  • sorry guys to burst your bubble!!!! stunning voice, vocaly she has it all, and good looking!!!but her stage presence,,, i watched and it felt not a lot!!!!!you know the feeling when you watch a mary j blige peform, or ah better yet areatha ,,,,,you with them singing every note with all your heart!!!!and i just didnt get it !!!!!anyway later!!!

  • hahah i remember him from COMING TO AMERICA!!!!!!!! loved him

  • I have been looking for a recording of this for years. Love Desiree singing this.

  • That was the taping of the fox late night show that was originally hosted by Joan Rivers. Once, Arsenio Hall guest hosted he received rave reviews. And he became the host. I was at that taping and was so amazed by Desiree Coleman's range.

  • They could really sing in the 80's

  • Wow! She's covered up and has talent to boot. How things have changed. I remember seeing her in Mama I want to Sing when I was young. She went up so many octaves I thought the windows would shatter. Absolutely loooooove her voice.

  • Desiree Coleman, Stacy Francis, D'atra Hicks, Jennifer Holiday, Stephanie Mills, Melba Moore & Nell Carter will always be inconquerable Black legendary broadway Queens

  • @deeblk07 you r so right

  • Yes, she's very pretty and a great singer!

  • Sing Girl! I remember when I viewed this performance on Television long ago! lol

  • Wow! Chills! I watched the movie version of Mama I want to sing. Besides Ms. LaBelle one Desiree gave me goose bumps. Today she'd have to dress half naked, gyrate, wear pounds of make up as well as have a 20 in. waist in order to get coverage in the industry. She is more in the Whitney, Mariah, Christina & Celine catagory. Why Ms. Colemans stands out to me is that her voice is clear, pure as well as powerful. She doesn't over sing like Christina. Her voice has a prettier quality than Mariah's.

  • @jazzscherzo Please. She's definitely got it. She just doesn't USE it. For example, she's more beautiful than Beyonce'. Her voice blows Beyonce's out the water. Yet, she plays-down her beauty, and even plays-down her singing. Meanwhile, Beyonce' plays her's up.

I do give props to Dez's integrity. Beyonce' plays innocent, yet, works the stroll, more or less.

Though Desiree's not "commercially" successful, she seems to be more successful, than most, as far as real life goes.

  • @jazzscherzo That's only 'cause she's not hoe-ish.

  • I sure do remember this. WOW!

  • Why the hell didn't the band modulate with Desiree at 3:16? I love the sa-pran-uh sangin', but them musicians need to be shot...Be A Lion has to be delivered by everybody, not just the vocalist.

  • @CDawg WOW...wonderful comment and observation! they really missed it!

  • @CDawg You're right. That kind of threw me. ANY good church band would have known to take it up a step with her right there. WHACK!

  • @CDawg When you say modulate, do you mean "key chage"? If so, the band did not modulate and neither did she. The key never changed at 3:16. The singer just chose alternate notes in the same key.

  • Sang Mrs. Coleman-Jackson...

  • i love her wobbly, judy garland belting!!

  • Well it was nice. But it's not in the original key.... so that's cheating a bit. Lol :) She doesnt have any soul at all.

  • its lacking something...she can sing no doubt. but somthing isnt there

  • Let me put this to rest...go to stepmills page and listen to stephanie mills version live on broadway..then pick your jaws up off the ground...Nobody and I mean nobody sings this or Home like Stephanie Mills..She owns those songs and don't ever forget it...

  • no ashanti killied it...go on my page and look at it...she sung the hell out that song...she put desiree to shame, seriously

  • hold on i gotta here ashanti range cause this woman pulled some jennifer holiday shit and yall said ashanti put her to shame like fa real i'm bout to watch ashantis version now cause i don't believe i've herd it who sung it originally

  • That was irritating!

  • She is a great singer but I have to agree that the connection is not there. The performance lacks energy. She's singing a soulful song. Girl needed to get into the Spirit more and let it show out.

  • ashanti sung this song so well. she put all others to shame imo

  • @igetthatgoodjugg are you being sarcastic?

  • Diana Ross sings the hell out of this song.

  • Yes she fraking does!

  • I think Stephanie Mills does it best. I mean, after all, she's the original...

  • just cuz your the original dont mean nothing...look at Idina menzel in wicked. i have heard plenty better Elphabas then her. The one i saw on BWAY was better

  • Not saying that, to quote you, "just cuz your the original dont mean nothing." I wasn't saying that just because you're the original, you're the best; I was just stating that because she was the original I liked hers the best...she was the VANGUARD for others to succeed. I mean, after all, isn't that the purpose? To succeed the master or the originator?

  • I see your point :) they were first for a reason

  • I went to school with Dez (we both went to the FAME school in NYC). I don't know what you folks are looking for, but you need to see her live. Can any of you go higher than an F two octaves above a high C? She is totally amazing and blessed, and the sweetest person you'd ever want to meet. She is currently married to ex NBA star Mark Jackson.

  • I've worked with her on a movie..."Pastor Brown" last summer.....she is INCREDIBLE!! Gospel is her forte.....and I am waiting for her 3rd project to drop...she's working on new music now!

  • Her new song is on here, on YouTube. You should check it out! :)

  • Wow, you folks are coming down hard. Wasn't the best vocal performance, but the sound quality/recording is poor as well - turn the treble down

  • She has no feeling...she can sing herself to death but if theres no emotion theres no point. PERIOD

  • her voice is amazing but she does not connect with the audience.

  • DAMN, that was good.

    But; it was imperfect; because the emtions and the techinques were used in the wrong times. She didn't know how to get the lyrics across. Originally, this song is inspirational, but she didn't exactly portray that. HEr voice is amazing thoughh;

  • Gurl U Better Sang Huney!!!!!! And Ya Look Good

  • HOLY CRAP!!!

    she is amazing

  • wow... just wow

  • WOW - SHE. IS. INCREDIBLE. BUT - for some reason, I personally didn't like it. I don't know why. There's not doubt she can't sing - she blew the place apart! wooh! But I also see what GospelAccording2Me is saying. Although, I personally don't see it as a problem. Yet I don't like the way she sung it, I don't know why. Maybe It's just Diana Ross Favouritism or something. No doubt she's good looking though - 9/10 :D - She blew me away.

  • Okay, I know I'm going to get tons of grief for this but I have to say it: I have never thought this girl was anything special. I remember watching this the very night it aired and thinking that Ms. Coleman had major pitch problems. At the time I thought she just needed some polishing and grooming. I was so surprised to see later clips of her and she still had the same issues!! Maybe that's why she's NOT a household name today. Beautiful young lady, though.

  • If you believe Desiree has "major pitch problems" why are so many of her videos favorited in your YouTube profile?

This performance is flawless and you know it!

  • I have them as favorites because I enjoy watching them and I think she's a lovely lady. Anyone with decent hearing can tell she's got pitch problems. That comment isn't meant as a slam, it is simply fact. Far from flawless, but that is just my opinion. Obviously the court of public opinion sides with me or Ms. Coleman would be a major recording star. Still, I respect your right to call this performance flawless. Peace. :)

  • But you're a hypocite if you say you don't mean your comments as a slam because I read your other comments about her and they are not constructive but borderline vicious.

And to your comment that "the court of public opinion sides with you": Are you telling me that no major recording artist has pitch problems?

  • I'm not a hypocrite at all. I'm simply calling it like I hear it. Regarding comments on other Coleman performances, I don't think any of them are vicious. I admit, some may be viewed as severe, but I think they can also be considered constructive. Also, they are just MY opinions. And, I didn't say that there are no major artists with pitch problems. There are a number of vocalists that have problems holding their pitch in live settings. Obviously, Ms. Coleman is one of them.

  • just leave him/her alone. You're starting an almost unneccessary argument. He/She acknowledged ur point of view - gheesh! Some ppl.... honestly...

  • I guess Patti Labelle doesn't know a good singer when she hears one...

  • great hair, Patti!

    haha

    Desiree, that was genius

  • lol - WTH?!

  • on the intro: it's almost like patti can't bring herself to praise anybody but herself. just kidding. i remember desiree coleman from her role in the film GO TELL IT ON THE MOUNTAIN in which she sang and acted so powerfully and so beautifully.

  • Wow shes really pretty and I love that song!

  • I remember seeing this when it first aired and I have been wanted to see it again every since. I saw this performance on Arsenio that one time as high school senior and the memory has lasted all these years. Her performance brings tears to my eyes. Thank you thank you for posting this video. She is a true talent.

  • You sure "ARE A LION" Desiree!!!!!! your spirit touches me everytime!!!

  • amen!!! Sang girl!!

  • Moving...simply moving performance..SANG GIRL!!!

  • Q-Borough STAND UP!!!!!

  • I remember watching this show the night it aired. I was stunned by the power of Desiree's voice. She is amazing. Thanks for posting the clip. I appreciate her voice even more today.

  • Greatest singer in the game, from the church to, Mama I want to sing, to Hollywood, to wife, Not bad for a girl from Queens New York.

  • DITTO!!!. No one has inspired me, touched me or made me cry more than Desiree (which by the way is pronounced ree not ray)

  • Thanks for your comment to me regarding Desiree not Desiray, I can hear Mama Coleman calling her now.....

  • Oh in my original message I forgot to mention and a student and alumni of the world acclaimed High School of Music and Art "The Fame" school. She was the soprano section of the gospel music chorus.

  • God told her to "sing for me" Thats what she's doing. Hey, i am not even a churchgoer, but i can see she has an ora about her. She is a lovely human being.

  • Her husband never became "the next great point guard", and she never became "the next great singer".

  • Wow. O.O

  • Have you ever felt, as though you head is about to explode? I hope i am not getting ill. But if thats what happening i appreciate it. What a singer, what a voice. absolutely lovely. Thank you for this.

  • Maybe it's good that she didn't become famous. She may have even decided to chose her family first. Hollywood is a beast. She's stable with a stable family.

  • i was like....she's not gonna be that great if she didn't get recognition, damn that means there are TALENTED ASS BITCHES OUT THERE!! that never got a chance, WHY!!!!!! annie lennox...WHY!!!!

  • Jesus this was a singing child who did not get what she deserved! She was a real singer like Shanice, Tracie Spencer and so many others and who are we stuck with Now!!!

  • DEZ's voice is phenominal and if you haven't heard DEZ's voice then you need to hear her voice. DEZ never became the big star that she should have become.

  • WHEW!! Bless ya for sharing all this good stuff by Dez. Been searching for it for a good long while. She's still the same sweet, humble child of God that you see on these videos and God has just strengthened those pipes! Dez, we are gonna need you to step on out and show the world what true anointing is.

  • Oh my I remember this as if it was yesterday, we were singing in the same group then and going ot the same church!!!!

    Thanks for the post

  • This is a flawless performance by an amazing singer!

    I love her!

  • i wonder what happen to her

  • Awesome, she is one of the most talented singer that has never gotten her recognition. She has bubbled under for years and has more to offer than most singers today. Glad to see her finally on you tube.
