  • nottingham sucks

  • sorry, i love their "original" version this one is bad...

  • Rick's bass playing is sensational!!!

  • The Span are still awesome. They still rock hard 40+ years later!

  • most scabs come from nottignham.

  • make that tiresome old fart retire! she is now a stupid untalented old sot!

  • @atfatw When I was 16 she looked fit ; now I'm 60 and she still looks fit. Maddy always had sex appeal - still has.

  • @mickigoe how can you be certain your judgment is still accurate at 60!

  • @atfatw It's not a scholarly intellectual "judgement" I was making - just a thought conceived in lust - ruff !!

  • That slap bass is sensational! And so is Maddy's delivery... five stars!

  • this drummer looks like mick fleetwood to me ! ace

  • The electro guitar solos add nothing. Just sounds like filling time.

Other than that : excellent version.

  • Music !!!

  • I'm a Seghill Laddie and this is a great version....I live next door to a SCAB!

  • @Saxpiper You live next door to a what?? Idk what you mean by "scab".

  • Not really expecting slap bass licks on a Steeleye Span song, but this version definitely had its charms, not the least of which is Maddy is still a commanding presence and voice.

  • Funky bass... not sure it fits this song though. Much prefer the original recording.

  • The drummer here-Liam Genocky-used to drum with Gillan.

  • yeah, this version's pretty fucking odd. it's better if you don't watch them as you listen to it. some of the drumming's up there with the best live modern r'n'b and rap stuff - very much in the style of jay-z's live band (bars of double time, fills all over the shop, that kind of stuff - much more complex than the original). fair enough though, the bass is pretty rank and conspicuous. no slapping!!!!!

  • well said poodlewip. usually i suggest ignoring sub humans, like atfatw, but your comments are spot on!!!

  • @atfatw

You know, you really should get your facts straight - Steeleye's bassist is Rick Kemp, who is still very much alive and kicking.

Tim Hart who sadly passed away on Christmas eve had actually not played with the band for about 25 years.

And quite apart from the inaccuracy of your comments, they are in extremely bad taste. As is your offensive personal attack on Maddy, who is a lovely person and worth a hundred of you!

  • you are a heartless creature.

for one Rick kemp is the bassist and he is very much with us.

you are talking about Tim hart who is sadly not with us any more. but he did so much for the folk world and IS going to be missed greatly not just by his family and friends but the people who loved his music and who he was.

how would you feel if that was someone you cared about...i hope you find out how that feels

i hope you burn in hell for that comment.

  • i know im going to go to hell....i will see you there and we can have it out face to face

  • @atfatw

Just out of curiosity, why is poodlewip evil?

Because he or she dared to challenge you on the crap you've been spouting? Do please elaborate a little for us less enlightened souls......

  • @atfatw

If that was aimed at me, at least have the courtesy to use my correct name - I'm perfectly capable of reading English, although some of your posts barely count as such. However, I see nothing Poodlewip has said that merits burning in hell - unlike some of YOUR comments, which are just vitriolic and vindictive , and quite frankly sound like the ramblings of a total madman...

  • @someonewithtaste you have no taste you scummy wretched little nobody

  • @atfatw

LOL - Oh look, someone let the troll out of it's cave again....Been in prison for the past two years have we? And could you really not have thought up a better reply in all that time?

  • @atfatw

people like me?...do go on, you could help me change.

To attain enlightenment and not be clouded by ignorance.

it has done so well for you.

  • @poodlewip burn in hell? it seems to me goliath that you should think about where you will spend eternity

  • @atfatw it has taken 2 years for you to reply with that. PMSL

i am actually starting to feel sorry for you.

  • @poodlewip I did not know you were a broad. my, but you are real ugly and nasty too. do you have PMS?

  • @atfatw awwww bless you are now trying to slag me off...thanks for the time you are taking doing it and dont worry there will soon be a camera that will be able to take a picture of you without breaking. There is still hope for you

  • @atfatw

within the last 2 years some of us have grown up. replying to your posts make me as bad as you but i am so much better. you are a sad individual who needs helps. i agree with freedom of speech but you just get kicks out of trying to offend people. you are not worth the time so you can post what you like im not going to play stupid games.

  • @poodlewip PMS skinny girl amusing your misspellings. I take it from your vague and nebulous remark that you will no longer reply to my posts? HOOORAYYY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I can't tell how repellent it is to reply to most abject morons and worthless people who never will amount to anything. again, HOOORAAYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!

  • All anyone needs to do is read your pathetic comments and the responses to them in order to know that no-one here appreciates your presence or values your [lack of] input. You are a very rude and obnoxious little man and I think you ought to go and practice your Zen Buddhism (I still can't piece this together....) somewhere where you won't bother anyone. No-one will miss you here.

  • @Xithinar you english make me laugh you are all soooo pyschotic by nature your entire race is this way stupid, wretched, vile, and dishonorable and really really ugly but you can't see that can you, pathetic loser!

  • @Xithinar oh, boo hoo you lttle english krel!

  • @atfatw

    ok atfatw

this all started because you were slagging off Maddy.

what in the world has she done to you to make direct all your venom at her

apart from have a world wide music career spanning 40yrs.

i am genuinely intersted in why you hate her so much

  • @poodlewip

Well, she turned me into a NEWT!!!! But i got better.

  • No better place to play it! A county famous for its scabs and bribe takers.

  • Flecky bassist!

  • I just saw SS in Virginia on their 40th anniversary tour in September and they were terrific. Got to meet Maddy and Peter Knight after and that was a treat. Old folk or Rockin folk they still know how to deliver a song to an audience. To all you rhythmic "purists" out there who can't stand a little slap, remember how much Rick Kemp meant to this band as a rhythmic bass player back in the pre-drum days of Steeleye Span.

  • Well I think this is how folk-rock about scab miners SHOULD be sung-what do you want, Whitney Houston ?

  • @atfatw

    you need a personality transplant!

  • @atfatw

    dude.......get a life

if you can come here and say you know maddy and span and say you can do...no wait have done better then we will listen but from what you have posted you cant come close so stop talking out of your hope and give the hurtful comments a rest. there you got a reaction and probably a reation you wanted but you will not win this argument

  • Well, I've been a fan since '73 - saw them at Hammersmith in '75 and think this is brilliant! Great playing Rick, as ever (as a pro bassist, I have to say he influenced me considerably in my early days).

With respect, banjometal's missing the point, I think - misguided critics were having a go at the "inappropriate" electric guitar in the early days - let alone the drums in "Now We Are Five". I agree with aussiepaul; they're just taking it on a bit. You can still listen to the original!

  • steeleyes were all about making old tunes relevant. tho i like the original recording, good on em for keeping things fresh.

  • I always loved these guys and Maddy is STILL an angel with a heavenly voice but what's with the funk slap bass? It sounds like the theme from Seinfeld. Please folks. The original arrangement was so wonderful, drums, bass and banjo. Simple but so powerful. Please don't try to get "hip" on us.

  • oh no, its the fake blonde singing if you want to call it that. she is worse here than any of her oldie videos. c'mon Maddy pulllleeeze give it a rest. RETIRE

  • Sad to say not one of their best.....original was much more effective.

  • A great song but a rather boring performance.

I don't know if I'm the only one, but I am really not impressed by Maddy Prior's voice. The is absolutely no match to great female British folk singers like Sandy Denny or Jacqui McShee

  • don't forget shelagh mcdonald.

  • shelagh mcdonald had one of the finest voices in british folk music. she deserves mention alongside sandy denny and jacqui McShee.

  • Maybe it's a good idea to put the year in the title, so I wouldn't have to hear that ugly bass again.

  • dreadfull total rubbish, and by the way death to scabs, in 1884 they were murdered and the methodists held meetings in the feilds during the night to plan their death. shame the same tactics were not used 100 years later,

  • this is awfull compared to the original i'm from seatondelaval and was on strike in 84-85 and this is an insult to our history. in a word ,middle class people should stay away !

  • I`d have to say that at the time I supported the strike as a CPGB member and I didn`t know Steeleye had done this song as at the time I preferred The Clash and The Style Council. I thought that it took some sheer bravery for them to play this song in 1986. I`ve had the nice experience to chat with Maddy Prior since

and see no reason to doubt her good intentions.

  • Smart clever playing but doesn't have the rawness or atmosphere of the original.

  • Really good version! The bass and lead guitar was cool. I know some would not like the bass and guitar but hey, folk music went electric 40 years ago. They can play it any way they see fit :-)

  • This version is rotten. Maybe you've forgotten the original version..

  • people can have ago at me for this. But i could never see them now as to me they brilliant in their time. However i now think they have passed their time, mainly for me when Tim left the band.!!

  • Although your answer was 3 weeks ago ... I saw them live in 1970 (before they were really famous). They were very good then and I would love to see/hear them if they ever got together again.

  • I reckon this painfull in all ways. Way too much soul for a traditional folk song. Some things are best left alone. No disrespect to the group. Just sayin my chirp.

  • I don't see why she should retire. She is still fit, ok, her voice is not the same it used to be, but she can still defend their songs quite well. If it wasn't because they haven't retired yet, I couldn't have the possibility of enjoying one of their concerts or anything, because I am nineteen now.

They're the best folk band ever.

  • As an ex- miner got to say I quite enjoyed it. Maddy still looks fit. A copy should be sent to all scabs.

  • Soo different from the original...

  • It's SEGHILL not Cleghill as Maddy should rightly know ....she sang the correct lyric on an album!

  • the bass is awful..the slapping is ruining the song

  • Makes it for me.

I love the orginal but modern folk has all these elements and more. Why should this song not have "soul" and slap?

  • Excellent band, massive in the early `70s, then undeservedly forgotten by the record companies when Punk came along. Steeleye deserve to be massive again !

  • Peter Knight gets better every time he plays. And he started good!

  • awesome!
