  • fucking depressing.

  • my fav year by far was this past one, becuz i got 2 see these guys live.........HAPPY NEW YEAR every1!!

  • i love the decemberists. their lyrics are always to beautiful

  • Im reading a book by colin meloy

  • @MrDonking101 DITTO! It's really really good.

  • The fact that a really badly written progressive commercial has to play before this really ruins it for me.

  • This video was just added to a music playlist at JustPlay.fm

  • The Decemberists are the only band I've heard of that chose to release their best song, not as a single, not even on a studio album, but on a compilation for charity.

Is Dark Was the Night really the only CD this song appears on? Am I missing an EP or something?

  • Their 'Stairway to Heaven'.

  • the cold clasp of Illinois....

  • @ricochet188 gave you a thumbs down. THE PRICE YOU PAY FOR LYING!

  • @YesYouAreIgnorant Plz thumbs up for all my struggles

  • @ricochet188 IF this was really emotional relief for you, you wouldnt be on youtube videos of it begging for thumbs up. Why would you post such a grave lie like that? For a short lived, unnoticed internet fame? For what?

  • @CommanderSwedePlays Plz thumbs up would make my life so much better. Plz thumbs up to give me the strength to carry on

  • @ricochet188 Sir, you absolutely discuss me. A channel full of trying to mollest video game characters and you come here to say such a terrible, terrible lie?

  • @CommanderSwedePlays Plz give me ur support. It is all I have left

  • @ricochet188 You disgust* me. If you respond to this again asking for support without even taking the time to spell out words, i swear i'll find a way to report you to youtube. Humanity is falling...

  • @CommanderSwedePlays YOU DISCUSS ME

  • @ricochet188 No

  • Glad you like the album.

full album can be purchased at our website or on itunes

All proceeds are donated to help fight against AIDs/HIV related health and social issues

  • I don't see how anybody could NOT like this?!

  • Masterpiece.

  • the best song of the decemberists

  • This song leaves me wanting more, even after 7 minutes

  • this is soo beautiful but has a way of making me so sad

  • Beautiful! if you love Colin Meloy you should also check out Luke Southgate; truly exceptional song writer.

  • i love every album The Decemberist did and im learning a lot on the guitar. Collin Meloy is amazing!!!!

  • Do you know more Decemberists songs like this? I gave a chance to the Crane Wife album and it annoyed me a lot... but this one is up there with some of my favorite songs.

  • @kodochakhfan

Record year, raincoat song, Here I dreamt I was an architect, grace cathedral hill, california one youth and beauty brigade

  • @kodochakhfan the hazards of love is my favorite album of all time, try that one out.

  • @doobieman69 Dark Was the Night is the twentieth compilation release benefiting the Red Hot Organization, an international charity dedicated to raising funds and awareness for HIV and AIDS. Don't know if this song is on any decemberists albums exactly.

  • only just discovered this band. My god - what i have been missing. which album is this from?

  • only just discovered this band. My god - what i have been missing.

  • @sera97

    How'd I miss this? :)

Thank you, so much. Hugs are always appreciated.

  • Agree with InTheHaunted. But I dont mind because there are enough people who greatly appreciated what he and his band do. Favorite band...great song writing ability... cant ask for much more out of them. Tour starts in January!

  • I could hear this song EveryDay :)

  • as long as t have hope i do not despair

the weary path that we travel is the path that leads to dreams

    sleepless

    but not without hope!

Thank you Decemberists for this song

    This song is all -

  • beautiful song.......

  • I like this song so much more than the Hazards of Love. It was kind of mediocre album.

  • @jasezer mediocre? hmm must have listened to different albums

  • I really do love the clever metaphors intertwined in each song, and yes it's about understanding each song, but more about interpreting them in your own way. I love how music can help so much with a situation... I relate this to someone that made a mistake, in my eyes because of "sleeplessness", but this could also be used as a metaphor (weird as it sounds) for confusion... "field of tears that will never yield a single penny" - it's no use crying, it's not going to change what's happened...

  • the decemberists. wow. well what can i say. such beautifully tempoed tunes. im glad their not over recognised like the shins have become.

  • Okay, who dares click the "not like" button on this song? This is without a doubt one of the most powerful songs I've ever heard, and just from reading the other responses, I can feel that I'm not alone! Peace everyone.

  • this is such a beautiful and chilling songs, i listen to them very day and i get inspiration from them and i thank you for puttin this on youtube

  • Definitely one of their greatest songs

  • I get chills every time I listen to this song. When Meloy hits that high note at "I don't know" I just get chills. This is one of the best off of this album. One of the best Decemberists songs, also.

  • Oh so pretty....;)

  • i want to thank you

  • One of the most beautiful songs.

Just proves, once again, that Colin Meloy is one of our generations greatest songwriters. He deserves so much more recognition than he get's. And that goes for the whole band as well.

  • Amen to that

  • couldnt agree more thank you for saying it so well

  • @InTheHaunted AGREED. Colin Meloy and Conner Oberst = best songwriters of here and now

  • This song is absolutely gorgeous. I find myself repeating it over and over again. I saw them live recently, and was a tad bit disappointed they didn't play this one. I can't really complain though, I saw them live! That's been a dream for years! Also, I bought tickets to go see t hem again, so perhaps "Sleepless" in Chicago? I can only hope! ^_^

  • beautiful song. then again all Decemberists songs are ;) it's a masterpiece.

  • This song is really good, they played it live when i saw them in Columbus. Maybe my favorite of the entire night.

  • É LINDA esta musica, LINDA LINDA LINDA

    ***

  • I LOOOOVE THIS SOOOOOONG

  • Just brilliant.

  • Brilliant

  • they played this in st louis 4 days ago. it was entrancing.

  • they played this monday night in columbus.

    it ROCKED!!!!

    :D

  • This is my favorite song on Dark Was the Night easy.

  • I agree.. this is so, so beautiful.

  • Heard this on the radio today. Probably my favorite Decemberists song.

  • seriously?!?!

    where?

  • to już jest mój utwór roku

naprawdę nie chcę już nic innego usłyszeć

  • The part of the song that shifts gears makes me cry, everytime. Although it's obviously something very different, I apply it to the final months of my Mom's excruciating battle with brain cancer. A beautiful song that, for me, has become a painfully powerful release.

  • @frustratednoname Requiescat im pace.
