i have a Sony U-matic VTR BVU-800 that work how do i hook it up to play with? or what should i do with it how do i have fun with it ? where do i get the cables for it ? thank you
@StovetopLife Generally collect until Mum says 'no more'. That was some years ago. I fix basic problems with them such as dry joints or mechanical failures when I have time but I don't have the kit or know-how for electronic tuning problems. It's become an under-used museum.
It is a GREAT collection! =) I the fan of old video equipment. But in my country (I live in Russia) such collection to collect not really because second-hand the equipment costs very expensively and is not on sale almost.
Can you do an experiment for me? Could you play back a TV recording from the U-matic, and select the Teletext button on your TV. Could you see if the Teletext service encoded on the recording plays back successfully, and that you are able to navigate the pages successfully. Many, many thanks.
I use to have a few BVU-800 machines (U-matic) along with a few BVH-500 and a pair of BVH-2000 video recorders, I did get id of them as the computer was way to easy to edit on and I stuck with the old vintage audio gear instead, much easier to fix when it goes wrong :-)
sorry, but to the video poster - why aren't you doing your editing non-linearly? i mean, if its live multicamera shoot, then yeah - cut it together with a vision mixer.
hey, i just remembered, use premiere pro and you can set up a multicamera mode and just cut through your footage.
Great setup. I don't have spase fo so many machines, but I'm using VP9000 + VO5850 +RM450 as edit suite. U-Matic is the REAL thing. It's really nice to hear deck mechanics working and see the leds blinking during edit :-) I'm definetly analog video freak.
Hi, seeing that old U-Matic machine reminds me of the VCR's used at my old high school(Pitman High School, Class of 1980!). The U-Matics were used, rather than projectors, to show movies in the classrooms. The VCR's were cared for by members of the Audio-Visual Club.
Nice! I'm mostly a film guy (have a complete 2-machine 35mm projection setup), but have been accumulating video stuff for the last six months or so, mostly for personal amusement.
I have an Ikegami HL-79E 3-tube camera (lens is currently being serviced), a second parts camera without lens, a BVU-950 3/4" edit deck, and a couple of VO-8800 portable decks. I still need another BVU-950 and an edit controller to do anything useful, however.
all this fits in your closet?

Very cool! Do you repair VCR's or just collect them?

Can these be used as "normal" VHS type VCR's ie from tv? If so how do you connect to a TV?
GanEdenAustralia 1 year ago
@GanEdenAustralia
No, These Umatics record and play composite video sources, and basic stereo analogue audio.
As VHS machines were aimed at the domestic market they have VHF tuners and RF modulators for use with basic TV sets.
However, the Umatics do have RF modulators as an output only, so TVs such as in schools can play the tapes
thomasking55 1 year ago
@thomasking55 Thanks. Don't they have any BNC inputs?
GanEdenAustralia 1 year ago
@GanEdenAustralia yes, they use BNCs for the composite video.
Many machines are NTSC/PAL and SECAM.

Surprised there's no Betamax machine in there! You traitor to videotapes lol!

Very nice! I have a high-band U-Matic and it makes the same noise as yours. Hmmm.

Where did you get that stuff. Think about some Betacam SP decks if you like that old style of editing.
