  • PART 1 @cwshere1 "she's popping her jaws.. those bears are pretty big,.. pretty big boar but he would be NO MATCH against 'BART THE BEAR...the largest Kodiak Ive yet"

    ...to see ?

Anyway, these are grizzlies, Bart was a kodiak which are generally larger (even than Katmai grizzlies - among the largest populations). I do agree...Bart is by far the largest kodiak I have ever seen as well, a big boy indeed. HOWEVER, he was captive from a young cub, CONTINUED

  • PART 2 @cwshere1

and always had access to ample food, this contributed to his large size and he was obese as an adult, this made him appear larger than his frame size actually was (as with obese humans). Polars are larger still than kodiaks and I have seen a few larger than Bart.

  • @nordhorny wow.. you have seen larger(Kodiak or Polars) than Bart?? omg.. though i find it hard to believe that polar bears are larger they just don't seem like it. wow..this is really interesting... it would be wonderful to see a Kodiak just as large as Bart in the wild..but also scary, often, when these big huge Kodiaks are spotted so Ive read and have seen on numerous documentaries, someone(man) ALWAYS wants to take him down as a trophy..so VERY sad.. i hate it...

  • PART 1

@cwshere1 Hi. I am a Zoologist (PhD) and have studied felidae and ursidae specifically, including an 18 month field study based in Churhill, Canada. As I mentioned already, Bart is a VERY large kodiak - one of the largest you are ever likely to see in the wild or captivity. It must be mentioned (again) that as he was raised from a cub, he likely turned out larger than he otherwise would have done in the wild given the constantly ample food supply. CONTINUED

  • PART 2 @cwshere1

Also he was very obese as an adult, particularly leading up to his death. Polars are larger than kodiaks on average but Bart was a huge kodiak and so not many polars are larger than him. I have seen a few and have a photo of one at least 1800 lbs. There is a large male here on youtube (by framesize although he is not carrying much weight) that would likely weigh more than Bart if he was carrying the same amount of additional bulk.

  • @nordhorny do you have any books or publications out on your studies??

  • @cwshere1 No books. The only published literature is my dissertation, but that is only an internal work and not widely circulated.

  • why did the cub turn on its mom like that>> 0:16 ?? seems he was saying, "Dont just stand there mom"..
