Yes, I saw that once. Thanks. Diego knew his own worth; he was known to walk out of good-paying juergas because the senoritos wouldn't pay him the proper respect!
According to Don Pohren, Diego refused to play all night and Nino Ricardo concluded he was a fake, until finally at about 7AM Diego asked for the guitar and his playing almost brought Nino Ricardo to tears, and he realized he was the one who had been had.
Pohren also described a meeting between Sabicas and Diego that left a deep impression upon Sabicas. So much so that he offered Diego a choice of several guitars he had obtained. Apparently, Diego chose the worse sounding one
Yes. And this sample justifies Diego's reputation. For me it's the absolute essence of flamenco, more so than any of the other greats. A different "aire"...
Incidentally, Pohren mentions a very interesting account of Sabicas meeting Diego on one of his few trips back to Spain. Apparently, Sabicas was deeply moved by Diego's playing and his persona.
It had the same effect on me! Because of that book, I travelled to Cordoba to order a flamenco guitar from Manuel Reyes. Make sure you get ALL of Donn Pohren's books. They will drive you nuts!!!
Thank you. Yes, that is Charles's photography. How do you know him? I know him through purchasing his Flamenco Gitano book back in '74, but never met him personally, only by email.
He is a well known photographer. Not just because of his excellent artwork, but also because of his photographic inventions. Google him, if you have not yet, and you will be impressed. He has also shown his work at the museum where I work. Our staff was really into his exhibition and enjoyed him tremendously.
He doesn't perform as great on camera. He's so much better in recordings like this, wow Ole Diego!

What is the significance of the playing cards stuff into his shoe?
Dzakovich000 1 year ago
@Dzakovich000 Don't really know, unless he just finished playing cards. I don't think we'll ever know.

You are correct, David! I have a copy. It's got some great stuff on it, even the non-flamenco music.

I read about Diego in George's book on flamenco guitar. That book devastated me! This culture is so powerful.

What a beautiful piece. Charles Berger's photography is spectacular and does justice to Diego's music.
