Your "fancy shells" are CRAB KILLERS. They are FORCED into those shells BY HAND. The paint is toxic and the crabs will eat them. Its okay to buy a painted crab as a rescue, but do not buy painted spare shells!!! If you don't believe me look into it!
The only think they say right in that video is that hermit crabs are social animals. The tank setup she has does not meet the hermit crabs basic needs, not to mention that it is horribly overcrowded. Also, painted shells are unhealthy for crabs, and the methods used to get them into those shells is horribly cruel, so she shouldn't avocate painted shells.

Painted shells, in addition to restricting humidity and potentially dehidrating hermit crabs, can be toxic to hermit crabs, and flakes of the paint that are eaten by the crabs can cause real problems. They may be pretty, but they aren't healthy.

I got a crab from petsmart and he was in a natural shell already then I got another crab from petco she was in a painted shell but then I gave her a couple shells to choose from and she moved into a nice roomy natural shell :)

She is actually relaying the exact info that the pet stores have in the panthlets. Instead of slaming a person its better to educate.. Painted shells are toxic. Don't you research these things? those shells will kill them, paint contains many harmful chemicals that they breathe in everyday. Also hermit crabs are next to impossible to breed in captivity. They all come straight off the ocean. Thats something that you as an "expert" should really know

i think hermit crab painted shells is bad becuase i was giving my crab a bath and paint was gone, i looked in the cage and saw paint the same color as my crab. by the way

@j0jo22 It depends really, what are you feeding it? Make sure it's not seasoned. No Salt and pepper, also put 2 things of water in the cage. One distilled water or equivalent(not tap) and one seawater(you can be aquarium salt and mix as instructed not with tap water though). Give them enough water they can get in it and dip their shells and still be able to climb back out. They drink one and bathe in the other. Also make sure you high humidity. Like around 80% or so.
Just thought I would throw some inside. The paint comments are right. They will eat chips and get sick/die. Also, if the crab is TOO brave it could be a sign that it's dying. You want them active, but also to act like a normal crab and be a little scared and back into it's shell. When they are really sick or dying they will sometimes refuse to retreat into safety. Also check for specs on them. If they have mites (google it) move on to a new store as the whole tank is infested.

They say you don't want to take wild hermit crabs as pets, when really it's actually way less stress than from pet stores, as pet store hermit crabs are wild caught too, and they have to go through shipping, etc etc, so if they're taken straight from the wild they are more likely to live. Especially if you do practically the opposite of what's told in this video. I'm 13 and I know that. Idiots.
Hermit crabs tend to take off pieces of their shells to make it more comfortable for themselves, and because of the calcium content, they eat the bits of shell they pick off. If the shell is painted, it will hurt the crab. I've owned hermit crabs for years and I've observed that if I get a crab in a painted shell and put natural shells in the habitat, they will almost immediately change shells.
@TheDswinson No, they should be fine. It's hard to tell whether a hermit crab is male or female, except if it has a large amount of hairs on its back and legs (to hold eggs in place after mating).
@TheDswinson probably, but they usually dont harm eachother, they just switch shells :P Rarely their limbs will break or fall off, but that will grow back, so dont worry.

i get REAL fancy shells like ones that are liike spiky and natural not painted and yuck and i have two hermit crabs named gabriel and sebastian and they are really getting along and it is more fun to have two than one because they will play together and share food and if they dont have other hermit crab friends they may not be social with you and your family

Painted shells are toxic. Don't you research these things? those shells will kill them, paint contains many harmful chemicals that they breathe in everyday. Also hermit crabs are next to impossible to breed in captivity. They all come straight off the ocean. Thats something that you as an "expert" should really know

Deppie, if you were the expert of hermit crabs then you would know NOT to have them in painted shells, and a bigger tank. Would you like to be living in a tiny little tank with 2 other hermits? The tank also looks like it doesn't have a heat source. You are the oppisite of an expert, Debbie. Please stop making videos "teaching" people the right way to have hermits. The right way is the oppisite way your taking care of them.

i think hermit crab painted shells is bad becuase i was giving my crab a bath and paint was gone, i looked in the cage and saw paint the same color as my crab. by the way
small= 4-6yrs old
medium=7-9yrs old
large=10 and up

I have heard the painted shells are bad , but the pet store i go to they do not have as much hermit crabs that do not have painted shells and painted shells could die 2 to 3 mounths

@j0jo22 It depends really, what are you feeding it? Make sure it's not seasoned. No Salt and pepper, also put 2 things of water in the cage. One distilled water or equivalent(not tap) and one seawater(you can be aquarium salt and mix as instructed not with tap water though). Give them enough water they can get in it and dip their shells and still be able to climb back out. They drink one and bathe in the other. Also make sure you high humidity. Like around 80% or so.

Just thought I would throw some inside. The paint comments are right. They will eat chips and get sick/die. Also, if the crab is TOO brave it could be a sign that it's dying. You want them active, but also to act like a normal crab and be a little scared and back into it's shell. When they are really sick or dying they will sometimes refuse to retreat into safety. Also check for specs on them. If they have mites (google it) move on to a new store as the whole tank is infested.

I like to paint the whole crab by dipping it in a can of oil based paint. After several coats they are a nice, uniform color.

They say you don't want to take wild hermit crabs as pets, when really it's actually way less stress than from pet stores, as pet store hermit crabs are wild caught too, and they have to go through shipping, etc etc, so if they're taken straight from the wild they are more likely to live. Especially if you do practically the opposite of what's told in this video. I'm 13 and I know that. Idiots.

Hermit crabs tend to take off pieces of their shells to make it more comfortable for themselves, and because of the calcium content, they eat the bits of shell they pick off. If the shell is painted, it will hurt the crab. I've owned hermit crabs for years and I've observed that if I get a crab in a painted shell and put natural shells in the habitat, they will almost immediately change shells.

@TheDswinson No, they should be fine. It's hard to tell whether a hermit crab is male or female, except if it has a large amount of hairs on its back and legs (to hold eggs in place after mating).

@TheDswinson probably, but they usually dont harm eachother, they just switch shells :P Rarely their limbs will break or fall off, but that will grow back, so dont worry.

i get REAL fancy shells like ones that are liike spiky and natural not painted and yuck and i have two hermit crabs named gabriel and sebastian and they are really getting along and it is more fun to have two than one because they will play together and share food and if they dont have other hermit crab friends they may not be social with you and your family

@ownyou23 I'm sorry, but please don't answer when you don't know what your really saying. Painted shells, are bad. Period. Whether you notice or not, painted shells will chip and hermit crabs could eat it. That would not be good. So why take the risk when non-painted hermit crabs are just as nice?

@ROckDEcoy i know exactly what im saying ive owned these pets for several years... 1 death occured due to post purchase depression... the paint doesnt ever hurt them... its the lamination put onthe shells that kills.... so get ur shit right and if your smart and change your food and keep fresh food in they wont eat it... they eat when there hungry not when u put food beside them they eat at night as well.... if you use not toxic paint that has no coating... it wont hurt them ... beleive me.

@parakeetman22 yes, I'm sorry for the confusion, but painted sheels are not a good idea. The may look nice, but the could be toxic, so please don't take the risk. It may or may not be the cause of death for your hermit crab, but don't have it to stress about. :)
