The 6 months has to do with the window period, not the availability of the tests. You can buy screening tests over the counter if you wish, and have one within an hour. But if you are in the window period, it is pointless to test. So testing 1 week after exposure would be virtually useless.

The answer is it depends. Depending on the amount of the exposure, and the health of your immune system at the time of the exposure, the tests can be positive in as little as a month.

The reason they say 6 months, is that is pretty much the maximum "window period" from exposure until a person who is infected with test positive.

Unfortunately a negative test 1 week after exposure is pretty meaningless. Negative tests after 6 months are pretty reliable. Hope that helps.

People who give blood, don't know that their blood can be investigated anonymously when tracking some diseases like AIDS.
