Although Aoki IS a black belt in both judo and jiu-jitsu, what most people dont know is that he is a Class-A shoot fighter, which is his base, and is the reason he likes to wear shoot fighting pants in his fights. That being said, i wouldnt call Aoki a mix of Judo and Jiu-Jitsu, but a mix of Catch-Wrestling and Jiu-Jitsu since Catch Wrestling was the base grappling style for shootfighting back in the day.

In a ring theres no way you can just press against a cage without being reset in the middle of the ring. Aoki couldn't establish his rubber guard because he was being stalled against a cage. If this fight happens in the ring Aoki wins by submission. The cage favors wrestlers to lay and pray and press opponents like Couture
He did damage. It was just a testament to Aoki's toughness. He'll adapt like he always seems to after losses but Gil's five round clinic deserves respect. Aoki's jiu-jitsu is elite for mma. What he needs is a better shot and some hands to compete with the big boys, nuff said.

Aoki is a complete innovator. The man has taken Jujitsu and Judo to a higher level than anyone in MMA. People criticize him for his flipping of the bird after break hirota's arm. first off, Hirota didn't tap, so he had to break it, and second Hirota kept talking shit about Aoki before that fight so aoki had the right to flip him off, he is one of the most respectful and humble people there is. Shit talking is not acceptable in Japan seeming how they are so humble and respectful.
@guyverrob I'd say he would easily be top 5 anywhere he fights. Dream is a very strong promotion, so the level really isn't any higher in the UFC or Strikeforce. The likes of Penn, Edgar, and Melendez are up there as well, but Aoki's grappling is 2nd to no one. He has alot of pride in being a Japanese MMA fighter, so he wouldn't switch for the world.
Shinya Aoki is a fucking bad ass. He is probably the best submission expert in the game today. He is ruthless and inventive in his fighting. He is definitely one of the most entertaining fighters in MMA, and this is coming from someone who is mainly a fan of striking.

I think Aoki's problem was just the fact that it's a lot different in a ring than in a cage, he has never been in a cage until he was warming up for that fight. But yeah his stand up is improving. He was throwing a lot of head kicks in his last fight and he did really well. Aurelio didn't have a chance.

@808Productionsz Being good at Jiu-Jitsu is one thing but applying it to MMA like Aoki has is another. For Aoki to be so accomplished and one dimensional is mind boggling. His Jiu-Jitsu might not be the best but its the best in MMA. MG 0-1, Aoki 26-5. If he took wrestling and striking seriously I think he could be p4p the best fighter in the world.

@xXSatansSnipa I think he is talking about Marcelo Garcia, the grappler who has submitted the likes of jake shields, kron gracie, aoki and g-sot in grappling competitions. He has also pointed demian maia, babalu and vitor ribiero in grappling competitions as well.
I am the BIGGEST Aoki fan in the world, but even I have to give credit where it is due, and Marcello Garcia is a better pure grappler than Aoki. However, in MMA competition Aoki takes the cake easy.

Cant believe only one person in UFC can change all of MMA,
he is a dick and thinks that all the other organizations are a piece of shit, he has no respect for those other fighters.
The only original fighters that I know of that are from UFC are Randy Couture, Royce Gracie, Ken Shamrock, and Mark Coleman. And I'm talking legendary.
But honestly i think UFC is one of the higher and im not saying highest but higher organizations.

Aoki would beat Melendez in a ring.... for the simple fact that american rules favor wrestlers. Melendez did no damage and just pressed aoki against a cage to nullify his BJJ. In a ring theres no way you can just press against a cage without being reset in the middle of the ring. Aoki couldn't establish his rubber guard because he was being stalled against a cage. If this fight happens in the ring Aoki wins by submission. The cage favors wrestlers to lay and pray and press opponents like Couture

He did damage. It was just a testament to Aoki's toughness. He'll adapt like he always seems to after losses but Gil's five round clinic deserves respect. Aoki's jiu-jitsu is elite for mma. What he needs is a better shot and some hands to compete with the big boys, nuff said.

Judo? What are you talking about? No-gi makes 80% of Judo null in mma. That and Aoki was clearly shooting for singles the last couple rounds and failing epically. Japanese referees play to his strengths, that and his comp has been weak. JZ had him hurt and Japanese refs come running to preserve their golden goose, pathetic.

Akiyama dominated the fight with Judo throws. As well as saying his competition has been weak? Alvarez, Cavalcante, Hansen, Uno, Kawajiri, and Aurelio are some top names he's beaten...sooo, I have no idea what your getting at dude, Aoki is a solid guy.

In my criticism I used the JZ fight, only nubs call him Calvalcante, which occurred in Dream or K1 Heroes, not the UFC. Akiyama is probably the best best Judoka in MMA and he lost to a TUF contestant. I also said Aoki has elite jits for mma so get your shit straight.

Aoki is a complete innovator. The man has taken Jujitsu and Judo to a higher level than anyone in MMA. People criticize him for his flipping of the bird after break hirota's arm. first off, Hirota didn't tap, so he had to break it, and second Hirota kept talking shit about Aoki before that fight so aoki had the right to flip him off, he is one of the most respectful and humble people there is. Shit talking is not acceptable in Japan seeming how they are so humble and respectful.

@guyverrob I'd say he would easily be top 5 anywhere he fights. Dream is a very strong promotion, so the level really isn't any higher in the UFC or Strikeforce. The likes of Penn, Edgar, and Melendez are up there as well, but Aoki's grappling is 2nd to no one. He has alot of pride in being a Japanese MMA fighter, so he wouldn't switch for the world.

Shinya Aoki is a fucking bad ass. He is probably the best submission expert in the game today. He is ruthless and inventive in his fighting. He is definitely one of the most entertaining fighters in MMA, and this is coming from someone who is mainly a fan of striking.

That mount he kept getting is like impossible to get out of, you might not be able to posture up and throw down knock out shit, but man. Aoki is probably the best grappling in the MMA game to date. I've seen nothing like, he is my favorite since Genki Sudo.

@AudienceKiller66 Aoki is the bomb. I just wish he would've done a little better at Strikeforce. Respect to Melendez for executing a game plan perfectly. It exposed Shinya's one weakness, a lack of a standup game. If I was Aoki, I'd hire Freddy Roach or someone like that to teach boxing. His grappling is so far ahead of the average fighter, he is already one of the top lightweight fighters. If he had standup, he would be unstoppable.

@gringofreestyler Yeah, props to melendez but in my eyes he didn't to much to actually "win" that fight. Yeah he stopped the takedowns but he wouldn't get close to Aoki. I think Aoki's problem was just the fact that it's a lot different in a ring than in a cage, he has never been in a cage until he was warming up for that fight. But yeah his stand up is improving. He was throwing a lot of head kicks in his last fight and he did really well. Aurelio didn't have a chance.

@guyverrob They are only good if your using a high guard anyways, cuts down on the slipperiness. Honestly, Melendez had a good game plan and he stuck too it, but I didn't see anything that really made him decisively win. I'm pretty sure there is a DREAM rematch on new years eve.
