Katherine clearly shows what a disturbed, vengenful and dangerous person she was in this scene. She tried to murder Bobby twice. Still, the Ewings basically let her disappear without any effort to track her down or at least keep tabs on her. Bobby essentially brushes her off saying he's sure she won't come back. How can you run a $2 billion company and still be that stupid? Of course, Katherine returns without resistance to finally murder Bobby (3rd time's a charm!), but Pam wakes & it's gone.
If Katherine hadn't shot Bobby, then Sue Ellen might have shot and possibly killed JR. JR had just leveraged Sue Ellen into moving back into his bedroom, and she hid a gun under her pillow. As he was initiating sex, she reached for the gun until the phone rang to inform them that Bobby had been shot. Whether Sue Ellen actually would have pulled the trigger is open to debate.
In Katherine's flashback, she was seen firing the gun without wearing gloves. In the previous episodes she tried to frame Cliff by leaving the gun in his condo. When the cops recovered it, surely they would have dusted for prints and found hers.
As much as I still worship JR, Hagman's acting in this scene is terrible, especiallt the " . . . and how did you know Bobby was alone" line. Ironically, it reminds me of Linda Gray's dreadful voice over of Kristen shooting JR. On the other hand, Morgan B. is great in this scene, particulary considering the corn-ball dialogue. She always did an excellent job whether she was playing crazy, scheming, or fake concern.
Yeah, MB was great even when she had to deliver those over-the-top lines, like when she came to see Pam in the hospital. The way they handled VP's exit was ridiculous and Katherine's return was meaningless (they should have had Katherine kill or kidnap Pam in the previous season finale) but MB managed to keep her part as reasonable as possible.
@MrsBobbyJamesEwing Katherine was a fun villainess. I wish they kept her around more. With all her money, she was dangerous without having to be a criminal,
I think Hagman is trying to make JR as stunned as possible. In typical form, JR created this by aiding Katherine in the first place and he's got to play dumbfounded character. Hey its the the first time they dumbed down JR to make storyplots work. They did it millions of times after Season 10.
i just watched the finale for season 7 on dvd a minute ago but i just couldn't wait so i'm totally ruining it for myself but i can't help it!!! this is identical to season 3/4. it was the jilted lover. but it would have been so awesome if it had been Vaughn Leeland.
According to some sources regarding this shooting, they also had Sue Ellen and Holl Harwood also be the suspects for the shooting. I can't anyone but this one taking three shots at him though!
When you look at it Katherine she had the spoiled brat syndrome like Melissa from Falcon Crest and she was the first insane bitch on television, paving the way for her predecessor, Kimberly Shaw from Melrose Place.

Oh man, I think that crazy broad is Janice Lester, the woman who switched bodies with Captain Kirk and tried to take over the Enterprise.

Katherine was one sick and very twisted woman. Morgan Britney played her brillantly.

I have very rarely seen so beautiful eyes
that Morgan Brittany has. But her perverse
nature is IMO less judged than the one of J. R. ´s.

fgeorge76, I LOVE this scene. I agree with you that the writers dumbed JR down in this scene.
