  • Is there any advantage in "hollow-grinding" a blade?

  • @Squarerig I make razors, a hollow grind works well for razors. The hollow allows the metal behind the bevel to be very thin, this works out well for razors.

The hollow also makes honing razors easier, when you lay a razor on a stone only the spine and the bevel touch the stone it is like having a built in honing guide.

  • Can this cut the monsters out of my haunted head?

  • @venturadave Only if they are small monsters

  • You cant tell, but theres a hamster on either side powering this machine.

  • @AndrewKH85 The best part is, the hamsters wil work for peanuts. :)

  • Does it matter how wide the blade is, like that looks like a inch and a half or so. If the blade was wider do you have to adjust the wheels?

  • @billy2sweets It is more the thickness of the blade, and what diameter wheels I am using that make me adjust the distance between the wheels.

Razors are the only blades that I make so I do not have a lot of experience with blades much over one inch wide.

  • brilliant

  • hi! I don't know a lot about grinding but can you make the wheels spin the other way so you can push what you have to grind from the top, being helped by newton??

  • @alby94444 Yes, the motors are wired to be able to change directions.

It is harder to see what I am grinding when the spine of the blade is facing up. All of the sparks and dust also fly up in the air toward my face when the motors are spinning in reverse.

I tried having the wheels go in both directions but found I did better job when they are spinning downward in middle.

  • @lewisrazors yep that's true...excellent idea anyway

  • excellent idea.

  • @looseyfur74 Thank you

  • that is awesome! great idea!

  • Hello Sir:

Have you considered building these dual wheel grinders to sale? or at least sale the plans to make them?

    Thanks

    James

  • @wvblade I have another video chowing how the grinder is put together on my channel.

  • @lewisrazors:

I watched that and I wanted to express how much that impressed me... If you ever want to sell it or make them to sell... Please let me know as I am very interested.

    Thanks

    James

  • @wvblade Thanks, I do not have plans to make or sell this grinder, but I made another video that shows how it is put together

  • @lewisrazors

I saw that... I am sure it took you a while to come up with a viable setup that works for your applications... Very ingenious Sir... Well if you ever change your mind about the grinder please let me know I will be interested it for sometime to come I am sure...

    Thanks

    James

  • @lewisrazors @lewisrazors

It's amazing Sir... Would you care to provide me with a parts list and where to purchase so I can build my own setup? you have inspired me to get back out into my shop after a few years of depression and lack of will to do just about anything... I appreciate that too...

    Thanks

    James

  • can you put your finger in it?

  • @Aizura77 Yes, I could stick my finger in it, there is no guard, but I do not think that I will. If I were building the grinder for other people to use it would have proper safe guards.

  • How much did it cost to build this machine of win?

  • @tommie314101 I am not really sure how much I spent. It was a long process coming to this design, I tried lots of designs out before I came to this design. Idid not keep track of the money spent.

  • what did you use to make the wheels on that grinder?

  • @Duckyistrippin The wheels are cast steel caster wheels. They were trued, cut to width, and had bearings put in them at a machine shop.

  • Why is a razor hollow ground?

  • @TheMuslimKiller Straight razors are honed by laying them flat on the hone. The hollow in a razor allows the edge and the spine to touch the hone. That way you do not have to hone the whole side of the of the blade. The hollow makes it a lot easier polish the edge to a razor sharp edge.

  • @TheMuslimKiller dude you are a huge toolbag

fantastic coolest thing i have seen in a long time ;0)

  • its super idea but working capacity of belt grinder may be 20 blade ...if you use stone grinder and use in center vice for twice angle ..it would be great.. :-}

  • @mmlhandicrafts That is an interesting idea

  • This is just genius!

  • @shellacscales thanks

  • Better than doing it on a bench grinder like I do, that's for sure...

  • @CrowPollock I did my first few on a bench grinder, that is slow going

  • I'm impressed how cool it seems to do the work. Not much scorching on the blade and it appears hand held with nothing to protect from heat. Nice setup.

  • @flyingscrapyard I have a coolant set, but did not use it in the video,

  • love your machine and the use of the sliding vices to adjust the belts... genuis!!!

  • @hdrjunkie Thanks

  • if i wanted to be a machinist, and do not know anything about machinig, where would i start

  • @ismokewead420 I went to a trade school/community college to learn the basics of machining

  • Comment removed

  • now this is the smartest thing i have seen done

  • @nanashi1o3 Thanks

  • love this

  • @shermnduke Thanks

  • What brand of abrasive belts are using...?? I do a lot of welding and metal working, and interested in making some knives and similar home type cutting tools as a hobby.

  • @dougspair The belts are 1X42 belts, the are generic ceramic belts I buy them from various sources, I shop around and try to get my belts when there is a sell going on.

  • @lewisrazors OK, I have a vertical sander, and a bunch of 1X42's...I like Klingspor, a German made belt...middle of the range on price, not too agressive on the material removal, but very long life. I've used a lot of their abrasives in my jobs as welder and machinist/mechanic on a variety of industrial stuff, so I needed the good quality. Klingspor sells retail, but has $50 minimum. If you can get any, I think you'll like them. They make belts, disc's, hard wheels, cur-off's.

  • @dougspair Klingspor 1x42 are around $2 each, but last as long as about 8-10 of the Harbor Fright stuff.

  • @dougspair Thank you for the information

  • kids don't watch this video it is so very naughty

  • thanks for posting this

question, how long is the actual cutting part of a typical straight razor? about 2 inches?

    thank you for your time

  • @evcrawfish The blade part on that razor was about 1" X 3"

  • Good skills!

  • @maZZiveAttack Thanks

  • That's a great machine.I would like to see the rest of it.

  • @ALLISON423 I will make a more detailed video in the future.

  • AGRADEÇO A ATENÇÃO ESTAREI FAZENDO UMA LINDA FACA BOWIE OK

    ABRAÇOS DO BRASIL

  • gostei da maquina sua;;

se possivel me mande qual é o motor que voce esta usando quantos cavalos de potencia?

e a velocidade do motor ok? rpm

  • @zedafaca123 They are 1725 rpm, ½ horsepower motors. The drive pulleys are 3” inch in diameter.

  • Poster child for the hollow grind. Wow man, that really cool. Thanks for sharing.

  • Great setup and usefull idea, TY

  • I have got to make one of those! I've been doing it the hard way all these years. Nice setup.

  • did you make that or buy it somewhere?????? in other, words where can i get one

  • @that0neguyxx It is a homemade grinder

  • @that0neguyxx that's funny of you to ask that!!! you don't know charlie very well.

    cool stuff as usual!!

  • Man that is super cool.
