i agree -- you hit the nail on the head with everything you said! it's one thing to speak to fellow relatives or friends in another language (this is when a lot of people get ignorant and/or prejudiced; not knowing what foreigners are saying on the land they grew up in/on.)
but if you want to survive and get by, like you said - learn the BASICS at LEAST of the native language! it's important and vital if you want to get by.
i can handle more now! ....yes they are....i mean shit why should every hispanic have to know spanish? some of us know italian, some know japanese and so on and so forth. the point is yeah heritage is good, but you shouldnt be a dick about it and try force it on the others. thats just messed up man
ya know whats funny, i agree with trinidadnomad to some extent....you should learn basic anything when you travel to other countries....and those indians at your school i've had ugly run ins with them....they've only ever been rude to me, and FOR ONCE i didn't start shit... lol
I know what yuor saying and I completely understand. However, The U.S. doesn't have an official language, and it never will because we are an immigrant country. So to say that every person should learn english is a little bit biased. When the europeans came, no body spoke teh same languages, so it is similarly the same today. So yes I agree, but it doesn't always take effect. Other countries learn english cause they want to, not becaus they have to. you know what i mean?
Well, to an extent, it is. For example, the schools teach spanish down here where as in northern massachusetts, they may teach french or dutch, or even German aswell as english so that universally everyone can understand each other within the nation. To make something like that a law, however, would be unjustifiable and unconstitutional based on the rights of immagrents, who if it weren't for them, most of us would never have been here.
i get ya man. i mean we dont have a official language but we do for the most part speak english correct? i mean im learning spanish cause i want to and i know a bit and its easier for me to deal with people, but its just messed up people go around to an area that speaks a different language and demand them to speak your language...its just fucked up.
of course it's biased, but if you want to speak afrikaans in new zealand, go ahead! you may be confronted with frustration but what do you expect? regardless of the fact this nation has no "official language", the majority of us (over 90%) speak fluent english.
it makes sense to do so. it's not ignorant to think otherwise, though; i'm just saying: if you want to survive in a predominant english-speaking nation, it helps to know the language. a lot. like, a real lot.
its very original.
