The Decemberists are the only band I've heard of that chose to release their best song, not as a single, not even on a studio album, but on a compilation for charity.
Is Dark Was the Night really the only CD this song appears on? Am I missing an EP or something?

My entire family died in a fire years and years ago After they died I heard this song now whenever I hear this song I get mega emotional Give me thumbs up.
@ricochet188 IF this was really emotional relief for you, you wouldnt be on youtube videos of it begging for thumbs up. Why would you post such a grave lie like that? For a short lived, unnoticed internet fame? For what?
@ricochet188 Sir, you absolutely discuss me. A channel full of trying to mollest video game characters and you come here to say such a terrible, terrible lie?
@ricochet188 You disgust* me. If you respond to this again asking for support without even taking the time to spell out words, i swear i'll find a way to report you to youtube. Humanity is falling...
Do you know more Decemberists songs like this? I gave a chance to the Crane Wife album and it annoyed me a lot... but this one is up there with some of my favorite songs.
@doobieman69 Dark Was the Night is the twentieth compilation release benefiting the Red Hot Organization, an international charity dedicated to raising funds and awareness for HIV and AIDS. Don't know if this song is on any decemberists albums exactly.
Agree with InTheHaunted. But I dont mind because there are enough people who greatly appreciated what he and his band do. Favorite band...great song writing ability... cant ask for much more out of them. Tour starts in January!
I really do love the clever metaphors intertwined in each song, and yes it's about understanding each song, but more about interpreting them in your own way. I love how music can help so much with a situation... I relate this to someone that made a mistake, in my eyes because of "sleeplessness", but this could also be used as a metaphor (weird as it sounds) for confusion... "field of tears that will never yield a single penny" - it's no use crying, it's not going to change what's happened...
Okay, who dares click the "not like" button on this song? This is without a doubt one of the most powerful songs I've ever heard, and just from reading the other responses, I can feel that I'm not alone! Peace everyone.
I get chills every time I listen to this song. When Meloy hits that high note at "I don't know" I just get chills. This is one of the best off of this album. One of the best Decemberists songs, also.
Just proves, once again, that Colin Meloy is one of our generations greatest songwriters. He deserves so much more recognition than he get's. And that goes for the whole band as well.
This song is absolutely gorgeous. I find myself repeating it over and over again. I saw them live recently, and was a tad bit disappointed they didn't play this one. I can't really complain though, I saw them live! That's been a dream for years! Also, I bought tickets to go see t hem again, so perhaps "Sleepless" in Chicago? I can only hope! ^_^
The part of the song that shifts gears makes me cry, everytime. Although it's obviously something very different, I apply it to the final months of my Mom's excruciating battle with brain cancer. A beautiful song that, for me, has become a painfully powerful release.
fucking depressing.

The fact that a really badly written progressive commercial has to play before this really ruins it for me.
