I've heard people talk in "tongues" before and I've ALWAYS thought "what a load of crap" THAT is. It's nonsense. However, I think it was Dan Barker who said that it is a good feeling because it FREES a brain from the constraints of language, which can become cumbersome to a tired brain. It makes sense, because a person talking in tongues BELIEVES he's doing something amazing, but they're not having to THINK AT ALL! They just babble...
Hey there! Thanks for making these videos! It's great to hear others and their release from supernatural dogmatic thought. If you haven't already seen him, here is GREAT guy who has thoroughly and extensively talked about his Pentecostal deconversion:
The "tongues" aspect is fascinating ... I almost wish I could have had an experience like that. Kind of like being part of the magic of the genuine belief that a young child has in Santa (my only comparable experience).
I imagine you could achieve something similar with mdma and a strong hallucinogen... however, I don't feel I should recomend it and regardless, it's difficult to predict the actual effects of a hallucinogen (visuals, aurals, tactile, delusions etc...).
I always wondered about the 'tongues' thing. Aren't you meant to understand some of the words spoken? I've never seen footage of someone doing it that had anything intelligable as language to me in it. :)
I don't know...some churches claim you do, others claim you don't. Mine thought it was your spirit talking to god, or the holy ghost talking to god, or god talking through you.
But no, it's not a "language" at all, it's just babbling. Occasionally you'll see someone stand up and "interpret" the glossolalia (with the help of the holy spirit, of course). I'll have to get drunk and try to record some of it for ya, lol.
You should watch the movie Marjoe which is about a former child evangelist who went through a de-conversion. It's a documentary (which won an Oscar) showing the inner workings of the evangelical movement. I think that you would find his use of music to be interesting.
