  • what is a elk hound?

a hunting dog, similar to blood hound?

  • norwegian elkhound is an old hunting dog that was bred so it could handle the harsh weather of norway. it has a double layered coat so it can live in cold weather. it's a big and strong dog, and you should'nt have one in an apartment or a block. i'ts a really demanding and time consuming dog, so you must have some dog excperience.

  • It's a spitz-type hound dog bred by the vikings to hunt elk (hence the name) and bears.

  • not to hunt elk but moose. elk is a american deer!

  • uhm no its not. elk and moose is the same thing.

    not deer, sorry.

  • are u stupid or somthing try to type in elk hunt and you will see. but u are right in one way they are called elk in europe thoug.

The elk, or wapiti (Cervus canadensis), is one of the largest species of deer in the world and one of the largest mammals in North America and eastern Asia. In the deer family (Cervidae), sambar deer) can rival the C. canadensis elk in size. Elk are almost identical to red deer found in Europe,

  • I believe the Norwegian word for moose is "elg" (?)

And bob...yeah. Elk and moose are not the same thing.

  • @Galacticmaster it is a hunting dog, Its classified as a scent hound since it has the same nasal sensitivity, The difference is that elkkies will actually chase down and herd the prey animal closer in range for the hunter to kill,They are also good for shepherding and police work.

  • not quite...

  • Reminds me of the time my elkhound chased a bear right to me, and I wasn't even hunting.. The bear had a look on his face as if trying to tell me "get that damn thing away from me". I still smile about that to this day..
