Actually they are testing a combining transmission failure. I used to work on these. This was a test where they drained the oil out of the combining transmission to do a simulated battle damage assesment. To see what would happen should a combining transmission was damaged and lost all of its fluid. Nothing to do with ground resonanceI spent my carrer with the Army fixing transmissions and rotor systems. I know. Trust me.
Actually you are incorrect. As a Powertrain Repairer (15D/68D) for over 9yrs. We studied this video in depth is a combining transmission failure. So unless you have more time fixing CH-47's I would refrain from calling people dumbasses.
Gona have to disagree. Take a look at the side view video. The failure starts in the rotor system. Fully articulated rotor system, oleo struts removed and chained to the ground equals ground resonance. And ya I guess 9 years trumps 25 plus in tandem rotor maintenance and design.
Ground resonance, in fully articulated multi-bladed helicopters, is a hazardous condition during touchdown. A series of shocks to the landing gear can pass through to the rotor disk and cause an imbalance in the rotor system. Under extreme conditions, the imbalance causes violent oscillations that quickly build and result in catastrophic damage of the entire airframe. In some cases, complete destruction occurs, e.g. body panels, fuel tanks, and engines are all ripped from their mountings.
The imbalance is possible because multi-bladed helicopters include lag-lead hinges at the rotor hub to reduce stresses in flight. Under normal conditions, all blades are spaced at equal angles. Shocks to the rotor mast and hub can cause an imbalance if they are sufficiently violent. Note that two-bladed helicopters are not susceptible to ground resonance because they do not require lag-lead hinges. Two-bladed rotors remain balanced through all flight conditions.
Yeaaaahhh!!! lets waste a couple million dollars on demonstrating what to avoid!! Funny when it is someone else's hard earned money. Oh, I forgot, the US owns the money making machine.
The explanation of ground resonance is correct. But that's not what's happening. They were testing the harmonic resonance. Whitch is the vibration between both blades. It usually happends between 60 and 70% of rotor rpm. It can destroy the complete aircraft.
It's showing the effects of ground resonance. Something that all helicopters with fully-articulated rotor systems are at risk of.
It is basically a hard landing that starts a shockwave going from the ground to the rotor and back to the ground, increasing in intensity until the helicopter is lifted off the ground again.
Basically it's a shockwave sent through the helicopter from the blades being out of balance when the helicopter is in contact with the ground,or when the helicopter strikes the ground and causes the blades to become out of balance. Happens mostly with helicopters with landing wheels and fully articulated rotor systems
sex in helicopters should be prohibited

Actually, this is a classic example of Ground resonance. Perhaps it is a "side effect" of the test you are describing.

Dumb ass, it's a test of ground resonance. You can see that it's CHAINED to the ground. A gear box test to destruction doesn't work like that.

It aint anything to do with resonance, the blade on the rear rotor becomes loose, and as the rotors slow down the momentum gets worse and worse

this is fuckin' ridiculous, do they plant a helicopter tree that gives you copters or what!?

@usernamesuckagain several centuries? the United states has barely been around for two... july 4, 1776 223 years= 2 centuries.

Since "several" means "more than one", 2 centuries seem to fit within the definition. ;)

I think that is what you call an unbalanced rotor. Resonant oscillation.
