  • whats the name of this song with a lot of delay and this cool chords? sound like pink floyd.... not sure on this...

  • @kwaker400 run like hell

  • Hi there, thanks for this review!!!! just a question, what kind of distortion would u recommend me with a Roland jc-120? This pedal sounds really good but my amp doesnt like them! lol Thanks

  • @zaratustra007

Do I understand that correctly: You have tried the HT with your JC120 and it Sounds strange? what's the problem?

  • @zaratustra007 sorry, my english is too bad. didnt tried ht with jc 120. I was trying to say: i tried many pedals (heavy metal & DS1 boss and TS) and didnt get a good sound.

  • ( I do not speak English ). I want to know the sequence you have used in the video, starting from the guitar until the final sound (guitar - blackstar hd - ..................... .... pc?)

    Great review!

  • @ciberguitar

did you watch the video at all? : (

Well: guitar - Blackstar - TC G-Major - Mac. No amp. Emulated out

  • hey @ThomasSchuber, what guitar are you use?? excellent demo my friend ;)

  • Hi there. Could you remember the settings you had at 4:54? If you can could you post them please?. And also, were the Volumes up at full on your guitar for most of collection of video clips? Thanks

  • @jasfiona

    Sorry, didn't write them down.

    Volume always full up.

  • Very nice review, thanks. Can I ask - did you not suffer from an excessive amount of noise from the single coils when pushing up the gain? I bought the pedal and tried recording using my strat from emulated out but the noise was just unbearable as soon as any heavy gain was used. Your signal sounds so clean.

  • @chirpybee

I use Fender Noiseless Singlecoils... that's why

  • @ThomasSchuber I can't believe the difference that seems to have made - my strat has good pickups and is shielded well but the noise is so bad it comes through any time you are not hittng the strings hard. And that includes using a Smart Gate. Humbuckers - not a problem. Recording direct really works well with them. Worth emphasising your point that the output signal seems very low and needs a bit of help!

  • Kann man damit Richtung Mesa Rectifier kommen?

  • you look like Devin Townsend...

  • @dirtyhappiness

    i actually look like Milow ( milow(dot)com/pictures ) : )

  • are you from finland???

  • @sayumyum

?? what makes you think that?

  • @ThomasSchuber your accent.

  • You are my favorite reviewer. I'd like to see you do the Eventide Space.

  • @ThomasSchuber Awesome demo man, I have this pedal but im getting quite a bit of noise from channel 2. Do you have the same problem? Are you using a Noise Suppressor?

  • whats the song at 6:58? great demo! thanks

  • Haha, dass die Bezeichnungen USA und GB irgendwie verdreht sind, ist mir auch gleich als allererstes aufgefallen :D trotzdem ein klasse Treter, mittlerweile meine Hauptzerre für... eigentlich alles.

  • Moby? Nice video.

  • Comment removed

  • Best tone I liked at 2:22 !

  • where did you bought this strat???sounds awesome!!

  • What type of amp are you plugged into to record this? Sounds great!!

  • @polaris20

    watch again at 8:12 ...

  • @ThomasSchuber Thanks Thomas! I didn't get to watch that part at first, due to entering Buffer Hell on my iPhone. Quite impressive that that's all through the direct out.

  • Which model Hamer is that? Is it custom? Nice axe!

  • Top job. great playing also.I'd like to see you demo a Empress multidrive.

  • @JTM45stratman

Yeah, I'd really like to do this! All you have to do is: Tell Emprss to send me one. : )

    (please do...)

  • impressive review i have to get one now

  • Hi Thomas,

Just thought I’d let you know that I really enjoyed your review of the Blackstar HT Dual valve distortion pedal so much, you have convinced me to buy one. Really love your “noodling around” during the preview. Just shows what a versatile guitarist you really are. Sorry I missed voting for you. I would have given you a thousand “clicks”. All the best, keep on rocking and thanks again for a great review.

    KC

  • @HiremKcoop

    well, Thank you, KC

    Stay tuned: )

  • 6:41

hey man, can you tell me the name of this riff? sounds quite good, thanks ;)

  • Terrific playing! What a variety of great tones in that little box. Thinking about getting one. How do you think it would match up with my Marshall JVM 205? Love the crunch on the amp with my Fenders but gets woofy and I don't know, too middy? with my Gibsons when I try to drive it.

  • Devin Townsend?

  • @KonkreteXXX

    not quite

  • @ThomasSchuber aber ziemlich nah dran zhaha xDD

  • Hello, @ 4:21 you get a real good sound. Could you please help me and give me the set-up ?

  • @The2rule

sorry, can't remember. but in this lick I did some very intense pick scraping/squeeling (I use stone Picks!).

  • I'm can only afford one pedal for soaring lead work. What do you think...the Blackstar or the Boss metal zone...or what is the best distortion pedal for great tone and sustain leads. I am going to put in front of my fender vintage amp. Thanks!

  • @novanine9

Sorry, I can't really give advice for that (there's slightly more than just two pedals fitting your description).

I'd go for something with not too much bass, because of your Fender amp (get's flabby bass when drive too hard). that would rule out the Blackstar I'm afraid

  • @ThomasSchuber - Thanks! That is, most, useful in my considerations. I understand now why...most touring acts like John Mayor will utilize several amps at the same time onstage to capture their sound. If I had the funds: Fender vintage for the high end sophistication / black star or Marshall for bottom crunch / Carvin MTS for the fat bottom end.

  • yoo nice demo

so theres a tube in it , you don't have to replace them???

    tnaks

  • pretty nice demo, Thomas! I think it's not a pure "straight to the board" as you have a pre-amp on the middle of the gear set. So,as I read bottom you have HT Dual -> Preamp SPL -> Audio Interface (with TC Electronics on the loop) -> Computer, right? Do you think it really matters if you have/if you don't have a pre-amp on your gear? What do you it's better - pre-amp and then HT Dual or HT Dual and then a pre-amp?

  • @joaolopespt

The Preamp is my HQ-Frontend. It's just bringind it to Line level. I would esp- for cleans always use a Preamp because the output of this thing is very low. So Preamp in front of Pedal makes no sense here

  • Some of those licks sound awesome dude! Keep playing :D

  • Nice demo, very versatile, I have ordered one to replace my VOX saturator which I am not happy with.......................

  • wow hear that tone at 3:03? thats what I'm talking about!

  • Comment removed

  • wow i like hammer

  • i was looking at the pedal and i dont see no Delay on the pedal it self so can i ask if you had it hooked up to any pedal what other pedal you were using with the Blackstar HT duel? and if it does have a delay can you tell me how to use it

  • @allemonjoy

Nooo, the delay is my G-Major FX. Just like in all my other vids.

  • @ThomasSchuber can you tell me more about that emulated out port?

like what exactly it does, where to use it etc..?

  • @jjvanloggerenberg

Well, it's supposed to give you an amplike sound while being plugged into a mixer or Keyboard amp or computer. quite a lot of manufacturers offer these outputs, but this one seems to work : )

  • Great review, really showed off the versatility of the pedal.

I just got myself one of these beasts, I run it through a fender twin using a prs standard 24 and it sounds absolutely amazing! Exactly the sound I'm looking for, its so powerful. However, I definitely agree with you about the nobs, they're impossible to see. Also, there is a slight delay when changing between od1 and od2, has anyone else found this or is my pedal defective? Despite these drawbacks I still love it!

  • @Badboy6 No - there is a bit of a lag on my pedal, too, at times. Not an issue for me - I am mainly recording with it and not too concerned. Agreed about the knobs - especially the stacked pair. I have put dayglo spots on the little "markers" but still struggle to see the settings - even when it's not dark. What compounds it a little is that a small amount of change at certain points makes a big difference to the tone. Still like the pedal, though!

  • great review I really enjoyed it!

  • Thanks a lot for the review. I like that gittar!

  • excellent video my friend!

  • one of the best reviewing style i've ever seen.

    funny....constructively sarcastic....pro n con nailed in so well....so honestly !

i could almost feel like holding that pedal and playing it myself throughout the video. great a/v capture !!!!

    Mr.ThomasShuber rocks.

  • dude, that is a great review. I own the ht model and its sick.

  • Comment removed

  • You tone sounds amazing. You covered a wide range of music.

  • I don't think anyone has asked this.....what pickups are in the guitar? I think they sound great with this pedal. Thanks..great review and playing!

  • @MattJ1971

These are 8 year old Fender Noiseless. Not the Samarium(?)-Version...

  • Yeah I agree about the knobs, I've painted black lines on mine!!

  • Hey Thomas, great demo I have a silly question. Have you (or anyone) tried this pedal with a Bass guitar?

  • @philouston

    errr... no, sorry

  • Thomas...not a Gibson, a Tokai...they blow Gibsons.

  • Thanks for the "Run like Hell"...long live the Floyd and Gilmour.

  • thomas, now all you need is a Les Paul and you'll really have great tone. ;)

  • @CrazyDiamond1968

Nope. can't handle Lespauls. And I don't like Gibsons business behavior. No need to support that. sorry...

  • @ThomasSchuber Same here! that's why I got a tokai :D

  • @ThomasSchuber at least use humbucker, because i've tried it before and it sounds quite metal already. chunky as hell. so maybe ou can demo both humbucker and single coil

  • Sounds better than any Crunch channel I've heard on a tube amp...this things destroys the idea of a 2 channel amp.

  • you'll hate me for this but what's the name of the one at 5:49 again?

  • you'll hate me for this but what's the name of the one at 5:49 again?

  • @renanthonylao

No hate, just an exhausted ohMyGod: Back in Black (AC/DC)

  • best demo,well done!

  • Do you use tha blackstar ht dual in front of amp or in s/r? sorry for my bad english :-)

  • @Secondheartbeat5

As mentioned: no amp at all. right into the computer.

  • @ThomasSchuber

    thanks for the answer :-)

  • what are the other effects in the 6:14 riff?

  • @ArthursChannel

thats a classic Chorus and a very slow pingpong delay and a reverb.

All from the TC Electronic G-Major.

Right after that you hear just the chorus btw.

  • Hi!!! Is it normal that the emulated output sounds way lower than the normal output, connected to an amp? Thanks!!!

  • Yes. Annoying and normal.

  • sweet tones

  • what song starts at 6:41 ?

  • Again....

    Pink Floyds Run like hell

  • Great demo. Thanks.

  • In my quest to build the ultimate user friendly pedalboard I have purchased this gadget, it is simple to use and strangely I do like the emulated sound to the PA. I use the GT10 for switching, delays, reverbs and chorus thru an all valve amp, my floor board looks like the cocpit of a Boeing 747. This pedal replaces all my COSM preamps. GT10 is good for noise reduction too. No much thing as a simple board, I suppose individual stomps will not sound any better, all them connectors & power supplies

  • A Link to a picture would be very appreciated i guess.

  • Good video - you made my mind up - I'm buying one. Thanks.

  • nice demo !

  • I bought one the other day, it is the Distortion sound I have been looking for, for 25 years, it is awesome!

  • Good demo

  • How's the shared EQ to you? When going from e.g. the clean to the distorted mode do you wish it had designated EQs for each channel?

  • that would be helpful as long as it's not done with these stacked potis.

  • I get what you mean. I read some reviews at HC where the reviewers has it in for the stacked pots, saying the knobs friction against oneanother and will change the setting of the other channel. Man, had the Drive and Boost had EQ and Level I may have gone with one each of those... Keep on making these great educating and humourous flix!

  • how does this sound with pedals? will it like my wah?

  • Hi, i just ordered a Laney Lionheart with a cabinet running Celestion Seventy 80's. I need a versitile distortion pedal thats able to go from just sparkly sound to black metal tones and my question is: Is this the right pedal?

  • Dunno the amp... I guess it does sparkly clean all by itself.

for Black metal I'd look for something else. I'd say it's too smooth (the metallica bit I played is as far as it goes)

If you want clean, use the amp, for Metal use a pedal.

If you wan't something that covers the whole inbetween range....

pffffft, I'd go for multiple pedals.

  • Hehe, i know as far as what metallica uses, and i ment like sparkly distorted sound :) But i think i will go for this one anyways, and berhaps another pedal for the heavier distortion. THanks mate.

  • I also use Dimarzio Evolution pickups, "Smooother" distortion from them than from your singlecoils :)

  • wow.....really a tube amp in a pedal!

i think that is the best sounding pedal i've ever heard.....or is it because of your asskickin' playing? xD

  • it's the playing. of course...

  • That's so big. They should have doubled knobbed the eq section. They worked for Marshall, they knob which whay the ISF knob goes ;)

  • I own this pedal. I have a strat with Dimarzio virtual vintage. The blackstar sounds like HEAVEN through a tube amp!

  • i'm playing it through g&l legacy (usa), peavey classic 30.

i dont know what it is, but mine doesn't sound like hmmmm.. screaming?

could that be cause i'm playing the amp at at volume 2 out of 12?

it's way too fcuking loud when played over 4...

    help!

    thank you. =]

  • while it's impossible to say from miles away:

    get rid of Bass (Amp)

rather turn up Amp and pedal down (volume)

    Mids up.

and tell me what you mean by Screaming, cause there a millions of interpretations.

Or: Post a Clip here as ANSWER. Show what you get, people will help. sort of a YouTube thing folks forget about...

  • thank you )

  • crank that treble a bit!

  • no..

  • well ok. i meant - can it get gritty voxish sound?

probably the sound is a bit dark and smooth since no amp was used

  • I don't think it's dark. Bass heavy maybe.

Hmm If you're looking for Beatles/Byrds chimey chords: look somewhere else. I think these sounds are hardest to get.

    No StreetsHaveNoName here, I'm afraid.

  • Not really - I mean Queen or Rory Gallagher tones to be precise. OK, you played Queen a bit, but it did sound too modern to my ears.

  • Ok, that style..

I play and like Queen quite a lot. Nope. Not in there.

  • I was about to ask about the direct recording capabilities when I decided to jump to the "surprise" at the end, haha. I think it sounds really nice. What did you use for reverb?

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this.

  • What video camera are you using? Nice quality :)

  • That's an HV20 with a wide angle adapter

  • nice Hamer! :)

  • Hi, thanks for the review, great job! I have got a question: is the blackstar ht dual digital or analogic? thank you very much!!

  • Totally analog. Theres a tube in there, some blackstar pedals I think also have an extra diode for distortion. Diodes are also analog, but just solid state, not a tube. The EQ is also analog. The 'special' ISF knob just changes the frequency that the 'middle' EQ controls, nothing fancy or digital there.

  • @JDarkooJDarkoo Thank you very much for the answer :D

  • @zoomG9user You're welcome.

  • whats the reverb you used with this pedal. Iloved it. Thanks

  • I like this pedal alot :) I compard it to a Cral Martin the other day and must say the Blackstar had the edge! better in the lows and is more quiet! not much buzz at all

  • could you compare channel 1 with a Fulltone Fulldrive2 or a tubescreamer?

  • Sorry, I don't have any of those at hand.

  • Completely agree about the ISF. This is what makes defining tone impossible. So many people disagree about the American vs. British tone.

  • NICE VIDEO !!! 5* compliments and great playing !!!just a question...would this work well on a vox ad50t valvetronix ?thamk you

  • hmm. with all the options both have, i guess that would be more than enough rope to hang yourself with.

I will work to some degree, but why?

  • Hi ! thank you for answering..but..what did you intended?I didn't understand..maybe is my bad english's fault..anyway if maybe you want to know why did I ask it is because the vox ad50vt is my amplification and I'm not satisfied of digital pedal's sound like boss ds1 and I' m asking if you had plugged it in one of these before..

    regards

  • I have not tried the combination.

But I have played the valvetronics, you can get very close to the blackstars sound with amp alone.

and the dual is more like a preamp. If you are unhappy with the pedal emulations, get the real stompboxes.

maybe some Boss (DS-1, Metalzone) and a Rat...

is that what you think of?

  • no, I have an epiphone les paul standard and an ad 50 I had a boss ds1, when everything is plugged in the amp set the tweed mode, and the sound I reached was so crappy and muddy ...unlistenable ! so I just sold the ds 1 immediatly...

if used the 80's setting I set the gain at 12 o'clock, bass 11, mid 3,treble 2 and I have a simple distortion but no sustain on solo, if I try to raise up the gain the sound goes so bad, so I didn't reach even remotely the sound of your blackstar or of a tonebone

  • im looking for a verry good metal distortion. is Boss metal core good?

  • never seen or played.

Metal is an unknown area to me.

I would not recommend anything for a style I have no Idea about.

    sorry

  • 6:42 . . . . whats that song?

    nice demo! thanks!

  • Run like hell (pink floyd).

You're not the first to ask btw.

Maybe I should include this to my setlist....

  • sounds really good..how do you rate this pedal like 10/10 in your opinion? tnxx.

  • Id say 8/10.

9/10 with better dials (readability, stacked Volumes... uaarrrg)

10/10 with NO TUBE (size, weight, Power consumption, Battery)

    11/10 with higher output levels

  • Hey, Thomas, great presentation!

A question about the pedal: Can it be connected direct to a poweramp?

  • Yes it can be used as a preamp for both guitar and PA power amps (depending on your chosen output).

The Out put is rather weak! use a Poweramp with something like an Input stage...

  • LOL ! Excellent presentation ;0) 5*****

  • very nice sound! which other pedal can u compare to ht dual? cheers

  • Well, mostly all other Blackstar pedals.

I'm yet to meet something similar, talking about straight-to-board! My V-Stack works just as well, but sounds completly different. just check my video...

  • well, the same chords..

  • Hey Thomas!.. first.. congrats!!.. love your playing.

I was wondering.. have you ever tried a mesa boogie v-twin?...

would you recommend this pedals (with the valves) over the typical distortion pedals??.. I ask because thgere's a huge difference in the cost ...

Thanks!!.. looking forward for your comments!!

  • I would not see it as a distortion box. it's a Preamp,

I think I have tried the Mesa v-twin and didn't really care.

    CU

  • What are you using to get that double-tracked sound around 6:30? Just a specific kind of chorus, or...? Sounds good - as does basically everything else in this demo:) Kudos!

  • thats just the TC Chorus. the double track impression comes from its predelay

  • Gotcha' - well, sounds good!

  • Love the stuff you play at 2:21 at max gain on clean cannel and when you go over to the crunch =) Can you send tabs or something? would be nice =)

Great Review by the way =D

  • Well, glad you like it!

but I think what I play there is the infamous E-Major song called "Aimlessly noodling hendrix chords.

    so on tabs here.

But you might want to check out my Song Among Trees" on Miles, that's pretty close....

    ITunes: Llevelynn

  • Shine On at 6:oo! Haha! I know my Floyd! Great demo, by the way. I think I'm sold on this one. Checked out the Seymour Duncan version, way too metal-friendly for me. Thank you.

  • mother bollocks! what a great pedal

  • Nice playing, mate. I was thinking of getting one of these. Are you playing through a solid-state amp?

  • Nnnnnnoooo.

straight to the board (Direct Recording here)

  • Thank you, good sir! Cheers!

  • Awesome demo Thomas.

  • Sounds great. I like your reviews

  • Very nice demo...sounds impressive...btw what 2 songs are at 6:29 & 6:41 ? Cheers !!!

  • 6:29 is "It's Late" by Queen. 6:41 is "Run Like Hell" by Pink Floyd.

  • Thanks man...Cheers !!!

  • Sydoncid is right.

Sorry I did not see your Comment...

  • No Probs..Thank you too..keep the amazing demo's coming...just love em..Cheers !!!

  • I think their ISF control reference is the American is intended to simulate the sound of 6L6 tubes, (fender, boogie, etc) and the British for EL34's (marshall, etc)
