@OtterpopSlaughterMop Gotch describes him in the video as merely being someone who came to him to learn hooks, but Gotch decided he had to get his conditioning up to snuff. Sadly, Gotch's wife died and he apparently lost all interest. No names were given sadly enough.
Furey also stole from Gene LeBell. I trained in Gene & Gokor's dojo and met Furey when he showed up ONCE for a Monday night group class. He promptly stole the moves Gene showed us that night and published them in a magazine as his own.
LeBell was pissed.
LeBell speaks very highly of Karl Gotch - says he was one of the best in the world.
Yes, the majority of the exercises that conman passes on are effect. But aside from using Gotch's name, Furey also markets a bunch of woo-woo. Backward walking qigong to make you young. Magnetic energy balls to make you feel amazing. Amongst other bullshit.
And on top of that, he takes advantage of 9/11 to sell you things. He has won a couple of tournaments, in non-submissions styles, the latest being now over 10 years ago. I don't know why everyone bows down to him.
I agree with that. on every fitness site I now I get a fair amount of publicity for some products, but also I get a shitload of good info (see clarence bass site). on MF's website on the other side, I get almost nothing useful but lots and lots of aggresive publicity. It makes me just puke
That's because weapons can let you down; jam, run out of ammo or the enemy is simply too close to use a weaponry effectively. Combat training encompasses all ranges for this reasoning. Bullet will extend your reach and power, like having a very long telescopic spear, but it can let you down!
Often I hear idiots talk disparagingly about Martial Arts training, taking the piss; saying nowadays people can get guns and mace sprays if they wanted to defend themselves. This is valid to a certain extent, but weapons are not always available or easily deployable in every situation. The hand gun backs up the assault rifle, the knife backs up the hand gun and empty hand techniques back up the knife.
In the UK, it is illegal to carry hand guns or knives for self defence, this places the victim in a position of disdvantage since criminals will have no hestitation in usingly knives and in some cases, guns themselves. So martial arts and incidental weapons are all we got.
yeah- brass knuckles (or tough-padded gloves), hairpins, umbrellas, city sticks, mace (perfume), taser (is there a permit for that in uk? IMO taser/mace is the best combo); be creative! :)
Incidental weapons allowed only in UK law; no authorisation to use taser or mace for the general public, for any reason and no brass knuckles allowed, which is shit.
yeah, i agree. laws are intended to compromise and end up providing convenience/safety to more people than they don't. current weapons laws only inconvenience the people who want -all- the laws to help them; you break one and lose the law's protection. criminals don't care about the law's protection, so it only makes it tough on many levels for real citizens.
Athough this not the main subject of the thread, I think it bares mentioning since wrestling or other forms of unarmed combat is the only thing law abiding UK citizens can count as the primary tool for self-defence.
I practice Krav Maga as it is all about self-defence from a position of disadvantage; armed assaults with blunt or edged weapons and close range threat or attack with firearms (Where the aggressor draws a gun at conversation distance with the intention of shooting and killing)
If I lived in a country where carrying and using hand guns or blades for self-defence is allowed, I would certainly carry a gun and a knife, but I would still learn unarmed combat, because as mention before, weapons can let you down, become lost or worse be used against you. Sometimes deploying a weapon when the situation is uncalled for can land people it deeper shit, but it can make a group of attackers think twice.
definitely! part of the most universally respected martial arts styles is to emphasize training the body as a weapon -first-, and then you understand more fully how an implement/weapon works.
and the worst thing you can do to a group of people is brandish a weapon; most smart groups will just swarm you before you have a chance to use it or one can break away and sneak behind you. and if people are resisting authority, you don't want to look like an authority--that's just ASKING for them to freak
these idea's are really Karl Gotch's either he took them from wrestlers in the subcontinent whom he wrestled with and knew and of course Gotch was a great student of wrestling so he learned a lot from his study
That's what Furey would have you believe. Research it yourself,Gotch himself has stated his opinion on Furey. Called him a "fat slob with no honor" and "disgrace to wrestling".
He also asked Furey to stop using his name in his products, and said that Furey only knew him for a few months, not years like he claims.
Furey is a quack, a scammer and a thief. I know i've bought his videos before.
Has anyone ever figured out who that guy was Gotch was teaching in vol. #1?

Karl Gotch actually executed a german suplex on Andre the Giant. Unbelievable! Wish there was footage of that.

Karl Gotch said something like, even in the army where they fight with guns and grenades, the 1st thing they make you do is conditioning.
