I play both brawl and melee competetively. From my point of view: Melee is clearly better when played competitively (fact). Brawl doesn't suck when played competitively (fact).

Most brawl players knows that melee is better suited for competitive play. Though most melee players come to the conclusion that brawl is a piece of sh*t that's not an exact replica of melee in terms of game mechanics and preferred play-styles.
