This portion of the show always shocked me because I remember reading disparaging comments that Sondheim made about ALW in years past. I remember Sondheim saying that ALW was not even a musician and had refused to socialize with him at an awards show in NYC. Glad that they've come to some sort of truce with each other and can enjoy each other's accomplishments.
ok i know this is a joke and everything but may i just say... stephen sondheim and andrew lloyd webber playing a piano together!!! omg! i would give my two front teeth to be in that room for a sing round the piano!
love the shot of the two pairs of hands on the paino! please say im not the only person who geeked out slightly...
@Stilicho0874 : I always though Sondheim was rather touchy about the criticism of his music as being so clever it only appeals to a cult. But he still ripped into that line about "the over-written music of tonight" with commendable gusto. I think 1) they're both past caring, and 2) have enormous respect for Cameron. (I think 'Side By Side By Sondheim' was one of C.M.'s first hits.)
Why is everyone calling them by their surnames? To me they're just Andrew and Stephen - both legends. Up until now I've loathed Stephen, I always thought Andrew was supreme ruler of all, but I think I quite like Send in The Clowns. This video makes me smile every time I see it.
What that was all about was the Americans getting pissed off that the Euros were invading Broadway and making more money than the Americans were at their own game. When Evita, Les Mis, Cats, Phantom, Miss Saigon, and all the rest of them came over from across the pond with their multi-million dollar production values, grammy winning platinum selling soundtrack albums, and mainstream appeal that turned Broadway into just a tourist attraction alot of the hardcore NY Broadway set got pissed off.
i love the fact that all broadway nerds always talk about webber vs. sondheim (i'm guilty of this myself) but they don't take themselves that seriously lol
To me they're so incredibly different that the entire debate is a waste of breath. I think Sondheim is great at what he does, Webber is great at what he does...it's like trying to say a Rugby player is a better athlete than a Football player...they essentially do the same thing, but at the same time it's really really different to the point where you can't really compare them.
Though "He's richer than me!" takes the cake. No longer true, which makes it even funnier.
I was halfway caught between laughing and facepalm-ing. This may very well be one of the most "something-you-thought-you'd-never-see" videos on YouTube.
i didnt get that part.... what ever it was he's doing why couldnt he just spend 3 mins playing it? if he had the time to come on stage, just never understood that :) ?
I think they purposely taped it so it wouldn't show from the beginning who the other person was until they showed him (or the real geeks when they heard the few notes from MOTN).
And also, who knows how many times they laughed and had to retape it! Plus, the camera work with the picture and all.
True, I would have loved to have seen it live but still equally as funny.
Actually, it was because he was doing something else.
Hey Mr. Producer had at least two performances - if you listen to the CD recording, you can hear differences from the video. In Sondheim's speech on the CD, he says "I finally found somebody, but he has another gig tonight."
I'm not sure what exactly the gig was - maybe the theater realtiy show that Lloyd Weber was a part of - but there was a direct conflict for one of the performances, hence the reason it was taped.
I realized there was editing done in regards to the audio and video recordings... especially in "Gotta get a gimmick"... but here, ALW comes out afterwards so I thought it was all a big gag and they purposely recorded it to show the picture of Sir C.
I have an MP3 of this and thought it was a skit from Forbidden Broadway - I didn't realize it was actually performed by both the Lord and God. Fun to see them sharing something other than a birthday!
According to the rich list..it's no longer true that Cameron is richer than ALW...his fortune stands at c£750m as opposed to Cameron's £450m... still neither are quite in the gutter are they. They wont be claiming social security anytime soon. More likely to be bailing out a bank or two!
This is so great! Hilarious! And it's wonderful and refreshing to see two of the many geniuses in the music / broadway industry show their funny side.
This has always been one of my very favorite scenes from this show. I LOVE how Andrew leans over to say "Richer than me!" and his expression before "You're out of your mind!"
Some years ago I HAD this videotape, but watched it so many times that's already broken. Is Mr. Producer on DVD? I'd love to have "my arms complete again". Thanks.
You gotta love Andrew Lloyd Webber!
