@METHODMAN2828 You forget the Army's place in Operation Overlord there were hardly any Marines there on the Beach Landings and those Army guys in my eyes who gave up their lives to 88 artillery and MG-42 fire all for their country and freedom they were the real heroes, they gave up their today for our tomorrow and that will always be remembered.
@TPDManiacXC626 Wth are you on about? Are you comparing how good men that died under a certain branch died with more honor then the others? If you are, the go fuck yourself you ignorant ass. Re-word your comment
@TPDManiacXC626 Hey soldier," a dogface called to Sledge as he rested for a moment on the side of the road during a march. "You look tired and hot, soldier. Why don't you make the army get you a truck like me?
"Go to hell," Sledge yelled.
Straightaway, a another dogface yelled "stop calling that guy a soldier. He's a Marine. Can't you see the emblem? He’s not in the army. Don't insult him" (27).
having a pissing contest on who had it tougher in which theater is a pretty low blow to the memory of fallen soldiers from that dark period of history.
Many soldiers froze to death and many lost limbs to frost bite. They didn't even have enough morphine for the wounded. Day and night, they had to put up with artillery fire from some of the most advanced weapons.
the battle of the bulge was the scariest environment imaginable. No they didn't put up with rain and jungle rat, but they had to put up with below 0 degrees temp, snow, fog, zero visibility, lack of winter clothing. The guys in the front lines were surrounded by a powerful army, cut off from supplies, food, medecine, out numbered for weeks. They had to pick their shots because they didnt have enough ammo.
The diseases the marines put up with were the same diseases that killed more japs than marines gun fire. The Americans had much better medicines. Yes, the japs never surrendered but that most often led them to foolish tactics such as banzai charges where they rarely even got halfway of the American lines.
First of, there were more army divisions in the pacific than marines. Okinawa, for example was more of an army operation than marines and that was the deadliest battle of the pacific. second, people say all kinds of things to give respect. The only difference with the marines is that they record it and use it to put down the army cuz of their inferiority complex. last, more soldiers died in the battle of the bulge Alone than all the battles the marines fought the entire war. The diseases t
also to all you marine fanatics, no, the marines didn't have it rougher. Would u honestly rather fight the greates military force the world had ever seen (nazis) with better weapons, tactics, generals, soldiers, and intelligence than a bunch of 5 foot 6 jap soldiers running around yelling banzai while u get to sit nice and pretty in ur whole mowing them down with machine guns and mortar fire?
@halea41 you are stupid the pacfic was with out mercy or rules with malaria and a savage inhuman army, the Germans not the nazis were normal people in Europe which is a nice place.
@halea41 please read "With the old Breed" and do some research on the Pacific War. The Japanese were ruthless, they were not afraid of death and would do anything to kill an American. If only you were there you would understand. Stop being ignorant and disrespectful and do some research. Oh and the Marines had it way tougher you jackass.
I found this series really unbearable to watch. I had to literally force myself to finish the series so that I didn't waste my money on Netflix. The story was too scattered and undeveloped and the characters didn't really reach the audience. I also found the actor who played sledge to be a bit irritating with his annoying little face. I guess I can't really blame them cuz b.o.b set the standard much too high.
"With the Old Breed" convinced me to join the Corps. All my family were Army, Navy and Air Force. I wanted to be the best. And after Beruit, the decision was easy.
My favorite thing about Eugene was just how genuine a person he was. The two scenes that pretty much had me in tears were when he held that Japanese grandmother as she died in agony after her home got hit with a mortar. And the other was when he came home and collapsed crying refusing to hunt birds with his dad. Can't imagine the horrible things that men like these carried with them, but for him to have remained a good person after the war is phenomenal. I can't wait to read his book.
Thanks Eugene for writing your book and as a real combat Infantryman i understand and feel how you did when you try to tell people what you've gone in combat but you can't and to everyone out there that reads this i hope now people will understand what we as Infantryman what we go through while in combat and when we come home it's not fun for us. Thanks Eugene and SF Marine !

It's amazing that he came back alive.Eugene Sledge and every veteran in the world should be remembered for the brave actions that they have done.My god,let there never be a war as crucial as that again.
This movie is epic and im 12 years old. this is good for me to learn more about history like the the bombing on heroshima idk if i spelled it right....
The fact is, there is nothing so spiritually debilitating as war and witnessing the death and carnage that goes with it. My prayer is that one day, somehow, some way, we can finally once and for all leave war behind us and settle our differences in peace and by working together. But I am dismayed to think that is only a dream and we will instead only succeed in destroying ourselves because that is much more in our nature than peace and understanding.
This is why we sleep soundly at night, in a warm bed. This is why we can walk outside of our house and feal relatively safe. This is why we can live the "good life", or "live it up" here in america. So next time you see a little kid playing in the street, smile on there face with out a care in the world this is why. Remember these men next time you and your friends are at the movies etc; bcuz it is soley becasue of men like this that you can do that in such a care free manor.
ppl need to learn who the USMC are bc half my friends thought it was the army who did all of this. they thought the marines were ppl who shot guns on naval ships. so if any1 who thinks the army gets front line action they are rong. to this day the airforce does their campaign then the navy fires then the marines go in and once they secure that position the army comes and holds the position
@2BeLikeABeatle shows you don't know shit to be fair, The USMC are a combined force of, Naval, aerial and land based units, The army took small parts in the fighting in the pacific, but played the full role of the U.S in Europe. Make sure your 100% correct before you try lecture people my friend.
My father was in WW II. He as on Guam, the Phiilppines and okinawa. He won the Bronze star. When I was a kid I remember him screaming in his sleep about the war. Now I can only imagine what he went through. I thank all these vets so much for what that went through and how they fought for our country
When I saw Ban of Brothers, it made me want to go join the military...but after watching the Pacific, that makes you strongly discouraged...I think BoB was really sad, especially the concentration camp episode, but the Pacific shows you more in depth the horrors of war
Looking at the life of a guy like Eugene makes you realize how disrespectful , silly ignorant and meaningless it is to use the term "Hero" for a footballer, rugby player, basketball player, actor etc.
I like the change in his character during the show. Especially in episode nine, where he is changed in a diffrent guy.
I liked Leckie too, but Slegde is in most episoded and made bigger changes then leckie. I like the part in the train in the tenth episode, where his friend leaves without waking him up, it was so sad and yet beautiful.
James Sims "Arnhem Spearhead" is another fantastic read from the perspective of a young infantryman (in this case a British Paratrooper) in WWII. I'd encourage you all to check it out if you enjoyed E.B. Sledge's "With the old breed".
@centurion180ad i can read jackass, go enjoy your hippie, cushy life, paid for by our nations soldiers... by the way, im reading four books rite now :P
@spartanthree8 Are you referring to the heroin out of Afghanistan sold on American streets by their CIA lackeys, or to the oil plundered out of Iraq sold by the energy-mafia? Last time I checked soldiers are paid out of corporation taxes, and do not contribute themselves to America’s GDP. President Eisenhower said it himself, that ultimately all military spending is waste.
THE PACIFIC was not anywhere near graphic enough, to do a justice to the horrors faced by the First Marine Division. Imperial Japanese forces had direct fire antiboat guns that would penetrate AMPHTRACS causing horrific carnage. The surf & beach was chock-full of mines with boobytraps. From the high water mark to the airfield brush line, was full of mines, obstacles, and field fortifications. Exposed coral would magnify shrapnel. Then there was Bushido of the Japanese soldier.
Really, really enjoyed the final episode of the pacific, especially the end where it shows the actors and the real men they portrayed and what they did after the war, very moving to me personally. I remember my grandfather who was a combat medic in european theather of WW2, he was a hard working, good family man, who like everyone else tried to put the war behind him and get on with his life. He raised 1 boy and 3 girls, one of the my mother.
Sidney Phillips looks like he couldn't be more than twelve years old......unbelievable courage these men had. Truly the last of the Old Breed. Kids today should be ashamed of themselves with their rap music and self indulgence....caring nothing about anything more than themselves.
Eugene Sledge wrote an excellent book about his wartime experiences called 'With The Old Breed'. I highly recommend it and Leckie's 'Helmet For My Pillow'.
I have so much respect for the servicemen who serve this country, past and present. Sledge's book opened my eyes to why my family members who have served cannot speak about it. God bless you all.
My father-in-law was a machine gunner at Peleliu and Okinawa, about three companies over from Sledge. They were both seventeen. He got the Purple Heart at the crossing of the airfield. I'm blown away by seeing this series -- everything seems exactly as it was told to me.
Interestingly, my dad was a Coast Guardsman on one of the AKA transports -- they might well have been on the same ship ...
@risasb THE PACIFIC is about one tenth as bad as it ought to have shown say a PG13 as opposed to an R borderline X where it should have been, and one one-thousandth as bad as it actually was, say XXX for inhuman violence.
The landing at Peleliu scenes are wrong in too many important ways, and the Hell’s Kitchen grudge match on Okinawa is totally ignored. After contacting the Mount Shuri Line, the series fast forwards.
Absolutely beautiful description from Eugene Sledge about life before and life after experiencing war. You appreciate the smallest things in life so much more after having gone through such horror. A lesson not easily learned without hardship, but can hopefully be learned by all no matter their life's endeavors, easy or difficult
I always think to myself (being the grandson of a WWII veteran myself), what would today's WWII veterans think of the world? They fought to keep our world safe, but still, I think if the greatest generation will be the only "greatest generation".
I stand in awe of the courage and selflessness of these men. I write this in love for all who serve, whatever branch. No evil can survive against the will for freedom. Such a high price was paid . My prayer is that we remember day to day how valuable and hard won this freedom is. I am breathless at their courage.
@caseysmydog I respect you for saying this. I know many who look at me and ask me WHY I'm so interested in it and so respectful to it. I always tell them the same thing. "If it wasn't for them....where the hell would we be now?" and they never understand. Without these men we wouldn't have what we have now. We'd be stuck living in fear with a man probably just as bad as hitler leading us. It was their will for freedom that drove them to this and all they went through is what makes them heros.
@SS13E3 what the hell is your problem it doesnt matter who played his part, He did a good job playing his part,it takes a lot to try and show what war is like and they did a hell of a job to try and do that, Your freaking dumbass for saying that
I dread what will happen if such great men cease to exist.....sadly i think it's already starting to happen, with America more interested in what the fuck is going on in these dumbass so-called "reality" shows. I think I can tell them what reality is, it damn sure isn't a show full of "me-me" bitches
the worst thing about treating those combat boys in the Great War was not that they had their flesh torn. it was that they had their souls torn out. I dont think he could have said it any better
I really feel sorry for the poor bloke. Before combat, he felt that he had to join for his duty and family history.
After the war, he came out of it having nightmares every night and he wasn't even able to practice his favourite pastime of hunting while his friend was able to get over it more easily. His dad, warned him not to go and he ended up becoming heavily traumatised post-war.
I liked how Eugene Sledge's arrival home was portrayed in the last episode. The part where he broke down when he and his father were going hunting actually brought me to tears. I especially liked the end of the last episode when they showed photos of the real persons and the actors that played them and listed what happened to them during or after the war.
@meljr My exact thoughts! I just watched the last episode and i felt tears in my eyes in the hunting scene with his father, and i feel that the development Eugene's character has been sooo moving through out the pacific.
@meljr yeah me too. Kinda hard to imagine how he fought and killed and was haunted ever since. I wonder how Joe Mazzello managed to keep up a good depiction of Eugene Sledge. He was awesome.
@meljr I think that scene where he broke down and cried showed that the compassion Eugene had for humanity and others survived even after the war. That that fear of his "soul being torn out" as his father warned him did not happen. Eugene seems to me to have been a very compassionate person, and I think that scene showed his compassion won out. Even after being trained to kill Japanese soldiers. I sure would have liked to have met and had the honor to shake hands with that man.
It's people like Eugene Sledge and all the other American servicemen that make me feel proud of their courage and sacifrice. Although I have no interest to join the service. I am inspired by men like Sledge who did extraodinary things.
I don't know why but I find that Joe Mazzello looks like Robin Laing- Babe Heffron from Band Of Brothers. I don't know why

A person DOES N O T really know what life T A S T E S like until they have tasted it.
As in Psalms it says : T A S T E and see that the Lord IS GOOD.
We can 'watch' a film, be a spectator at a rugby match.
Until we REALLY get down and be I N the 'match', we will never really TASTE what it 'tastes' like.
. . . . . . . .
We taste and then we REALLY do see.

Many soldiers froze to death and many lost limbs to frost bite. They didn't even have enough morphine for the wounded. Day and night, they had to put up with artillery fire from some of the most advanced weapons.
halea41 11 months ago
the battle of the bulge was the scariest environment imaginable.

Yes, the japs never surrendered but that most often led them to foolish tactics such as banzai charges where they rarely even got halfway of the American lines.
halea41 11 months ago

My father-in-law was a machine gunner at Peleliu and Okinawa, about three companies over from Sledge. They were both seventeen. He got the Purple Heart at the crossing of the airfield. I'm blown away by seeing this series -- everything seems exactly as it was told to me.
Interestingly, my dad was a Coast Guardsman on one of the AKA transports -- they might well have been on the same ship ...
risasb 1 year ago
@risasb THE PACIFIC is about one tenth as bad as it ought to have shown say a PG13 as opposed to an R borderline X where it should have been, and one one-thousandth as bad as it actually was, say XXX for inhuman violence.
The landing at Peleliu scenes are wrong in too many important ways, and the Hell’s Kitchen grudge match on Okinawa is totally ignored. After contacting the Mount Shuri Line, the series fast forwards.

DeathlyReaper217 1 year ago
I liked how Eugene Sledge's arrival home was portrayed in the last episode. The part where he broke down when he and his father were going hunting actually brought me to tears. I especially liked the end of the last episode when they showed photos of the real persons and the actors that played them and listed what happened to them during or after the war.
meljr 1 year ago 41
@meljr My exact thoughts! I just watched the last episode and i felt tears in my eyes in the hunting scene with his father, and i feel that the development Eugene's character has been sooo moving through out the pacific.

@meljr yeah me too. Kinda hard to imagine how he fought and killed and was haunted ever since. I wonder how Joe Mazzello managed to keep up a good depiction of Eugene Sledge. He was awesome.
avramnovorra 1 year ago
@meljr I think that scene where he broke down and cried showed that the compassion Eugene had for humanity and others survived even after the war. That that fear of his "soul being torn out" as his father warned him did not happen. Eugene seems to me to have been a very compassionate person, and I think that scene showed his compassion won out. Even after being trained to kill Japanese soldiers. I sure would have liked to have met and had the honor to shake hands with that man.
