Genius ! their records are sterling too ! Poor Leonard Sachs. He got into a spot of bother. Hinge was in one of the Steptoe and Son films as a 'queer-in-a-tower-block-cliché' role. Sterling actor! A grrrreat man! Modern life is rubbish! so resist resist resist.!!..and make your own modern life! COME ON !!!!!!!!!
thank u.... so sorry about earlier post... I had no idea Patrick Fyffe had sadly passed away... I still remain surprised that the BBC haven't shown them on the tv for such a long time...
this is racist against white people it makes us look like twits in exactly the same way as the black and white minstrel show does to black peopel but where are the political correctness brigade huh?
I went to school with Dame Hilda (Patrick Fyffe). He was wonderful in our Shakespearean plays--playing the feminine parts, of course. I now produce Britain's OLD THEATRES magazine
I always wanted aunts like hinge and bracket when I was a kid. I still do now as they were brilliant. The episode of Dear ladies where dame hilda gets stuck in the lift is pure TV gold
What we need are a talented British Hinge & Bracket for the 21st century! It would make the TV license fee worthwhile, bring some REAL entertainment into our lives along with some much-needed morale-boosting humour. If Britain has talent, then I'm sure H & B are out there...somewhere..
FANTASTIC! Thanks for posting this clip. This is the sort of thing that we need on today's tv and not the junk they show these days. Very talented people. Thanks again.
Remember this, does anyone remember the parody that Russ Abbott performed with Freddie Starr? Im sure that Someone was "doing" a comic hitler(Freddie Starr pehaps?) 5* thanx. X
Magic... So funny AND such great musicianship! The Leeds City Varieties is an incredible old theatre - I've had the great privelige of playing there several times.
I remember seeing this when first shown in Britain, the singing of 'Land of hope and Glory' is as extraordinary now as it was then, I thought I remembered lots of flags and bunting, perhaps that's just in my imagination! thankyou so much for posting this.
you probally watched last night at the proms at sometime or other thats where you'd have seen all the flags and bunting being waved when the song was played.
Hinge and Bracket used to do "Land of Hope and Glory" at the end of many of their concert and gala performaces, complete with flags, bunting and streamers. Several of these were televised by the BBC in the late 70s / early 80s.
I remember this screening on a Sunday evening in New Zealand - the nesxt day everyone was debating as to whether or not they were men or women - Wonderful talent!
Great glimpse into our classic variety tv show that no longer exists.
What is badly needed is a TV Heaven channel, that would air any type of programme in the 1950s to 1980, as tv bosses today only cater for the yoof of today.

Do you think the gay innuendo was intentional? And how aware would the audience have been of it? Wonderful cultural artefact!
seerauberjohnny 3 years ago
Totally intentional (google for "Hinge and Bracket" to learn "the truth").
And the audience were well aware, hence the laughs.

Even though I'm a dyed-in-the-wool American, "Land of Hope and Glory" gets me just as misty as "God Bless America" does.
