  • He sounds like Ashens lol

  • linux is not boring and not all of them are for geeks

  • you cant use microsoft word on a linux?

  • yes you can actually (: however they have opeoffice

  • with wine u can

  • Im thinking of leaving microsoft, when windows 7 comes out xp will be outdated and I dont want to buy a new machine to go microsoft, and im tired of microsoft actually, so im going to lear about how to use this OS as it seems faster, lighter more good looking and from what many people tell me, it is much safer. Still I need to know more details about linux, im not ready yet....Can any one give me a web site that can send me to the right direction? I would apretiate that.

  • Vista = XP+Aero. Nothing more, just more $ for Bill Gates.

  • plus annoying UAC Control

  • Quite boring relly... lol :) Linux rocks

  • Good video, no jargon, no unnecessary geek speak. Keep up the good working and make more of the video to even more what Linux distribution can do. Maybe introduce people to Wubi.

  • nice video. very informative. great doctor who ep :p

  • no linux flash drivers for x86 64bit, shame on you adobe :(

  • You can install Gnash to play flash in 64bit :)

  • Cool video, great work.

  • I can't get videos to function in my Ubuntu OS. I have to boot into Mac OS X to watch them =/

  • There's a guide to installing "Restricted Formats" for video and audio here: help dot ubuntu dot com slash community slash RestrictedFormats

  • Actually, I had all the gstreamer codecs and crap installed. I fixed it when I saw a forum post with my same problem. Apparently Totems native video format doesn't comply with my video card, so I had to change it via the terminal to X11. Works perfect now :-D

  • Download linux mint! Ubuntu with restricted codec installed!

  • ... I had all the restricted codecs installed, that wasn't my problem.

  • you need all the codecs

  • that background music is really distracting.

  • Ubuntu has a live CD you can run (doesnt install) on your system to see what you think. I personally love Ubuntu and am working on using it as a base for my customn systems I build. Email,Music, videos, chat can all be done using Ubuntu. And the free software available out there for Linux is astronomical and I bet you can find anything you need for it. Give it a look. tell you what, I am currently working on a Vista system and not really enjoying it lol. Doesnt look pretty but nothing like Beryl

  • Were you being sarcastic all throughout the video, or just the last part? Either way, for using sarcasm, you rule! =D

Well... I wouldn't get Linux. Basically because I've used Windows all my life and can screw up its system and back with no worries, whereas if I try this on another system I'll probably get sued by my parents. XD

Brittishhh. Acceeentt. Was nice to listen too. Found it soothing.

  • Linux gives better performance on older hardware. If you don't have confidence (or permission!) to install it on your main PC, get a second-hand PC. 800Mhz with 512MB RAM & 20GB HDD will run most Linux versions ("distros"), and there are special ones such as Xubuntu designed for older/slower hardware. That way, you can build up your confidence and experience without worry. Paying the Windows licence fee (and Microsoft Word, anti-virus) is OK when Daddy is paying- but when you move out..?

  • Linux pwns windows. This guy is using a basic linux build. Ubuntu is the best for Linux newbies. /w crossover, windows office and adobe apps work just fine. Linux uses 1/4 the memory of windows and doesn't require much from a cpu, and 512 ram will let it run without hickups.

  • ArchTymeWizard is right about it being a basic build. I specifically wanted to avoid "bloat"; avoid installing stuff I'd never use. What I did was install the bare minimum Ubuntu Server package, then gradually installed the desktop components I wanted. You can read more about this entire process here: aoakley dot com/articles/2007-03-01.php

  • wow, linux looks really cool. Is there a way i can have both windows (for pc games) and linux, without slowing down my pc?

  • Yes you can have multiboot instalation of different OS's, or even to have different versions of the same OS.

  • Cooool video. The guy sounds like every british guy that has appeared on Family Guy :D hehe.

  • pepe6666: "The guy sounds like every british guy that has appeared on Family Guy"

Although, annoyingly, I *look* like Family Guy. Not the Brits who appear on Family Guy, just Family Guy. PheAr my triple-chin and dehli-belly. Mmm, curry.

  • :D

Interesting perspective in your video though. Focusing on 'that Linux thing' and what it does. Because the other OSes all look like something. But Linux looks like lots of things.

  • Good one Keytoothed!

  • Lol im running PClinuxOS with Berly 3D lol

    Very good.

  • Vista = trans-Vista-ite.

  • Nice.

*think about what this could look like on a Vista-built machine* ^^

  • Nice intro. It's nice to see someone TALK about ubuntu and beryl with out just posting a video with rotating cubes and blaring techno.

  • Excellent work, my friend! I have been an Ubuntu user for well over a year, and I have been 100% Microsoft free since last March. Due to the silly 500 character limit, I am going to post multiple times :S

  • i am looking to install linex on my laptop, it looks very good, was n't sure what version to go for. Where can I download it from, would you be able to point me in the right direction?

Also is it easy to install?

    Thanks Wayne

  • Ubuntu + Beryl with all the stuff is hard to install. You should try sabayon: everything is pre-installed for you.

  • apt-get install beryl was enough for me.

  • It easy to install codec with the Automatix software. It only hard if you do not use Automatix

  • Google use Ubuntu in there Head Office in the states. It reported that Google are a little anti windows :)

  • Well Google is part of Apple's board of Directors and is helping Apple with their new version of Spotlight in Leopard and with the iPhone.

  • Google do use Ubuntu - it was on TV

  • Actualy like Boeing(Seattle), Google uses their own internal OS, which is based upon the opensource OS, Ubuntu. Sidenote - Boeing's is based off of UNIX.

  • That was a myth, everybody outside of Google thought that but In Linux Format Magazine it said Google do not have an internal OS. It would be interesting how this myth got out and lead people believing it to be true. I think Ubuntu have sent an e-mail or they did something to put people right

  • Actually google said they have their own internal OS, it's called Goobuntu. It's pretty much a modified version of Ubuntu. Google also has modified versions of Red Hat, SUSE, and Debian.

  • We have to agree to disagree mate. I am going by what i been reading from publications

  • Youbuntu!

  • I was just relaying what a google spokesperson said in an article.

  • Windows Vista can suck my ballz, Linux is the way to go!

  • I'm going to move to Ubuntu & this video, was very very comforting.Showing open office took away any latent fear, nice human voice;-)

  • Well presented. Try out for BBC radio! I agree, very good voice. Be conscience of your breathing - (constructive criticism). Again, well done. Oh and, ubuntu all the way! :)

  • Cheers - I did used to do (pirate) radio, but computing paid better. Thanks for the breathing tip - I'll try moving the microphone out of direct breathing line next time.

  • very good video. Nice work. Nice voice to listen too. Thank you for this good contribution!

  • Very well done video. Having a human talking over it, putting it in everyday language - makes all the difference. I'm an XP user, but already made the switch to FOSS applications, and I'm working on switching over to Linux for my OS. (So your video is quite encouraging too!). Expect your view count to go up, I shall be passing this one around quite a bit!

  • The machine spec is an AMD Athlon XP 1700 running at 1500MHz with an NVidia GeForce2 MX 420 graphics card, plus 786MB of PC133 RAM and a VIA KT-133 motherboard, plus bog standard IDE hard drives. Operating system is Ubuntu 6.06 running Beryl desktop. Recorded using RecordMyDesktop.

  • I kind of gave up trying to install this stuff I computer is only a year old state of the art at the time. I just going to wait until the April Ubuntu upgrade. That the other great thing every 6 months free up grade plus in 06 Linux had 40 reported virus world wide, Windows had millions

  • The thing that turned me to Ubuntu was the 5-year server support and 3-year desktop support. I don't want to be reinstalling my machine every 6 months, which is why I switched from Fedora to Ubuntu.

Don't get me wrong - a six month release cycle is great for those who want the whizziest stuff. But I've got a family and a job that (happily) occupies much more of my time. Nicely, Ubuntu provides for both the "long term stability" and the "short term whiz-bangs".

  • But you do not need to re-install every six months at the top of the tool bar every now and then you get an orange icon that you should click on to install fixes and new or up graded software - every 6 months this icon will appear with the latest Ubuntu release click on it and it will upgrade without effecting your settings - wow

  • I believe 46 viruses ever reported, 42 are lab viruses and only 4 actually real ones. Those 4 did not spread much...(This is what I heard from a friend, so I'm not 100% sure...)
