  • So powerful. I just... I NEED THIS ON DVD GOD DAMNIT

  • Benedict pulled a Sherlock face, and unshamefully, I squealed. Ooops, it's not like I'm on a train or anything...

  • Ahhhh, this is one of my favorite books! I can´t believe I missed this! Benedict´s voice is so deep and hollow, perfect for the Creature. I would love to se him in that part!

  • I would kill my firstborn son to get a chance to watch this.

  • @BlackAndWhite9999 No need to kill your firstborn son, it's coming back to the cinemas again this Summer, you can check the National Theatre for info xxx

  • Is there a DVD or online video of the whole play anywhere?

  • that was so cool! so annoyed i missed it, i'm studying Frankenstein at college and everything!

  • ... battle of the Sherlocks?

  • @MH90 this was exactly wht I thought when I heard the news!

  • woah.

  • i am doing this adaptation of Frankenstien at college and i am playing victor and i feel that to be able to of seen this at the theater would of been a great honor to see how Benedict and Jonny played him as it would of helped greatly on developing my role

  • i was on the facebook page a second ago and it is been re-relesed in cinemas duing the summer, keep a look at the NT website, find out what cinema it is showing in you area.

  • why have i only found out about this now???? :'( favorite story and favorite actors :)

  • I wish I was in Britain

  • wish this was still on i'm doing it in english, would be v useful

  • Any know of any way to watch this online?

  • Is there anywhere you can get this from? I'd really love to see it!

  • Benedict, you are awesome! :D

  • Wish someone would post this!

  • @Ashleyls17 For those who haven't been keeping up with the Facebook news.. this has been shelved as of now (date of this comment), sorry. I was actually looking forward to it. I loved this trailer.. I wondered if the written dialogue in this trailer was actually inside the book? It's kind of beautiful.. loved the book too, just haven't read it since I was 11/12 (I'm 27 now). Really wish them luck though. ^_^

  • I was very luck in seeing the production live a couple of times and I took alot of ppl to see the play at the NT even now I talk about it with excitment, best play ive seen all year and BC and JLM deserve all the awards they can get!! Danny Boyle is a genius. I would for it to come back

  • I want to see this so badly! But I live in the US and would love it VERY much if there was a dvd or *coughsclipsonlinetowatchcoughs* ;) lol

  • Best of luck to both Johnny and Benedict tonght at the Evening Standard Theatre Awards! They're both up for Best Actor for Frankenstein and I just hope at least one of them gets it for their incredibly performances. :)

  • I live in bloody Poland and would love to watch it. srsly. they must make it into a dvd so I could buy it!

  • Months after seeing the play, I still get excited watching this.

  • they MUST release it on DVD! otherwise i'm gonna die

  • Oh goodness, I miss this so much. Such a wonderful production. <3

  • The NT’s production of Frankenstein is coming out on DVD in January with a documentary attached! I am freaking out!!

  • @InuKag4eva Are you serious? Is this coming out in January

  • @AnnaBarton10 That's what I've heard. Not sure if it will be for other regions, though. I'm region 1. D: Someone will probably post it online if that's the case.

  • @InuKag4eva Whoa! Where did you hear this wonderful news?! :O

  • I loved watching this and would love to watch it again. Amazing!

  • I live in bloody Germany and couldn't see it, but I'd have loved to! Hope they release it on DVD

  • Hope this comes out on DVD, it was soooo amaaazing!! I loved it! I wanted to see bother of them play the monster but I couldn't =( still awesome though :D loved the train bit!

  • I was fortunate enough to see this production, which was incredible and has stayed with me. Perhaps my favorite scene, though, was the steampunk-esque train sequence. I don't want to spoil it, but it was so bizarre that it, in the course of a minute, it encapsulated what this semi-industrialized world must have felt like to the monster. That song with it was so cool. I wish this play had a soundtrack, but alas, I can't find it anywhere. :( So I'll just have to sign the DVD petition. :P

  • If they do get it to DVD, I hope I can get it for region 1. D: Damn, living in the US!

  • Can't watch this enough times....!

  • Unfortunately, I didn't get to see this at the theater, but I did see a live cinema streaming of it - it was amazing!

  • @EdNortonisMineLol same!! where did you see it?

  • @theweirdwired In Milton Keynes :) What about you?

  • Is there anywhere to find this streamed?

  • When I saw this production, I wept. It shook me to the core.

  • when i first saw this i thought they were 4 different people :O

  • I saw this a few months ago in a "live" broadcast. One of the most memorable, fantastically mounted productions i have ever seen - or imagined! - ever.

  • @531jorel same!!

  • How likely is it they are gonna release a dvd of this? They released dvd's of their plays before but how do they decide of which plays? if they release the popular and successful ones then frankenstein should be one of those which get a dvd, right?

  • @NeeeeverMind Hello. I run the Facebook page mentioned in the second top comment on this video. So far what is known is, according to replies from the National Theatre and asking at the NT bookshop, the DVD may be released at the end of the year, along with Hamlet. Nothing is official yet though, but the signs do look a lot more positive now compared to a few months ago.

  • @NaheemBashir Thanks for the answer! That would be really awesome! I'll keep my fingers crossed! =)

  • omg! i simply HAVE to see this! if they ever bring it out on dvd (which i really really really hope they will) then i will definetly buy it!

  • --rapes replay button--

  • Absolute genius. That's all i can really say.

  • I hate being American.

  • You have no idea how much I want to see this. One of my favorite stories, with two of my favorite actors playing the leads? If I were to see this live, I would die.

  • I literally LOOOOOVE this book and to see such a unique rendition, I would die to see it.

  • @KakeruSoma If you haven't read Paradise Lost, I would beseech you to as soon as possible-if you liked Frankenstein and enjoyed the character of the "Monster", you will love Lucifer and Milton's epic style!

  • I wish this production was still running,Danny Boyle was a genius. Benedict and Jonny performed both roles brilliant.Loved the set, music and lighting. Just a stunning piece of theatreand acting.if it doesnt win awards next year at the Oliviers there is something wrong with the world.

  • @KakeruSoma Creature: I should be Adam. God was proud of Adam. Yet Satan’s the one I sympathize with, for I was cast out like Satan though I did no wrong. And when I see others content and I feel the bile rise in my throat and it tastes like Satan’s bile.

  • @KakeruSoma Creature: “Is this the region, this the soil, the clime,” said then the lost Archangel, “is this the seat that we must change for Heaven? –this mournful gloom for that celestial light?” Frankenstein: That’s Paradise Lost. You’ve read Paradise Lost?

    Creature: I liked it.

Frankenstein: Why? You saw yourself as Adam?

  • oh, i wish i knew about this sooner!!

  • When this play was broadcasted internationally, there was something wrong with the signal, and it got cancelled here in Denmark... argh! I am DYING to see it, I really hope I can buy it on DVD some day!

  • DVD ... plllleeeaaasse! :O

  • I saw the show last friday and it was excelent....it was the same...JLM as the creature and Benedict as Victor...wonderful!!!!they both were brilliant but I liked the msot the female creature...she was amazing!!!

  • I went to see this yesterday, final performance. Queued for 13 hours overnight in freezing wind, no sleep at all but it was definately worth it! The whole performance was absolutely spellbinding, heartwrenching and moving.I saw JLM as the creature and BC as Victor, which was what I wanted. I feel that JLM has such a tender, sensitive and emotional aspect to his acting that is the essence of Shelleys creature, and he didn't let me down. He was absolutely outanding! Met them both after too, brill

  • I was able to see this in the US because of the NT broadcast. Spectacular performances all around. What a pleasure to be able to experience British theatre at its best.

  • How could I have missed this?? Very much seconding the need for DVD.

  • This is the best adapted play I have ever seen. If it doesn't get a dvd release, I WILL kill someone.

  • Search for "Danny Boyle's Frankenstein (Cumberbatch & Miller) DVD Petition" on Facebook, there is a petition to sign and a pre written email to send to the National Theatre! All instructions are on the Facebook page. The petition currently has 1,261 signatures.

  • I was quite fortunate to have seen it twice, a dvd release is something I'd gladly strive for.

  • Jonny <3

  • Can't believe I missed this. I NEED DVD/Bluray copy of this.

  • just saw this at the theatre and was so excited to go. It was a massive let down. It was so unbelievably dull and i think most of the hype is just because its a well known director. It was not scary nor thrilling and the character were hard to get into. =C

  • @MrLogicpro Erm... you must have been asleep. That play kept the whole audience spellbound and at the edge of their seats!

  • If this doesn't come on DVD at some point, someone will NEED Dr. Frankenstein to resurrect them.

  • if it's been shown in the cinema, it must surely be recorded! Saw it on Thursday at the Olivier with JLM as the creature. I would love to have it on DVD! arnellen

  • i when on a tour with skool to there and we saw the set of this play and we also saw danny boyle and he waved at us. awesome

  • Cue goosebumps- :)

  • I saw this yesterday, and it was so amazing. I'd love to see it again <3

  • I LOVE THE MUSIC TOO :D Wish It came out on CD, Or even better the Whole play on DVD, If It went on DVD this Company would,, be very Rich, its a real Blockbuster !

    Love IT !!!! Thanks again

  • @EmilyistheName The CD is available on Itunes. It is composed by Underworld :D

  • @Kati515 Thank you just found it on Itunes, Going to buy it ;D I wish Underworlds - Dawn of Eden was more well known, It was so good I tried huming it as I was coming out of the Theatre, or tried too, LOL :D

  • saw this one today in perth w.a with jonny lee miller as frankenstein. it is brilliant!!!! am seeing the reverse roles next weekend..YES it should be on dvd!!

  • I just saw it today in Bowral - it was the closest cinema (over an hour away) - it was BC as the creature, and JLM as Victor Frankenstein. Just amazing, i absolutely loved it - but hate the idea i will never get to see it ever again - so please release it on dvd, (or someone film it) - i don't care long as i have the chance to see it again one day - BC is one of my all time fav actors, and i've love to see the reverse roles!!!

  • Saw this today....just amazing! Perfect acting and just wow!

  • saw it last night all i wanna do is see it again but they arent showing again up here :( argh!!!!

  • This is such an amazing concept and this little trailer is fascinating to watch. I am in awe.

  • Benedict as the Monster is amazing! The voice he uses and the way he portrays him is absolutely unbelievable! I got his autograph and he's the nicest man I've ever met... I don't think Miller would be as good as Benedict.

  • @MCSLovatoGomez I actually saw it reverse cast and Jonny was MINT as the creature and bens Victor was so arrogant and pompous he just commanded the stage he was hypnotising wish i could see it again in the other roles but i can say that Jonnys creature was awe inspiring beautiful!!!!

  • @MCSLovatoGomez Oh, can I ask how you got his autograph?

  • Saw BOTH performances this past weekend and all I can say is, WHAT THE HELL?? First of all, The National's funding is out of control! Oh we have rotating, multilevel stages la-di-da!

And Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller, COME ON! I've always enjoyed Benedict as an actor but seeing him on stage was truly exceptional. And Johnny, I'd watch him watch paint dry, he is such a spellbinding performer.

If you aren't planning on seeing both shows you are absolutely doing the wrong thing.

  • I'm dying to see JLM Victor/BC Creature. I saw the other but I NEED TO SEE THE SWAP. This is why a DVD is important. I'm freaking out. I am seriously wigging out. I'm freaking out so much that I said "wigging out," which I don't believe has been used for at least a decade.

  • SCREENINGS LIMITED? No, no, my friend, 15 is limited, 2 is insane. You broadcast it, someone must have taped it! Put that on a DVD and. give. it. to. me. Will pay in legal tender.

  • Really reminded me of Pinbacker from one of Boyle's other works, 'Sunshine' I really wish I could see this!

  • saw it with benedict as the creature. holy cow was it AMAZING! i even spoke to some of the people at the movie theater, they are appealing to corporate to try to get the role reversal released. here's hoping, cuz i would definitely go a second time

  • I saw this a couple of weeks ago and it was amazing. I can't believe I forgot how powerful the music was.

From where I'm standing, I prefer Benedict as Victor, although as I haven't seen him as the Creature so I can't really judge. In any case, they were both brilliant on the night I went.

  • @TeaCub He was amazing as the creature.

  • This was amazing at the theatre !

  • but "frankenstein" comes also on telly..?

  • The book owns

  • OMG IT WAS MINDBLOWINGLY AMAZING!!!

  • Someone wanna write the dialoge of the trailer for me? My speakers on my computer have blown and I've only seen the trailer once in theaters. It's been stuck in my mind for a long time, can't wait to see it next week :)

  • So glad I got to see the live broadcast of this. And I'm going to see the reverse cast next week :D

Though I'm a bit wary that I'll start comparing them both, 'cause Jonny was excellent as the Creature and Benedict made an amazing Frankenstein. . .

  • @CloudsValentine I saw them both, and it's almost impossible to compare them. It's very subtley like seeing two different plays, both wonderful. So don't worry! :D

  • Saw this last night in NYC, sooo brilliant! I'm going again on the 31st to see the reverse cast which I'm really excited for, so many people seen to prefer Benedict as Victor and Jonny as the Creature. This is such a wonderful and unique show, I'm really hoping that they're only saying they won't release it on DVD so that they can continue to get people to go to the live shows and broadcasts. Hopefully after it closes, they'll change their minds!

  • Amazing that I got to see this live so many miles away! It wasn't the real thing but it was so damn close, I can't complain. Couldn't go to both screenings but I must say Benedict as the creature was simply heart wrenching. I need the music also! Omg everything about it was so great I just want to watch it all over again!

  • just been to see it, really really really amazing

  • That music.... Oh!

  • The compaign for this on DVD starts here :D

  • @JoLovesSpam If there's no DVD, someone at the National Theater is gonna get brutally murdered. NO MERCY!!!

  • @JoLovesSpam a petition as already been started, but no positive answer for now...

  • @JoLovesSpam Bless you.

  • @JoLovesSpam I most deffinetly have to agree with you :DD.

  • @JoLovesSpam

    ditto

  • anyone knows if "danny boyle's frankenstein" is going on tv..? Or only at cinema and theater?

  • Seeing it today at the cinema, yea I have no idea why they r releasing it on screen but whatever I get to see it XD

  • @LonelyMarshmallow They're not actually releasing it, it's just a live broadcast. It's a great opportunity for people all around the world to see the plays without having to travel to London (it's in theaters in all around Europe! And in America! How amazing is that? The is the 4th play I got to see that way and I am soooo grateful for it). But it's a real shame that they won't be actually making it into a DVD.

  • doppelGANGGER

  • I cannot wait! I'm going to see it in Hollywood on the 31st of March (just found out today that the 24th of March screening was cancelled [anyone know why???] and rescheduled for the 31st, so I quickly bought tix for the 31st, LOL). Gonna see Benedict as Victor & Johnny as Creature, I can just picture each excelling in these rolls (can't really picture Johnny as Victor). Anyways, can't wait! *happy dance* =D

  • @LatinFox See, i thought Miller made a great Frankenstein. I'm so tempted to go back to see him as the Monster, but Cumberpatch was just SO incredible in the role (though I think he'd make a much more scientific Frankenstein, too.)

  • I am begging you to release this on DVD for the US!! Some of us cannot watch it in theaters, and we Americans want to see it too!!

  • Personally, I thought Benedict made a better creature.

  • omg omg omg the music! haha gave me chills! :D

i saw this in the theatre the other day, and oh my god, it was absolutely EPIC. They really should release this on dvd, it was the best play i've ever seen! :D

  • Seeing this in April EVEN THOUGH I LIVE IN AUSTRALIA. :') thank you NT.

  • I am physically incapable of recommending this strongly enough.

  • Just found that there are (at least) 2 petitions going on for the DVD!

    one at petitionspot/dot/com called GetFrankensteinOnDVD

    and getfrankensteinondvdpetition on tumblr

(sorry can't post the links here...)

Maybe we can get this released on DVD after all?

  • @VI2RAG Do you think the NT will listen? I've heard they can be a bit snobbish about DVDs, but I've never heard of anything like this before so to see it lost to the archives would be a bloody tragedy. Plus I actually will be genuinely upset if I don't ever get to watch it again :(

  • @CuddlyTurtle I have no idea. Some comment on this video says that someone wrote them and they said that they can't do it for contractual reasons. Would be a shame though to let this get lost. It sooo needs to be preserved on DVD! Well, one can hope! Maybe if they see that so many people would buy it they change their mind. *fingers crossed*

  • Oh gods, seeing this through live broadcast with Benedict as the creature was just mind-blowing. Quite possibly one of the best plays I've ever seen...there was just so much passion. Half the time I was practically clutching my heart! Oh, what I wouldn't give to see this released on DVD!

  • Watched the live transmission at the cinemas last night and I absolutely loved it! Shows the novel from various perpecitves and certainly many metaphors such as those about Adam and Eve and God... Such a powerful performance! Would definetely reccomend it to anyone! 10/10

  • I saw it yesterday in Oulu in Finland and I loved it! Benedict was amazing as the creature! And the opening scene was just stunning.

  • I'm SO annoyed because I don't have the time or the money that I could go to Helsinki! NT Live -performances are shown mostly in there, not in the middle-Finland. If they release this on DVD I were first in line to buy it!

  • Saw it in Ontario, Canada last night thru the National Theatre Live cinematic program. Tremendous production. Very well-written and well-produced, with incredible performances by Miller and Cumberpatch. I am very tempted to go to the encore presentation to see each actor's take on the reverse character... Great great music!

  • Was lucky enough to see the play at the National yesterday while it was being filmed. JLM and BC were superb. My favourite scene had to be when the 'man' watched the birds flying up from the stage, the sun coming out, and was caught in the rain. It was so emotional. Brilliant.

  • Fun awesome fact - North was the direction people in Medieval England believed to be the location of Hell. With that knowledge, I went head over heels watching The Creature lead Viktor North after establishing earlier that he sympathized with Satan.

Stunning. Absolutely Stunning. I hope this gets released onto DVD with both versions.

  • After much anticipation I watched this at my local cinema tonight with Benedict as the Creature and it was fantastic!

  • Had the privilege of attending this live recording event earlier this evening in London - it was brilliant. And I think I saw Danny in the audience. We gave them all the standing ovation. Truly a must watch and was glad I saw it live.

  • I loved it! have to watch it again for the reversal of roles. ..it was fantastic. The main actors' dialogue and how they interacted was brilliant. stage and music ...speechless. and the silence in between was heavy as deep thought.

  • I travelled hours to see it in a german cinema...unfortunately there are not many cinemas at all in germany showing it and even worse they only show it once, such that you cannot see the effect of the change of actors. But nevertheless, it was absolutely fabulous. Great acting, great sets, very dramatic. Hope they will it release on dvd some day.

  • I loved it, I travelled to Mayo just to see it.

    Well done to all involved

  • Just saw it in Bucharest and am still stunned with how fantastic it was. I can only hope I'll get to see the performance on the 24th as well; it would be so interesting to see Johnny Lee Miller's take on The Creature.

Thank you so much National theatre for a wonderful initiative!

  • AMAZING AMAZING!

  • has just seen it! it is the most extraordinary thing i've ever seen in a theatre! I salute Benedict! His Creature was mind-blowing perfection!!! The play is absolutely brilliant, heart-wrenching, disturbing, shocking and extraordinary! i'm amazed! everything is perfect. i love the dramatic music omg!!!! but benedict... ahh... i'M so in love!

  • I just watch it in Athens Greece in Megaron! It was AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!! Congratulations to the director, to the actors and to the whole production team! BRAVO! Thank you!

  • I just saw it in Stockholm! It was so amazing! Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller were both fantastic in their performences.

Everything was just amazing and breathtaking, the music, the stage, the lightning!

  • Gahhh seeing this tonight! With Benedict as the Creature.

  • It looks like someone has finally got FRANKENSTEIN right!

  • I think Benedict Cumberbatch is a better Victor Frankenstein. Reanimating a corpse is something Sherlock would totally do.

  • I'm so sorry to hear many people are not going to be able to see it-both in the theatre and cinema. If you are in London, I'd suggest lining up for return tickets by 4pm for a 7:30 show. If that is not possible, Underworld is releasing music from the production, or what they call "a postcard, a memento, a short story, a collection of scenes & themes from Frankenstein the play". If you join the Underworld website, it is being released digitally tomorrow. Best of luck to all!

  • Ive seen this 3 times and it is brilliant, Ive seen both actors play both roles, and Ive met both actors after they are both lovely.I prefer Jonny as the creature and Benedict as Victor. Both actors are brilliant in whatever role.I cant wait to get the album the music is amazing.

  • Bought tickets for the NTlive cinema showing here in Christchurch NZ and was really looking forward to it. Then the earthquake hit. Realto Cimema is damaged and closed until further notice. A bit not good.

But my loss is nothing compared to many in this city. So I will be stoic & look forward to other plays in the future. I hope those who do get to see it can tell me what I missed.

  • The creature's birth was a truly first class piece of acting. For those worried they cannot see it, it is streaming live in certain cinemas across the UK over the next few weeks

  • @EdwardWouldNot ... that are ALL sold out. literally EVERYWHERE. and hey are taunting me by advertising it EVERYWHERE.

  • @EdwardWouldNot that beginning part is amazing and a very clever piece of theatre

  • so do they change roles in the same show, or one does one show the other does the other??

and i reeeeeeeally want to see this. any chance itll come online??

  • @jingleheimerschmit They switch roles on alternating days, Benedict as the Creature one day, Johnny the next. Probably wont be available online; everyone is hoping they'll put it out on dvd like they did Hamlet not too long ago, though.

  • Saw this yesterday and it was phenomenal, I was underage and it was quite disturbing so if you are underage don't go and see it. Benedict was the creature. Possibly the best piece of theatre I have seen, the opening is more than words can express the acting is phenomenal from cumber batch and miller but the rest of the cast are cringingly bad, even worse so is the script changing from horror movie scenes and revaluation lines to almost slapstick comedy. Defenitely recommend it but wait until yo

  • Okay... so no DVD?? Let's say I'm not gonna be able to see this because of financial woes... does that honestly mean I'm gonna completely miss ever seeing this?? :[

  • this video is so wickedly freaky. awesome. i do hope it passes it cinemas.

  • Yeah. So your guys are a little more familiar than ours.... Love it though.

  • I am really looking forward to seeing this and I am glad that it is showing sydney.
