Lao, Thai, Khmer, cambodian and Burmese languages all developed from Pali. That's why they sound similar.

Khmer is conprised mostly of Mon, Sanskrit and Pali. over the years, Thai words have crept into everyday language like "noy" as in "min noy" and "yit" like "jap yit"
