I saw this episode a long time ago. Batman is actually sleeping cause of some thing the Riddler did to him. So in his dreams, he can't read because obviously his mind can't make up newspaper publications or whole entire books.
I've noticed that whenever I try to read in my dreams, one of two things happens. Either the print shrinks so that I get eye strain trying to read and wake up or I can read just fine, but it's a random word salad.
Soliders right here, was the Mad Hatter and some weird machine.
