whole stash full of 109's, mainly E-3 & 4's.. but they will be built as RAF and Russian captured planes mainly.. I may do one as a Luftwaffe version, just to compare.. :) I also have another one on order.. :)
BasicModelling 2 years ago
I wouldn't believe correctionfluid can fill gaps.. But if it does, that's good!!
Nice build, as usual.. A little too monotone and glossy for my likings however. Add a wash! =)
You need to teach me how to rig properly aswell...
myhuxpo 2 years ago
Trust YOU.. even the Gerbil was happy with my panel lines this time..
BasicModelling 2 years ago
Not sure where to obtain 'elasticated thread' from now, maybe 'Aeroclub' does it.. but it's very versatile, and can be painted in any shade, without losing it's flexibility. And the flexibility is key, as it stops it from snapping or breaking if accidentally handled. :)
BasicModelling 2 years ago
Yes like I always tell him, add a wash! Especially on a light single colour model like this :)
GerbilEssences 2 years ago
Right now I'm just glad to be doing models, to be honest.. I have a feeling I won't get much built fairly soon, as my attention will be elsewhere.. :)
BasicModelling 2 years ago
I wish I was able to assemble kits like that. Yet another quality model.
5/5
StanierJack 2 years ago
Thank you.. I try.. :) :)
BasicModelling 2 years ago
Single colour scheme, was it a nightfighter? I can clearly see all the panel lines, good job.
PS.
I found some cheap enamel sprays in Wilkinsons, should be great for a thin outer coat on tissue models.
Where did you find those good clips>?
GerbilEssences 2 years ago
Just beware that those enamels may take a while to dry.. I have a dust / speck covered upper wing of a Curtiss F3F-3 to prove it. Johnsons KLEAR applied soonish after spraying helps to protect the paint and will also allow earlier handling.. This will be at your own risk though, but it worked for me! Just wish I had thought of it before the wing got dusty.. As far as I know the G-10 as pictured was a nightfighter, yes.. ICM has issued a Bf 109 E-3 or similar, in a all over black NF scheme too.
BasicModelling 2 years ago
I may treat myself to that kit (1/48 scale) when normality eventually returns.. :) It's only £7.50, I think.. The clips were sampled from 'Aviation Videos'.. That's the name I have on the shortcut anyway. Couldn't use any of my own Hendon footage / photos due to bad light.. I must have missed more than I thought at Hendon, but I sure hope to go again next year. They have a Bf 109 I didn't see at all.. :(
BasicModelling 2 years ago
I think they have a tropical 109G!
GerbilEssences 2 years ago
Yes, that is the one I missed.. 9 hours just wasn't long enough in the place.. to see it all and see it properly.. :)
BasicModelling 2 years ago
I will spray outside on a hot day, on tissue. That ICM E-3 nightfighter sounds familiar.
GerbilEssences 2 years ago
BasicModelling 2 years ago
Great pictures of the real thing! The kit looks pretty good from where I'm standing. I always enjoy a good step by step assembly video :)
Did you test fit before you found that gap? White glue seemed effective. I tried my clear epoxy the other day and it is very clear, but possibly a tad heavy for whole canopies onm flying models. I reccomed you check it out though.
GerbilEssences 2 years ago
It's a very basic kit, but you can jazz it up no end with after market stuff.. a route I stayed well clear off! It normally costs you more than you paid for the kit originally.. I didn't test fit, I could see it on the sprue allready! But now I know the wonders of white glue, I wasn't too worried! I'll look into the epoxy, though.. it may be a good idea.. :)
BasicModelling 2 years ago
Made a seat cushion? Some comfort. ☺
EmCSpiteri 2 years ago
It was more to cover up that ejector pinmark.. RAF pilots used to sit on their parachutes, not sure what they did in the Luftwaffe, so I put a cushion there, as you often see in cock-pit photos.. :) It also showed one pictured in the seatbelt instructions.. :)
BasicModelling 2 years ago
You really Revell in this model making lark!
I prefer these old planes with the spinny round things at the front.
(Hope the other stuff is looking positive - B & L)
randomwritings 2 years ago
It helps to distract.. I like to build anything as long as it's not too modern.. I draw the line at late 70's, early 80's.. :) After that the camo's get boring and the planes all look the same.. :) Re. stuff.. we're still waiting..
BasicModelling 2 years ago
I know what you mean... after the Sex Pistols it all got boring!
randomwritings 2 years ago
very nice job!!!
love the german planes
yeungrulz 2 years ago
So do I.. they generally look like mean killer machines, unlike the more 'cuddly' RAF fighters.. and the paintscheme was easy enough on this one.. :)
BasicModelling 2 years ago
I wouldn't call a typhoon/tempest cuddly but yes I get your point. Beauty and Der Beast!
GerbilEssences 2 years ago
I saw a man very affectionately pat / stroke the prop of the Hurricane in the Battle of Britain Hall at Hendon.. then he kissed it! He didn't do that to the Bf 109.. :)
And no, he wasn't a WWII vet..
But yes, I have to agree that the Typhoon / Tempest were perhaps not quite as cuddly, even though they stemmed from the same family..
BasicModelling 2 years ago
Er yes, don't get too carried away!
GerbilEssences 2 years ago
I don't do carriers.. apart from one, which I botched beyond belief.. but not neccesarily beyond repair.. :)
BasicModelling 2 years ago
I 'made' the Ark Royal when i was about 11, lets just say the bottom never fitted and I was waiting to paint it until after I glued everthing together :( Then I gave up! Plenty of tiny little fairey barracudas on deck.
GerbilEssences 2 years ago
I met a clubmember in the Hobby Shop yesterday, he's building two carriers right now, which is a bit odd, concidering he is nainly a 1/72 Spitfire fanatic.. but now and again it's good to try something else.. :) I may well build a carrier of some kind at some point, at least it will have planes on it, even if it is a ship.. :)
BasicModelling 2 years ago
haha
you didn't even need to paint it.

It's very much painted, thank you.. in the shade of RLM 76, to be exact.. :)

terminator363 2 years ago
I'm going to do a G-6 in Finnish markings at some point.. :)
BasicModelling 2 years ago
Please do the bat one :)
GerbilEssences 2 years ago
I think I only have one set of Finnish after market decals for the G-6.. can't recall if there's a bat or not.. :)
Airfix's new G-6 also comes in Finnish markings, I think.. but the advert / picture shows the post-war roundels..

Some turn out better than others.. I enjoyed this one, not over challenging but a couple of minor problems to solve.. :)
Thank you!
BasicModelling 2 years ago
very nice indeed but I have a great suggestion: why not be a thief of a luftwaffe major and sell this plane to the Finns? You could get 40,000 RM for the deal!
bye:)

I'm sure the Finns have a couple collecting dust in a museum somewhere.. :)
BasicModelling 2 years ago
oh sure, they have the real thing but a model from the great basic himself? no contest lol :)

I'll probably force my friend the Hobby Shop owner to display it in his cabinet.. at gunpoint if need be! :)
BasicModelling 2 years ago
yeah, and I've got the big Hermann gun pointing his way from just 4000 miles away...he'll cave in no doubt :)
granskare 2 years ago
I did actually buy the kit of him a few years ago.. but that's when he was just an employee in the then local toy shop. When that foiled he decided to start one of his own, it just took him longer than he anticipated.. and now he has the recession to fight against as well.. but I hope he will survive, it's a good place to go for a friendly chat and a cup of coffee.. and to browse the latest in plastic.. :)

ok, sad joke but it's just past 10 in the morning.

I'll take your word for it ;)

Nice one - as usual! I always found that by painting on the sprue, you would get little spots of unpainted plastic when you removed the part.
See you when you get back Rob - looking forward to more builds. Am even getting the taste back myself and may have a proper dabble at it again soon!
BradThunder 2 years ago
The bare plastic spots are easily cured with a dab of paint.. preferably the same shade as was on there first!
This hobby knows no ages, and it's easy to return to at any time.. I never thought I'd build another model in my life, until I happened to pass a shop with the old Airfix P51 D kit on display! In Swedish markings.. my son and I built it together and it gave me a taste for more..
