i love my 02 explorer. i prefer it over my friends Cherokee, Liby and Grand Cherokee. i do lots of towing and does great. the 4x4 works like a charm even in the off road conditions (grew up in and around ORVs so i understand) never any problems except for general maintenance. just this summer did two 750 mile road trips and from Detroit Michigan to North Carolina (1600 miles) if you take care of your vehicle it will take care of you. my Explorer has with 155K on it
Did it ever occur to you that in such a collision, the frame is DESIGNED to bend like that in order to help dissipate energy?
It's not built as an offroad vehicle, but having taken a new Sport Trac through some extremely rough terrain, I can say they handle just fine off the pavement.
Please, show me said "history of exploding". Because the last 2 generations (the current especially) have improved by leaps and bounds.
@dave777blaster, the nick name exploder came from the 2nd gen explorer that were fitted with firestone tires.
THE TIRES EXPOODED NOT THE TRUCK.
not ford's fault, the 2nd gens explorer are great vehicles, i happen to own one and love it. all of the bad press on the explorer is all from firestone's shitty ass tires. ignortant people like you keep the memory of that alive tho. thanks man
@jrowe6 It was ford's fault, not firestones.... Ford designed a bad suspension which was bulky and heavy and couldn't absorb the road well enough to keep the passangers happy, so they ran the Firestones at a very low pressure, which made the ride soft but compromised the tire's integrety at high speed. Don't get me wrong, I love Ford, I just purchased a 2009, they are one of (if not the) best out today, designing good cars and not mooching off our gov (GM). *Automotive Technology Graduate
@chad8329 do some research on that, what i have found says otherwise. got cut off on the highway yesterday, had to swerve into the lane next to me, turned hard enough the tires where squaling and yet the steering was precise, handling was firm, and the sway was not at all overwheling. its an suv, not a sedan, it handles like an suv, people just dont know how to drive, and those tires were indeed garbage. look it up.
@jrowe6 Dont need to, I sat in steering & suspension class for 3 hours of lecture most of which covered the whole incident, the tires were shitty, but it was Fords call to run them at low pressure, thus causing the treads to seperate... the goodyears that replaced them had more layers inside (at fords request) and were run at similar pressure. But its all history anyway, I dont like either tire mfr, Michelin, Toyo, FTW
@chad8329 ok we are on the same page. i read an article about there being miscommunication between ford and firestone. the explorer in its self i do not believe to be a faulty design, but ford is still partially responsible for not taking care of the situation. they wanted to run 26psi i believe, those firestones were made cheap and required like 32 psi to be sturdy enough. neither company would compromise between quality of the tires and balancing the money involved.
@jrowe6 when i looked into it i did some more extensive research into the vehicle its self, which was put through a battery of tests when this issue was at its peak. there were law suits stacking up big time and neither ford or firestone wanted to foot the bill. it was proven many times the ford explorer was no more likely to roll over in a blow out situation than any other suv in its class. the attention turned to the tires. what was found was many of the of the tires that failed came from the
@jrowe6 (cont) same plant. where quality control was not monitored very carefully or something. i forget the specifics, the point is one of the firestone plants was making extra cheap shitty tires and those tires were the ones making this issue into what it was. the tires coming from the other firestone plants had similar failure rates as most other tires on the road, but the failure rates on the shitty tires was like 3x normal, and they were all fitted on explorers.
@dave777blaster dave blaster, im 19 and I know more about vehicles than you do, quit talking shit about the "exploder" because when it comes down to it WITH all statistics accounted for, Ford is the best choice of automaker there is. And the fucking hell it is poor off-road, I take mine 4x4in all the time and it handles like a beeeeast. You know nothing about quality vehicles, all you care about is the fancy look and you get sucked into all the BS that other people smash ford about...
i have a 96, i hit a brand new vw in rear passenger side doing thirty five. i scratched my bumper and cracked my head light. i total the rear of their car. very good suvs
No matter wat I hit my 02 doesn't break! A Monte Carlo hit me from behind doing 45 and I have 2 scratches., Monte Carlos bumper was near the windsheild
My aunt was in a wreck in her explorer and it saved her life. She hit head on with a diesel. Based on the actual wreck itself, I would get one. She also wants another.
@One3teen the landcruiser isn't even close to being the biggest suv in the world, and range rover is bigger then it is.Also because of the landcrusiers truck like nature it would be alot less safe then a modern suv.
hmm, i love mine, maybe its just you, ya i think it is. ive never had a problem with mine, runs great even has a v8. why dont you just stop talking. ya i think thats a good idea

FUCK!!! you idiot! Did you know you stupid you really should buckle up! Its not only your driving which could cause crash. Did you know that nowadays even in europe cardesign there is lots of safety issues that has to think and those issues will affect on exterior shapes in final desing... Just because researches tell that part of americans dont use safety belts and therefore if some americans dont use belts safety should still work without belts!!! And thats impossible!
hey dipshit when I said buckle i didnt mean seat belt when i said buckle i meant the passenger compartment isnt supposed to bend when it hits something at 30 mph retard
This car is great my family has had a 2003 for 5 years and it holds up very well to accidents, especially from the rear. A small car hit behind us at 50mph at a traffic light a few years ago and there was only minor damage to the back, the frame was intact while the other car's front end was totaled.

I mean it has a seriously weak Frame.
is poor off road
has the history of exploding hence the name exploder.
As the test shows the frame bending like a piece of plastic
