It is difficult to credit that someone should believe that Tim Minchin's intelligence surpasses that of 20-odd doctors, and there is no such thing as a 'valid linguistic tool' for anyone that is no longer being taught high school English. Maybe the comment was simply trying to attract attention by overstating Tim Minchin's genius, in which case it was pretty effective as you have proven.

But that is a minor point, I would suggest that the original commenter simply make a comment stating the intended level of sincerity of the original comment. In the interim we can all drink coffee and get on with our lives. Unless you want me to make an extended case? You don't seem like to troll to me, i'll let you decide.

@BunnyInAGasMask I would contend such a statement. I don't think there is any value in devaluing (notice my sneaky wording?) the word. It functions to identify those of truly exceptional ability and insight much more effectively if simple skill cannot be propagated, via popular appeal, to be labelled as genius. My criteria for a genius would be universally intellectually talented to the point of being able to understand at a rate surpassing that of highly intelligent specialists.

I would go so far as to place him among the 'highly intelligent' but genius to me has a lot more to it than his work. Only a...comment. I really am not looking for an argument here. @pigfarts100 Well then, I'm sorry I was cranky. Tom Lehrer is a brilliant piano-playing comedy songwriter and singer from the 1950s and 60s - still living; his stuff has stood up very well. Billy Connolly is a Scottish standup who's also a fine actor and very good singer, plays guitar and banjo pretty well -- comedy often in protest of similar social issues as Tim. Similar bighearted personality who can confidently walk the edge because he's fiendishly smart and very lovable. Like Tim.
