What is gobsmacking about this game is its stratospheric concept. Bearing in mind these are the same dudes that made Monkey Island and Day of the Tentacle, this is a game about three people thrown against their will into an old, abandoned world populated by a race of beings who severed their corporeal connection with reality in a misguided attempt to achieve godhood. Beautiful, desolate, immortal. I am privileged to have been alive at the point in history when Cocytus was given to us to explore.
This game, is so underrated it's almost painful. I've only recently just discovered it, and I really have no idea how I missed it years ago. I would also like to note that it has one of the most engrossing and simply breathtaking soundtracks I've heard in any video game.
I seriously can't believe I somehow missed this amazing game back when I was younger, graphics be damned, expectations of hilarious game play be damned-
This an amazing adventure game worth a place in any PC gamers collection.
@AnubusStar Maybe this is because Michael Land (composer) used Richard Wagner music samples to make this soundtrack. You can find some answers here: dig.mixnmojo.com/museum/interview_land.html
It took me a while, but I finished this game when I only eight years old or so.
If I had but one wish to make while on this planet, it would be to have The Dig turned into a film in which the actors, writing, and the director would do the game justice.
Excellent soundtrack, thought provoking, and overall a great game. :)
Just to let people know, George Lucas and Steven S. wrote the plot the make The Dig a movie, but because of high costs, it was not possible, so to do not lost all the plot, the game born.
I got this game for xmax from "santa" hehehe and it was for my first 100 mhz pc with soundblaster 16 and 32 mb ram or less..i cant remember..but i loved this game..stayed up all night in the weekend just to solve it :D
Recently i installed it again because i dident knew there was a second ending :)
Yeah, I agree! The first time I played this game, I thought, "Why is this not a movie?" Having said that, I think Hollywood would fuck up this great idea and it would not meet our expectations. All we can do is appreciate the original for what it was. What it is. So immersive, so original, so deep.
I'm chilling, got my incense burning as I'm listening to this beautiful music and drawing a portrait for a very special person. Zoning the world out. peace.
They should make a movie out of this game. It'd probably end up sucking, but if that was the case, I would just not buy it. Done right, it could be epic.
Best game ever, I played it when I was like 7 years old, and I play it to this day. I have completely lost the count on how many times I have played it, probably hundreds. The story is so good... and the music... oh my god, Land (and Wagner), they are so good, I'm about to cry right now.
@RemusN7 Me too I recently found the game on Steam. I lived in a different country when I played this (also 6 - 7 years old) with my dad, it brings back so many great memories. This is on of the few games ever made that you can get lost in a fantastc adventure. I remember how frustratingly difficult it was the first time I played it through, but it only made the game that much better!
Starting at about 4:45 there's a slow tension build that I can't get out of my head. Also, the melodic phrases bursting forth at about 8:30 are just beautiful... wish they lasted longer, but that's hardly a criticism.
Just the best music I've heard in any computer or video game.
So haunting and beautiful! Absolute masterpiece! I loved this as a kid. For some reason it reminds me in parts of the Total Recall score which Jerry Goldsmith did. Another great soundtrack.
best soundtrack period. speilburgh should pick this up again and make the movie already to celebrate some sort of anniversary i think it well deserves it. who's with me?
@RisingStarOfLight absolutely, if he will take back the story of The Dig for a movie it will return to be a great director. And therefore people will see again a great movie like once!
I loved this game! Been looking for something like it for ages now, exploring ancient alien civilizations, walking around in a mysterious new universe. I <3 sci-fi adventure! They don't make them like they used to. Sigh. Think I might replay it soon...
Just beat this game today! I didn't enjoy how difficult it was, the game frustrated me or left me lost far too often, but I will absolutely never forget the soundtrack.

If I had three wishes, one of them would be that The Dig be made into a feature film, and that Michael Bay stay far far away from it.

Why do I get the feeling I've heard this music before? I never played The Dig, so it obviously wasn't from there.

@AnubusStar Futurama used this music, or at least one of the tracks, in their (recent) 8-bit style episode.

Why should someone make a movie out of this, when the game was a flop back then?
I don't think the movie industry wants to pour money down a rat hole. So people, wake up, don't be naive!!!

If Hollywood has run out of ideas, why don't they take a look at 90's LucasArts masterpieces for a change?

The most inspiring soundtrack, to the best adventure game ever seen. I encourage everyone to read the novel.
A shame the movie never left the idea-room... it was planned though.
