my friend just lend me his dad AE-1 P. it doesn't have a battery, but my concern is the film advance lever of it can't be move to its full position. i've make a research and some says that it locks when the battery is empty or the film is full. what do you think guys? tnx!
I'm just a step ahead of you, really. I bought my camera about a month ago.
What I recommend is that you experiment with cross-processing. Shoot on slide film, and have it developed as if it were negative film. The results are amazing.
That, and if the shutter squeaks (which is an infamous little annoyance indicating the drying of lubricant/degradation of light seals), consider sending your camera to a service center for a general tune-up.
i dont know anything about film slrs so this might sound really stupid but to get the picures from the canon ae 1 u go to like walgreens and get the film developed right? its not like u hook up a usb cable of course. but anyway if u want to get ure images on the omputer u take it to walgreens one hour later uve got the images and then u scan them in? is that right? please help cuz i really like the good dof and quality of the ae 1 and that it so cheap and small,
Yeah, you can scan them yourself, (always scan the negatives, not the prints), or you can get them to scan the pictures at the time they develop them, I know Wal-mart offers scanning services, but I'm not sure about Walgreens. These services are generally low-resolution scans, not suitable for printing larger than 4x6". There are dedicated camera shops and online services that offer high-resolution scans, albeit at a much higher price. It depends what you wanna do with your photos.
@amspiro You have to get the film developed before you can do anything else. It's generally most convenient to have a some other place develop the film rather than trying to do it yourself (B&W print film is the easiest to do yourself, but you still need a light-tight room and some chemicals; other films you cannot do yourself).
Once that's done, you'll have some prints with the film negs (unless you used slide film). It's best to have a special scanner to scan the film negs.
Find a good film development place. I know one in Chicago is Quality Photo Plus, but if you find a specialty place they're usually cheaper and much higher quality.
Do not leave the robot or any cameras cocked for a long period of time. In fact wind just before taking a picture for keeping the springs not under tension.

The AE-1P will not allow any functions to operate (including the lever) when there is no battery. I know this because I own an AE-1P myself.

You can't go wrong with Kodak Gold 200 film.

Thank you. I appreciate it. Have you used an A-1 before? Any advice to a total beginner? I need to replace the battery too.

why do people love the canon Ae-1???
panzarw 3 years ago
Because it's very easy to use, very easy to find, and very cheap.
Orcinus24x5 3 years ago
ummm maybe so, what about the exposure time in the ae1 ???
and i live in Russia so thats a different story, a zenit here costs less then a canon so :(
panzarw 3 years ago
I want a Zenit for my camera collection. :(
exposure time in the AE-1 ranges from 1/1000s - 2s, and Bulb.
Orcinus24x5 3 years ago
haha, if you want a zenit, then you would sertenly want a Fs-122 Photosniper, or a Kiev 4 and a FED,
God damnt it i want a zenit, a fotonsiper, canon ae-1, KIev 4 bhaaaaaaa, and thouse things are rare even here, or too pricy!!!!
