  • He is a real superstar artist, not like the shiti "celebs" you find today on TV

  • this is one awesome dude

  • Tom is greyt...Oi

  • batman

  • Big Time gets better with each listening and viewing. After 15 years nothing else seems to come close to so much energy and sonic mastery. The performances are extraordinary.

  • i have only heard the Bulletboys version. This is awesome!!

  • Must .. have.. tabs.. for that BASS LINE MUDDAFUKKA!

  • @Lessproductivestuff look up the batman riff and at a bit of jazz to it ;)

  • @Eoinmoo4 yeah but which bits of jazz?? and add a great lyric and performance.come on it s not quite that easy or simple. it s genius cut and paste.

  • @jackno7daniels

WERD. I just got into Waits. This tune is the pandas nuts.

  • @jamescaptainfarrell Dont you mean dogs bollocks?

  • that stand up bass is killing it!!!!

  • Why do I suddenly feel the urge to sing the original Batman theme song?

  • 'Swordfish trombones' is a good Tom wait album.

  • this trippin me out

  • I've uploaded a song that reminds me of this song called 'Santeria Spanish Dream' if anyone is interested. Not as good as Tom, but I suppose not many are...

  • born to perform!

  • This is awesome. I need to check out some more of Tom Waits.

  • Dear friend @SargeEmpath I'm really confused about what music band are you talking. There are so many who have a lot o very good music by refereeing their selves to Agyptian gods or mythology. To what band must I take a hear? Please do inform. In any case I believe that Tom Wait is out of all this. He has his own class... I think....

  • Tom Waits is an acquired taste. I am starting to get it. Or maybe you don't get it at all, but this F'N tune is the shit. Fucking unreal. That bass line is gonna be stuck in my head for days.

  • He forgot to leave heaven when he was born.

  • @djuri1985

Hell. He forgot to leave Hell when he was born.

  • @musicman02 man he's the devil him self

  • Excellent vid posting!! thank you much xXX!!

  • No other artist had ever surpassed Tom at this extra-ordinary kind of music and THAT kind of EXTRA voice.

  • @ConstantinLion What about Egyption death metal masters nile

  • @ConstantinLion What about Egyption death metal masters nile

  • unbelieveable! My mom bought this cassette back in the early 90s and i was hooked on this song. now, i get to see the man perform it, and what a performance it is! getting the dvd right now.

  • That bass is killin it!!!!!!!

  • Can I be reborn as Tom Waits?

  • @Phreekoid Sorry, there can be only one Tom Waits, and he's already been born

  • Tom Waits Hang On St Christopher. On which side?

  • 2:10 = Scott Weiland influence.

  • @crittoprrr What exactly is the influence you're talking about? All I see at 2:10 is Tom dancing in his own inimitable way and singing through a megaphone both being things he's done for years. Possibly even before young Scotty was born. Just curious.

  • @weirdunclebob I think Tom influenced Scotty into using the Bullhorn. I THINK that's what he's talkin' about.

  • @SwampDaddy7 Ah, that would make sense, of course! Thanks =)

  • @weirdunclebob No problem! :) Happy to lend a hand.

  • just imagine hearing this live

  • I love my entire life like a Tom Waits song.

  • Waits is a genius.

But on another matter: Do you put your pagan tongue infidel?

  • Damn, I love him.

  • jus started lisnen to mr waits coz dr parnassus!wat a cool fuck wud have done a gud joker

  • @darboflarboy actually, Heath Ledger based his character partially on Tom Waits.

  • Mr. Waits, you are God Incarnate. a few shots, and I grant you life eternal.

  • Grande classe. Une leçon de sons.

  • My favourite performer, one of a kind.

  • Just blissful-straight out and no holds barred.. the devil can ride.

  • jazz metal fusion O.o

  • Tom Waits is Tom Waits.

  • @LandoftheShanks A)Tom Waits played God in Wristcutters; B)Tom Waits played the Devil in the Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus. Therefore, C) There ain't no Devil, just Tom Waits when he's drunk.

  • @ShaneMacgowanFan93 Tom waits was an alcoholic but has been clean for years. Also given the professionalism for which he is known in show business, it is doubtful that he played the role of the devil inebriated. I am smarter and better than you. You're welcome.

  • @ShaneMacgowanFan93 well put, well put.

  • @theBlackCermoner

Exactly! His growl put to shame some metal

vocalists. Got to love Mr Waits.

  • dude!

  • open it up! the devil can ride!!

  • death metal vocals... ;D

  • How freakin' cool would it be to be able to say you loaned this dude money?

  • Could he be any more awesome?

  • I always know that I'm in for a unique art experience when Tom does his thing.

  • Thanks for posting this! I love me some Waits!

  • Sounds like the soundtrack from a Clint Eastwood or Robert Mitchum thriller...

Looove that bass, the sound's all there

    8^)

  • Powerfull

  • happy birthday tom

  • tom waits is wild!

  • Tom sounds like V8 big block engine... oh yeah... hang on St. Christopher....

  • One thing they'll never say is that he held back too much. Awesome and Unique.

  • Love dripping in to youtube once a night (well, maybe a couple of times) and finding wonderful stuffage like this. Thanks for posting.

  • if u come across a full version of 'till the money runs out' pls let me kmow

  • When I first got into Thomas.....besides the amazing Small Change world, I was really hooked on the bass lines he had on his albums...Step RIght Up, the wonderful bass line of Barbershop, from Foreign Affairs...instantly classic...and was always waiting for more of those...had to wait until this to get another..Hang On St. Christopher....now there's been another drought of them again....

  • Complete nuts...and complete genious...complete awesome...Bruce owes him at least half of his career....

  • Sorry mate, Bruce who?

  • Tom Waits is a genius!

  • Yeah baby!!!!!!

  • Gotta luv it............ he's the Batman of St. Christopher Street.

  • it's not supposed to sound nice. the bulletsboys cover is too soft, too smooth and too contrived when compared to the original.

  • @jshbartolome Hey, that soft, smooth, and contrived got me laid! LOL

  • Fu*k*ng amazing

  • He was managed by the same manager as Frank Zappa, (Herb Cohen) great vid, cheers! 5*****

  • *bows down to the god*

  • When I saw this film I never thought there were any boundaries afterward. Waits just made anything seem possible in a performance. This film was huge!

  • This guy is brutal.

  • ive just gone mad adding tom to my play list. he's fucking great!!!

  • i wonder if this is the same tune BULLET BOYS cover?

    WAITS rules!

  • yes it is the same (the bullet boys did this cover)

  • When I first discovered Tom's music, I realized something...We need more people like him around! It would make everything a little more fun!

  • Theres always the Cookie Monster!

  • does anyone know if this movie had sound fx added or were those added?

    P.S. best driving song ever

  • The sound effects in the film. I encourage you to get a copy. If you don't wanna pay a shitload for an out of print VHS, you can download a torrent of it.

  • i wish i was half as cool as Tom.

  • @RenoRaider nearly impossible, being half as cool as tom waits is equivalent to being 3 times cooler than the fonz.

  • @RenoRaider: I am :D

  • @RenoRaider half? hell id be happy with 1%..!! That would still make me cooler than most of humanity

  • @RenoRaider Hell, I'd take a 10th as cool as Tom.

  • @RenoRaider infinity of coolness can't be halved

  • @RenoRaider I'd go for a quarter.

  • this dude is great!

  • love it!

  • that is just fucking amazing. words cant explain.....

  • He's got everything.

Musician, storyteller, actor, and for crissakes, a hell of a showman.

  • I wish I had 10% of his Talent

  • Unique, uniqueness!!!

  • Nobody home?

Or am I wearing the wrong clothes?

  • Ever think that the world is a tuxedo and you're just a pair of brown shoes?

  • I love Tom Waits and this is great. Question....is it legal to post this to a blog? What are the copyright issues? I notice the embed code is up there, but who owns copyright on this? Thanks in advance.

  • if you embed this video on your blog i don't think there will be any legal repercussions for you. the copyright owner might have it removed from youtube, but they won't come after you personally.

  • staggeringly fabulous. always a complete winner, he's like nothing on earth, too good.

  • My pleasure, tom.

  • ...and last but not least, I would like to thank Michael J. for the dance lessons!

  • lets meetup!

    nice video! xD v0

  • It's a shame this video has only 30,000 views. I think I'm responsible for three or four hundred of them.

  • Visit this one daily, I'm with you! :)

  • Love those playlists, huh? lol. I've got about 40 Waits songs going back-to-back. They've saved my sanity at work.

  • I love the trumpets in this song. This whole thing fucking rocks!

  • this is stranger than mamahoebaskets fiction, but its got a good beat++)

  • Thing is, no one else makes music as dirty and rough and....and rough and dirty and strange and emphatic and ruined and broken-legged and hop along on that same dirty mean poorly attended to post Civil War broken leg cheap assed prosthetic fold it up and get in the car we've got crap to sell at the gun show my darling....than Senor Uncle Tom Waits. Thank you.

  • @molloyx

    Strange comment but...accurate. =)

  • @molloyx very cool comment :D ahaha...

  • He's a living work of art. Fantastic!

  • Another of my fav all time songs...So frikkin good!

  • The drunken janitor dance alone sets him apart from the rest of us.

  • wait a minute you crazy fans. invention=product. tom waits breaths air like you and me. yup, a true living organism. skin and all. it's an act. acting like we all do.

  • the bulletboys did a MEAN cover of this

  • This man is genious. The small men on a small planet hold Tom Waits in high regard. He is our teacher.

  • It changed the lyrics quite a bit for this version. Love it.

  • The lyrics are word for word as the albums...

  • You are correct, I misheard quite a few of them :)

  • Check Tom Waits out in Rumblefish and Down By Law (and many other films he plays a cameo in). Maybe he has been homeless and drunk, but I think he plays at it worst luck - I'm of a generation that doesn't care what he does in his private life although I'd like to think he's okay. He plays a bum spectacularly and has given me so many years of awesome music

  • Actually, Hang On St. Christopher is from "Frank's Wild Years."

  • this is the live version from his production of big time.

  • i believe he's been in the crankcase, that's why his voice is so scratchy, not all those cartons of cigs.

  • What does it mean to be in the crankcase? I'm not familiar with that expression.

  • At a guess it means he is on meth.

  • He's not homeless, so what ! Big deal ! His music is still genuine and that's the only thing that matters. Suppose you're dissapointed as well that Santa Claus doesn't really exist.

  • He acts like he's homeless but comes home to a mansion every night. Some schtick!

  • ¡Shame on him! Sorry but I always think that he was performing a character like an actor... I think even that the character is based on what he was in the past... But I don´t want to argue ¡Shame on Tom!

  • Yeah. He's still compelling, though.

  • I don't even get your problem with him.

  • not having a mansion would take all the fun out of being homeless

  • Big deal he was living out of a car at one point in his life, he has earned his mansion.

  • Very cool. I had no clue that the Bulletboy's version was a cover either. Wait's is quite interesting - I totally appreciate it. I'd never heard of him until tonight.

I like the cover version better - prefer old hair bands over the jazz scene.

Just shows that a good song is just that - good stuff no matter who performs it.

  • God, does this guy smoke like 5 cartons of cigarerttes a day? So many people think hes great, but I dont get it. To each his own I guess.

  • Well, well, well -- so the Bulletboys got this song from Tom Waits. I knew it was a departure for them, but never would have imagined it was originally by TW!!

That said, I think the Bulletboys took it to another level and I prefer they're "beatnik metal" interpretation to this one. Never was a fan of sax, though, so it's just IMHO. Thanks for posting this!!!

  • I like that sound. Well, when Waits does it, anyway.

  • I wonder if waits was the first to sing into a megaphone

  • spa

  • I remember I first heard this song as a teen when the glam metal band Bulletboys released a cover in the late 80's. Not knowing it was a cover at the time, I was amazed that they could go from "Smooth Up In Ya" to a song this good. Live and learn! thanks for posting Tom's superior version.

  • At least the music and words keep us goin'! We can ignore such hasty comments until they are deserving.

  • I don't care how many times I hear these songs, I am left with a new appreciation and in awe every time.

  • Absolutely Calssic! Thanks so much for posting this.Remember seeing this when it came out.Hope it gets a dvd release. He is truly an incomparable genius

  • thank u tom...franks wild years defines my 20s...

  • Yes.. 'Franks' was the first of my many waites albumns. A must for the uninitiated. A soundtrack for any country boy who has ventured to the 'big smoke'
