Civilians have been in Iraq serving honorably as truckers, security and in many other positions for a long time.  Bringing civilians experts in is a good idea -- our military needs to be fighting the enemy, not setting up social programs.

I think religion doesn't help a person gain knowledge about the universe.  Religious people think that something as complex as the universe must have been designed, and that designer is God. But that argument leads one to say that something as complex as God must have been designed, and that designer is a prior God. So the universe is not any clearer by supposing a God created it.
