Eluding to the penny was his way of dealing with not knowing how to say, "I love you" back.That does not mean JJ does not love the character, but rather, JJ realizes the animal is an inanimate object, thus unable to convey true, warm, humanly love. JJ's leaning away was more of an intellectual thinking process.my.02
