I never watch this show (or any "reality" show for that matter). I think this age limit thing is ridiculous. Should they just shoot all artists over 29? Age and wisdom are just not sexy enough for television? Experience cannot possibly equate to talent? All of the above? What?

So true - I see you got a lot of "dislikes" Clearly the 232 dislikes are agist as well and don't see it as a valid predjudice. They are blind to the injustice of age discrimination - they think it is justified.

I have nothing against the viewers, but I do want them to think about the fact that American Idol does discriminates against people of age (Which is just as bad discriminating against people of color, or religion). My real beef is against the show. Of course Age discrimination isn't the only wrong or bad thing about American Idol. There is a lot more that I could say. Sorry for taking so long to write back.

However some people still seem think that they have somehow discovered something unique in their realization that it is not real.

@musictjr Well, I thought that it was against the viewers. First, the fact that the singer has a likable tune with his guitar makes whatever lyrics he is singing irrelevant because we like to listen to "good tunes" and hardly care about what people say in their lyrics anymore. Also, the lyrics suggest that people think: if you're too "old", or if you don't look good enough, you're not winning. No matter just how good your talent is, your age or looks will be held against you.

I really don't care who won, but to assume that he is "the best" because he won, is flawed logic. that's like saying that "They are on the radio, so they must be good" . When in truth being on the radio doesn't always mean you are good. It just means that more money was put behind securing radio airplay for that artist. A sad truth about the current mainstream music industry.

That was not a bust on you, the Disney comment. Just a sad commentary on the crap artists that are manufactured for exploitation. I really enjoyed you comments about true singer/songwriters. My favorite artists are the ones that can weave a story or elicit emotion with not just their vocals but with the words they string together. Listen to just about any Dave Matthews song, especially 'Back You Up' for a great examples of a true artist.
@dkone10101 Not at all. Yours are some of the best comments I have ever read. I agree that A.I. is just a step above the Disney teen machine. It's to bad, because we could use an A.I. style show that centers more on what music the contestant can create more than how well can they sing someone else's song. Such a show could have an enormously positive effect on music and the music industry (so long as they don't have an age limit LOL).

I think it's hilarious, watch the reactions from the judges that he choose. It's obviously supposed to be funny and he's kinda making fun of himself in light of being over the age limit. American Idol is not and has never been for real musicians anyway, although I like Daughtry.

I thought this was interesting. Good job musictjr. The title was misleading but I'm not crying about it. I wouldn't have seen this if it hadn't been. I'm not sure there is anything illegal about age discrimination when awarding a contract. I don't think AI is actually hiring the winner as an employee. Us old guys need to figure out another way to sell ourselves.

I don't think we need laws to combat ageism. I think we need activism and a change in the public attitude. Musicians/songwriters (if they do their job right) get better with age. I don't expect deep insight into the nature of the human condition from a kid LOL. But that doesn't mean I won't give credit (and be thrilled) when it does happen.

As far as those people you mentioned, well, if they were musicians, and a lot of them who you mentioned were, that kind of takes them half way to being an artist, but still not an artist. Sorry.
You can still NOT be an artist & be of great historical importance. Albert Einstein wasn't an artist & he was probably the most important, influential person of the 20th Century. Just because I say singers are not artists, doesn't mean they're not important or influential; of course they are. Elvis didn't write any of his songs, & he was probably the most influential person in Rock n Roll. But, don't tell me Elvis & Lennon /McCartney are on the same level as far as artistry. We know they aren't.
Singers shouldn't be regarded as just "entertainers." They are also artists. Singing is a form of expression, which, I believe, is art (anything that shows expression in a creative way). They have to hone their skills and put up with the pressures of outside stress factors, and they do it not to simply be called "entertainers," but to regarded as an artist as well. Writers and singers go hand in hand. They need each other, you know.
@Feenachan1 - what does honing skills & putting up with pressures have to do with someone being an artist or not? If they are doing that as a way to be labeled an artist, then, they would do better to spend their time picking up a pen & seeing if they can write, a song, or a poem, or whatever, if they are worried that people will view them as "just" entertainers.
Actors as well, they are not artists either. Standing up & mouthing words others have put in your mouth doth not an artist make.
But the thing is, is that they both rely on each other, it's just equity. Some singers can both write AND sing, and that's just as good, but, sometimes, the singer might need some of the creativity done for them. Writers might not be able to sing their own work, so they might want to rely on other singers. The art is the reliance, or the usage of both writing AND singing. There is no one or the other, otherwise we wouldn't include singing in the artistic theater.

When in truth being on the radio doesn't always mean you are good. It just means that more money was put behind securing radio airplay for that artist. That was not a bust on you, the Disney comment. Just a sad commentary on the crap artists that are manufactured for exploitation. I really enjoyed you comments about true singer/songwriters. My favorite artists are the ones that can weave a story or elicit emotion with not just their vocals but with the words they string together. Listen to just about any Dave Matthews song, especially 'Back You Up' for a great examples of a true artist.

It's to bad, because we could use an A.I. style show that centers more on what music the contestant can create more than how well can they sing someone else's song. Such a show could have an enormously positive effect on music and the music industry (so long as they don't have an age limit LOL).

I am referring to an audience that does not care about lyrics, but would rather have the 'new shiny thing'. AI is a step or so above the Disney 'teen popstar of the month factory. I think it's hilarious, watch the reactions from the judges that he choose. It's obviously supposed to be funny and he's kinda making fun of himself in light of being over the age limit. American Idol is not and has never been for real musicians anyway, although I like Daughtry.

I thought this was interesting. Good job musictjr. The title was misleading but I'm not crying about it. I wouldn't have seen this if it hadn't been. I'm not sure there is anything illegal about age discrimination when awarding a contract. I don't think AI is actually hiring the winner as an employee. Us old guys need to figure out another way to sell ourselves.

I knew that using a misleading title would upset some, but I dont want to preach to the choir. Ageism isnt the only bad thing about A.I. But I want to confront the shows fans with at least one of its ugly truths.

I don't think we need laws to combat ageism. I think we need activism and a change in the public attitude. Musicians/songwriters (if they do their job right) get better with age. Your comment that American Idol is just a singing competition, & they don't care about musicianship or songwriting ability, is spot-on. Good singers are a dime a dozen. But, people that can write a song....people that can write a GOOD song, are few & far between. Singers are entertainers. Songwriters are artists. Big difference.
And no, I don't think these people will be remembered 20 years down the road. I actually think that American Idol will be remembered as a low point in American music.

You can still NOT be an artist & be of great historical importance. Albert Einstein wasn't an artist & he was probably the most important, influential person of the 20th Century. Just because I say singers are not artists, doesn't mean they're not important or influential; of course they are. Elvis didn't write any of his songs, & he was probably the most influential person in Rock n Roll. But, don't tell me Elvis & Lennon /McCartney are on the same level as far as artistry. We know they aren't.

Singers shouldn't be regarded as just "entertainers." They are also artists. Singing is a form of expression, which, I believe, is art (anything that shows expression in a creative way). They have to hone their skills and put up with the pressures of outside stress factors, and they do it not to simply be called "entertainers," but to regarded as an artist as well. Writers and singers go hand in hand. They need each other, you know.

But the thing is, is that they both rely on each other, it's just equity. Some singers can both write AND sing, and that's just as good, but, sometimes, the singer might need some of the creativity done for them. Writers might not be able to sing their own work, so they might want to rely on other singers. The art is the reliance, or the usage of both writing AND singing. There is no one or the other, otherwise we wouldn't include singing in the artistic theater.
