Love my Chill. It came shaving sharp out of the box, although it didn't keep that level of sharpness even after a few slices through paper. A BIG ding I have against mine though is that the relief edge is ground really inconsistently. One side looks noticeably different from the other, and the actual length of the relief is variable through the blade length. Still works great, but it's annoying. I'm not enough of a knife guru to actually know how much it's affecting knife performance if at all.
Another Nutnfancy video that caused me to purchase yet another Kershaw, LOL! Love it! A couple of passes on the DMT extra-fine bench sharpener made it sharp-as-can-be. BTW, I paid $12.99 + S&H from Cabela's (got my orange Skyline at the same time). Keep the videos coming!
Just a quick update to the Kershaw Chill as of DEC 2011. Kersaw has corrected the sharpness issue with the Chill. I bout a few of these when this video was aired and I noticed the same thing you did Nutn. Well it just so happens I wanted to replace my serrated one because of a user error while taking apart the knife. Well I just revived a new one in the mail today and out of box it's hair shaving sharp. Good Job Kershaw!
I love my kershaw chill. Looking at the kershaw lineup I see way more knives I like than knives I don't like, which is rare when compared to most other manufacturers.
Been carrying this knife for months now. It's really great. I've had to tighten up the nut a bit over time. Some micro-chipping, but easily sharpenable.
My friend got a dud in the mail. It squeaked, didn't deploy well at all, and began to look terrible. Haven't had any problems with mine though!
hey, nutn, how would you say this holds up against the crkt g10 drifter? you seemed to give great reviews for both and they're both at around the same price point. i've been debating which one to buy for a while now.
August 1st, 2011, I unboxed a new chill 3410 Plain edge. Sharpness has been addressed and is now reasonably sharp. It took me all of an hour to nick myself. Absolutely no blade play either, happy to see that now. One downside, the flipper is now a little bit tighter and therefore not as quick on the draw. Still, I'm blown away by this knife.
Thanks for posting this and all the other reviews. I was undecided between this and the SOG Flash 1. Based on your review and the pricing (I'm on a tight budget) I'm probably going to go with the Chill.
ive watched your videos for awhile and i think we both have same taste on blade styles for EDC carry i have a kershaw vapor 1 under 4 oz with steel handles ( might be aluminum not sure ) would love to see a review on it as well sometime also under 30 bucks i believe
@shandelear I for one am very glad that he dsn't put thumb studs on his blades, as thumb studs make the blade a "flick blade" and i can not import it, but due to it beening a flipper, customs haveeno issues with it =] KEEP THE FLIPPER or make it a thumb hole but never a thumb stud...
Purchased both the plain and combo-edged version. Both lock up tight but the plain-edged version has a noticeably smoother action. Upon taking them both apart, I noticed a difference in construction: the combo-edged version utilizes six thin bronze washers; three on either side of the blade. The plain-edged version; however, utilizes only three washers; one teflon and two bronze(both of thicker stock than any of the six on the other knife). I've tried contacting Kershaw to no avail.
I just ordered this knife on ebay because I trust your opinion when it comes to gear reviews. I plan on painting the liners, screws, and clip OD green or coyote brown. It won't be duracoat but I hope it will hold up alright. Thanks for the awesome gear reviews that focus on value and also your awesome philosophy videos!!!
Just ordered one of these, seems like a great low-price option. Was going to buy a Spyderco Tenacious but the lower weight made me have a look at this. Will probably buy a Tenacious later. :)
Picked up a plain-edged Chill last week. Complete 180 from the Benchmade I carried previously, and I couldn't be happier with it thus far. The weight, or lack there of, as compared to the Benchmade is the best part. Thanks for all the reviews across the board, they've helped me in my purchases, as well as helping friends in theirs. Keep up the good work.
THE problem I have with Kershaw is their clips are the opposite of lowriders. A LOT of knife (and clip) is visible while carrying it. I don't like to draw attention to my knives.
I wish you showed how high it rides when mounted tip down.
dig the chill. had to splurge for the skyline however, i was sold on the MADE IN AMERICA. dont stop making vids! you are a great help to all us enthusiasts. you have definitely steered me away from some bad purchases. and guided me toward solid ones. just figured you might appreciate the support
@nutnfancy Hey nutn, would you go after a chill or a volt 2? they're pretty close in price, like 17 vs 22 dollars. The volt comes jimped but the chill has g10, so its kind of a push. Better handle on one, jimping on the other?
Why isn't this knife on the "Best Folding Knives Under $40" playlist? The Scamp and OSO Sweet are up there, but this Chill isn't. I know that maybe you dinged the knife for not having a great sharpness and grind out of the box, but mine (and from the comments, many others') have come very sharp and ready to go for EDC. It's a well-built, elegant knife that, in my opinion, should be up there in the playlist.
good review. but i have the plain edge and i want to change it do tip down. BUT i have all Torks and all Allen wrenches and was yours hard to take off?
The Chill is another great EDC and field knife.I keep one razor sharp in the backpack for fine cuts.Mine also came as razor sharp as my Skyline out of the box.
If the Chill turns you on, see also the Volt II,another value EDC/emergency defensive flipper from Kershaw. The Volt II comes complete with gimping on the spine.
It's funny how you say yours wasn't that sharp! They must have heard you cause mine was just as sharp as my skyline or SHARPER out of the box! I kid you not! It made super fine curly shaving paper cuts! This is an excellent knife! Thanks once again for giving us another good EDC choice! Mine has thumb studs...Nice to see they added them! It comes out super fast with the thumbstuds!!

swiss francs with shipping, would you still getting it or is it to pricy for what i get?
I've been carrying this knife daily for a few months now. It is an amazingly good EDC blade for the price. If it didn't say "China" on the blade, I would think it was made in the USA. Super fast and easy deployment, no play at all in the lockup (even without any pivot re-tightening), extremely lightweight and thin, feels great in hand, excellent blade shape for EDC, easily sharpened, no rust spots whatsoever. The flipper/finger guard is outstanding. Thank you RJ Martin!
take any nutnfancy knife review, and see how many times you can apply thats wat she said. ie...some like it tip up, some like the tip down...haha jk love the vids
On the video thumbnail, the knives are lighted such that one of them looks like it has an aluminum or titanium handle. Thumbs up if you'd buy a Chill in SS, Al, or Ti. I would!
@PyroHeiko tough question. i have the drifter in g10 but not the chill (yet). lemme just say the steel is awesome, lightweight, and the fastest non assisted knife ive tried so far. u wouldnt be dissapointed with it believe me.
@sleek555 I agree. The Drifter is one of my best knives. I love it as much as some of my $50-80 knives. It opens SO easily with just the thumb action and no wrist action, and closes one-handed.
Absolutely perfect knife. I got the stainless version.
@PyroHeiko I have both. I was disappointed in the Chill for a few reasons, but I am absolutely in LOVE with the Stainless Steel Drifter. It's incredible..
Just bought one from Big-5 for $19.99 (they also had the Kershaw Beacon frame lock tanto for same price, but Chill seemed a better choice for me)
The differences I noticed are mine has dual thumb stud deployment, and it does not have the stamp "RJ Martin design" like yours does, might be a big5 special edition I don't know but I haven't seen any other thumb stud versions on the 10 or so reviews I've seen on YT
I was watching Barats and Bereta before this (sketch comedy). I guess the Beretta, being a gun, lead me here. Anyways, I was not disappointed for the re-routing. Very interesting video. I feel that I need to keep a utility knife nearby,
I got to handle one of these this weekend at a gun and knife show. If I had the cash left over I would have bought it! lol The booth didn't take cards. The blade is almost too fast as it's very free swinging. I actually cut myself when closing it with one hand. Usually I disengage the lock, move the blade slightly closed and move my fingers to close the knife. Instead of moving slightly, the blade swung all the way around! lol So yeah, super fast blade so be careful! I'mma get me one! lol
i don't have allot of experience with serrations , but when i recieved my double edge kershaw ET and tested the serrated part , i was very very impressed they're so freakin sharp compared to other knive manufacturers , if u love serations go with kershaw for sure !
Nutn, do you know if kershaw has any knives with their serration for the full blade? I cut a lot of rope in my daily life, and i haven't found anything better for it than the kershaw serrations.
just a word of advice....dont test blade wiggle with palm under edge. i had a bad experience with a cold steel AK47 doing that. now i always grab the blade spine to test wiggle....
Have you ever evaluated Remington folders? Have a US made & a Taiwan design that I found for $10.00. And I like them and am impressed with the cutting & edge retention. Really enjoy your vids. Oh on the jimping; a thread file has different spacing for the threads (jimps). Establish a notch with the thread file or dremel tool & then use the thread file to establish even & professional looking jimping.

I bought my chill about a year ago and thought to myself "Why has Nutnfancy done a review on this knife? It seems right up his alley!" I love it! Super light, super fast!
i was looking into buying one of these but after shipping there 20 or 30 bucks i was wondering if any of you guys know where to get this knife for 16 or less i know its worth a little more but who doesn't love a sweat deal
Great vid nutn...I just ordered this knife and was told it is shipped on its way to me..cant wat til its in my pocket cant beat 16 bucks. Its gonna replace my CKRT rollock as my edc
@nutnfancy thank god for you nutn i have been watching your vids since 2008 i am addicted to knives thanks to you my dog is still alive he got into a chair and it fell on him his collar was stuck and he could not breathe my first thought was a kitchen knife, too braud then i remembered my brand new kershaw chill wipped it out and cut it like butter thank you very much you are appreciated by all keep doin what your doin i appreciate comind home and jumpin on youtube and watching your vids thanks
I like these cheap knives. I carry my Emerson CQC-15 daily but it's for the most part reserved for self defense. With these cheapies, I don't mind using them as a tool.
As a voiceover pro, I can attest that you have a fine speaking voice & consistently interesting delivery. My 1 bone to pick, is to stop identifying knives with the words, "overseas manufacture". That's a circuitous way to say "Made in China". As a military man, you know how to "call a spade, a spade". China has sold the U.S. poisonous toys & destroyed hundreds of homes w/ its toxic sheetrock, so it’s wise to arm the consumer w/ info about the country of origin, and let us decide, fully informed.
@MATAtheFIRST , get a Skyline. Better quality, made in the USA and date coded with the month it was made. Take pride in yer tools, dude. You don't even have to spend a mint, just a li'l bit more and you know an American made it which helps him & our economy. I bought a Skyline the week I saw Nutn's review. I carry it daily. As a final incentive, the price has come down since his review so you can't go wrong! Approx$30 on Amazon delivered or $29 at yourcornerstore
Just got mine in the mail from yourcornerstore. Went for the combo edge. All I needed to do was place the clip on the opposite end and slip it in my pocket. Lockup is extremely solid, and the blade came very sharp.
Hey Nutn, I can confirm your points. Decent EDC knife. Except for the sharpness out of the box, for me it was the other way round. The Skyline wasnt very sharp but the Chill was. Btw. I got it from fellow YouTuber Zenmagine as a give away (watch his competition shooting vids, he is fast and skilled). Keep up the good work! Cheers!
I don't dig the "china" but I have EDC'd a Kershaw "china" knife and it served its purpose really well. though after seeing this I'm going with a Kershaw Skyline ASAP.
Nutn, great review as always. Got me thnking about the Chill, which I never stopped to look at before. I know you dig kershaw, so what's your opinion of the Shallot? I'm really digging the black serrated one...just need to wait for some spare cash in the budget. Wish you would review it.
Thanks for the great review (as usual), I've decided to add a Chill to my collection...I'm going to roll it into my EDC rotation. Keep up the fantastic work.
you should get an edge sport by smith's kinda like sharpmaker but i think it works better for a $22 system its outstanding get it and review it please!!! if it helps you do the best reviews
@YourSelfDefenseShop I disagree. Kershaw USA makes very good quality knives. I don't like all of their designs, but for the money I think they kick Benchmade's a**. I have had to send back more brand new BM knives than I ever have with Kershaw. Plus Kershaw's warrent department is way better than BM's.
I think Kershaw has crap quality, the display models of kershaws at the knife shops I been in really show how bad they "age" plus the speed of deployment on their assisted knives aren't fast.
but I would buy kershaw any day over Bench made even if BM has superior quality.
@pitbullhinson Kershaw has some cool knives (I.E. Ram, Tyrade,). I was specifically commenting on the Kershaw Chill. Take a look at Kershaw's newest designs and it is obvious that their quality is going downhill. Ever since they parted ways with Ken Onion, I haven't seen one design that was exciting.
In regards to which knives I like. Spyderco, Benchmade, Cold Steel, SOG, and even CRKT are companies that are showing more promise for me than Kershaw is at this point.
Yup, Kershaw is probably my favorite overall brand, due mostly to bang for the buck. And I love the frame lock and SpeedSafe opening features specifically.
Hey have you ever thought about getting Veri on to a nutn gag reel? Just thinkin'. Not that she doesn't have anything else to do or anything...
Like the Kershaw clip better than the SOG Flash 1. SOG does bury deep in the pocket, but the Kershaw grips much tighter. SOG seems kind of loose to me.
Is there a video that explains the various steels and their properties? Or a website that lays out their properties on a chart or something? If not, nutnfancy, you ought to make one!
Mr.Fancy you said your opinion doesn't count for crap but to me your opinion is great thats why i watch your videos because you know hat your talking about

On the video thumbnail, the knives are lighted such that one of them looks like it has an aluminum or titanium handle. Thumbs up if you'd buy a Chill in SS, Al, or Ti. I would!
TheLateBoyScout 1 year ago
if you would have to choice between the crkt drifter and the chill, which one would you pick?
PyroHeiko 1 year ago
@PyroHeiko tough question. i have the drifter in g10 but not the chill (yet). lemme just say the steel is awesome, lightweight, and the fastest non assisted knife ive tried so far. u wouldnt be dissapointed with it believe me.
sleek555 1 year ago
@sleek555 thanks
PyroHeiko 1 year ago
@sleek555 I agree. The Drifter is one of my best knives. I love it as much as some of my $50-80 knives. It opens SO easily with just the thumb action and no wrist action, and closes one-handed.
Absolutely perfect knife. I got the stainless version.
Supermassively 1 year ago
@PyroHeiko I have both. I was disappointed in the Chill for a few reasons, but I am absolutely in LOVE with the Stainless Steel Drifter. It's incredible..

Hey Viking! Just picked mine up from big 5 also! I'm diggin it. Really light and nice n thin.
stang0084 1 year ago
Just bought one from Big-5 for $19.99 (they also had the Kershaw Beacon frame lock tanto for same price, but Chill seemed a better choice for me)
The differences I noticed are mine has dual thumb stud deployment, and it does not have the stamp "RJ Martin design" like yours does, might be a big5 special edition I don't know but I haven't seen any other thumb stud versions on the 10 or so reviews I've seen on YT

I have had kershaws for years, but I personally think CRKTs are tougher.

I was watching Barats and Bereta before this (sketch comedy). I guess the Beretta, being a gun, lead me here. Anyways, I was not disappointed for the re-routing. Very interesting video. I feel that I need to keep a utility knife nearby,

you LOVE your Skyline hahahahaahaha!!!!!!!!!!!
ilikedirtx22 1 year ago
I got to handle one of these this weekend at a gun and knife show. If I had the cash left over I would have bought it! lol The booth didn't take cards. The blade is almost too fast as it's very free swinging. I actually cut myself when closing it with one hand. Usually I disengage the lock, move the blade slightly closed and move my fingers to close the knife. Instead of moving slightly, the blade swung all the way around! lol So yeah, super fast blade so be careful! I'mma get me one! lol

The only thing i hate about your knife reviews is it takes like 50 minutes before you even say anything about the blade at hand!
brokenshawdow 1 year ago
Nutn, do you know if kershaw has any knives with their serration for the full blade? I cut a lot of rope in my daily life, and i haven't found anything better for it than the kershaw serrations.

China has sold the U.S. poisonous toys & destroyed hundreds of homes w/ its toxic sheetrock, so it’s wise to arm the consumer w/ info about the country of origin, and let us decide, fully informed.

hi nutnfancy,
which knive do you think is best for EDC/self-defence, the kershaw skyline or the kershaw chill?
MATAtheFIRST 1 year ago
@MATAtheFIRST , get a Skyline. Better quality, made in the USA and date coded with the month it was made. Take pride in yer tools, dude. You don't even have to spend a mint, just a li'l bit more and you know an American made it which helps him & our economy. I bought a Skyline the week I saw Nutn's review. I carry it daily. As a final incentive, the price has come down since his review so you can't go wrong! Approx$30 on Amazon delivered or $29 at yourcornerstore
ForbinColossus 1 year ago
Just got mine in the mail from yourcornerstore. Went for the combo edge. All I needed to do was place the clip on the opposite end and slip it in my pocket. Lockup is extremely solid, and the blade came very sharp.

Hey Nutn, I can confirm your points. Decent EDC knife. Except for the sharpness out of the box, for me it was the other way round. The Skyline wasnt very sharp but the Chill was. Btw. I got it from fellow YouTuber Zenmagine as a give away (watch his competition shooting vids, he is fast and skilled). Keep up the good work! Cheers!

Crap knives. You might as well get an off brand chinese folder and save some money. Kershaw is really going downhill.
YourSelfDefenseShop 1 year ago
@YourSelfDefenseShop I disagree. Kershaw USA makes very good quality knives. I don't like all of their designs, but for the money I think they kick Benchmade's a**. I have had to send back more brand new BM knives than I ever have with Kershaw. Plus Kershaw's warrent department is way better than BM's.
tribunation 1 year ago
@YourSelfDefenseShop
I think Kershaw has crap quality, the display models of kershaws at the knife shops I been in really show how bad they "age" plus the speed of deployment on their assisted knives aren't fast.
but I would buy kershaw any day over Bench made even if BM has superior quality.
eradimatrix 1 year ago
@YourSelfDefenseShop serious question for ya. If you really think kershaw is crap, what knives do you like? and please dont say BM.
pitbullhinson 1 year ago
@pitbullhinson Kershaw has some cool knives (I.E. Ram, Tyrade,). I was specifically commenting on the Kershaw Chill. Take a look at Kershaw's newest designs and it is obvious that their quality is going downhill. Ever since they parted ways with Ken Onion, I haven't seen one design that was exciting.
In regards to which knives I like. Spyderco, Benchmade, Cold Steel, SOG, and even CRKT are companies that are showing more promise for me than Kershaw is at this point.
YourSelfDefenseShop 1 year ago
Yup, Kershaw is probably my favorite overall brand, due mostly to bang for the buck. And I love the frame lock and SpeedSafe opening features specifically.
Hey have you ever thought about getting Veri on to a nutn gag reel? Just thinkin'. Not that she doesn't have anything else to do or anything...
Love you guys!

Like the Kershaw clip better than the SOG Flash 1. SOG does bury deep in the pocket, but the Kershaw grips much tighter. SOG seems kind of loose to me.
