I actually had to watch this video 3 times to work out what he did wrong. They're racing drivers, let them get on with it. It's racing, not syncronized driving.

Power tried to go around the outside, taking the wider line which should have theoretically given him a better drive.

I don't get how it was blocking at all. He was driving around the track, just like anyone else. He didn't cut infront of anyone.

He wouldn't have asked for such punishment, even because he'd have more advantage in points championship over Dario Franchitti (who restarted 4th). Barnhart, on the other hand, applied a very stupid rule for that track, based on the fact that it was made clear several times in drivers' meetings.

Again, very stupid rule. If Power weren't on blacks, he surely could've passed Helio.

I normally dont watch Indy cars i am more a a NASCAR fan, so i am not a rule expert. It seems like they just wanted to award a race to 2nd place, why not just black flag every car for any reason until you get your driver in 1st place. Helio might of intentnally blocked and might not have. What are you complaining about? Indycar rules states that the leader CAN NOT take the inside line into the corner. Helio did take the inside line, that's the overtaking line, that's why he was penalized. Stupid rule, but the ruling was correct.

I like how there are rules that are unknown to the fans and even the announcers that exist in this series. What kind of racing series has a rule that you can't drive on the inside line unless you are passing? Listen to the announcers...they don't even mention it, likely because they don't know about it. Furthermore, it's a horrible rule. I never thought I'd say this, but it's actually worse than when CART painted a line on the track and made drivers pick inside or outside entering the corner

Helio passed Power, then got set up for the next corner... If there was any blocking, Dixon came close to smacking into Power's right front. But there was nothing worthy of a penalty here.

i dont see any blocking at all. helio kept the racing line and will tried to pass on the outside line. they kept their lines and did not touch. helio had the shorter distance to go with a better launch off the corner and will took the longer route and did not get as good as a launch as helio. simple: helio better line and better launch. dont know whare the helll the penalty occured.

You can see before the apex, helio is driving with his mirrors as will tries the outside line; helio reacts to will's second try at a passing line, which IS considered blocking. Not as obvious as helio's block in detroit, but similar. He does this all the time on ovals.

this is a horseshit call and a horseshit rule. he wasnt even close to blocking he held the low line and will power took the high line. this stupid ass rule says you're supposed to give the low line to a driver trying to overtake you. if i am in first this late in the race i am not giving anything to anyone. this is why i fall asleep anytime i watch IndyCar. the racing is mostly single file the hole way and when it gets exciting the officials have to shit all over it.

Helio blocked. The inside was defined by race officials at the drivers meeting as only for overtaking. The leader doesn't need to overtake anybody so why is he there? Will Power was faster going through the straight away and went for the pass but Helio blocked him. It's that simple folks.

Be thankful there was some controversy that made this parade around an airfield exciting.

'm not saying it's right but the rules say that on a road course you MUST approach the corner entry on the OUTSIDE half of the track. If you look at 0:08 you can see that every other car but Power and Helio are approaching the braking zone to the outside of the corner, the standard racing line. The rule says you can't prevent someone from overtaking you (on the inside) by taking the inside line in the braking zone. Forcing Power to the outside is the definition of blocking in the IRL. Bad rule?

@cjmedwell The part you said "(on the inside)" isn't in the rules. It's passing in general, and helio tried to prevent both the inside & the outside lines before the corner. Then in the corner he kept will wide. But he should have been given 3rd at least. I think what was wrong with the situation is those cones shouldn't be on the inside of the corner but the outside, so it's more of a hairpin, slowing it down and making it easier to pass in general.

As a fan of racing sport, I say that was a big time bogus call; I am outraged and infuriated at race officials, how can they rob someone of a victory earned at the track. I have seen the incident many times and I see nothing wrong with Helio’s driving, it was a racing maneuver, Helio picked the lane that was best for him and he held it. Race official Brian Barnhart made an obvious wrong call but didn’t have the balls to admit he was wrong.
