As blundering as he was, the Middle East was a relatively new problem in American diplomacy when Carter was president. His advisors were complete hacks as well (sound familiar?) He was not innovative with foreign policy. However, it would have been a difficult time for any president. It's all in hindsight. What matters is blowback. We have an egocentric president who is completely out of touch with reality, and an incompetant Congress who will do nothing about it. That's what really scares me.

I am not condoning anything FDR did in the 30's and 40's with Stalin. I never said I was a Democratic sympathizer, either. Jimmy Carter screwed up stuff in the Middle East, for sure (and the economy with his zero-based budget). I wouldn't call him a mental case, though. Reagan also contributed to that distrust. Iranians are pissed because of military action that the U.S. presidents, Democratic and Republican, have taken for decades. It started in 1952, and it's gotten worse since.

The war against Islamic fundimentalism would be fought against Saudi Arabia and Pakistan. Bush's ties to the Saudi's keep our government from even mentioning them although recent figures show that 1/2 of all the foreign "terrorists" in Iraq are Saudi. Where is the unbiased Dan Rather when needed? Since the known stats are that 80+% of everyone in journalism is a registered Liberal Democrat, where would a neutral news reader be found?
