Even though his style is not my cup of tea and I'm not a great lover of blues, This totally blew me away...... What an AMAZING Artist, just Listen to the WHOLE piece, and I will admit that this is just Unbelievable.
my dad plays in a band with howard. howard can play over a four octave range on a single harmonica using his own technique of overblowing reeds. AMAZING
my dad plays in a band with howard. howard can play over a five octave range on a single harmonica using his own technique of overblowing reeds. AMAZING
i just started learning the harmonica ( i play guitar lots of years ). after watching this i dont know if i should quit right now or if i should get motivated.. i guess the 2nd one. cheers to all harmonica begginers! we can make it guys!
@odingr Just keep it on :) , bu all keys this is not C major key, learn positions , technique , find your own style and never give up, maybe you can put away harmonica for some time but than come back. Never give up !
@odingr I just started to learn the harmonica as well and I'm totally confusing how could he make so much effect like this! = =But we can make it guyz
yeah this guy is out of the park as far as technical skill goes, and he brings a great, nuanced feeling to his play.
I was watching one of the sample videos he had up on his harmonica school website (he has to get points for a good format for an online school, even if you'd prefer to learn on your own), and the technique he's using to get a lot of that full, accordian/bagpipe sound is very advanced TB technique, though he himself says he prefers puckering for single notes.
@Fartmakerindigestion You're not speechless, that's the bottle of vodka you just chugged. Check out the harmonica solo at the end of my band's new Amazing Grace video. And get off the sauce, man!
but I think Howard Levy is really good at him style~he doesn't try to do something like Terry McMillan (though I know he is so good also !). In this case , he just try to do something harp can do in this song to show us Amazing in another way. It's really touch my heart, so I don't think that you say "then u know how to play" is good. I think Howard Levy know what was he doing but you don't understand.
Howie is the best musician I have ever known; you should hear him play piano. Great harp work with the Balkan Rhythm Band in Chicago, before he got together with Bela. I met Howie in grad school at Northwestern in 1970, and was totally blown away by his marvelous talents. God Bless you Howard Levy.
I do know that Howard is playing a low Eb harp starting out in 2nd position, going to 1st, then 12th and back to 2nd only because I had a high Eb in my box to figure it out. Aside from that...he continues to blow me away!
No one comes close to this man musically. A unique talent. He is the best no matter what kind of music he plays. I'd like to know how to do the "drone" effect too. Anybody know where to get info on this?
Not to try to explain the genius that is Howard, from who I had one short lesson in the back roo of the now ex-Zephyr Club in Salt Lake City on a Flecktones tour years ago, but part of it is basic tongue-blocking. Baically, there are many sympathetic tones you can get when you block holes in between with your tongue. Star with blow 1 and 4, putting your tongue on the wall between 2 and 3. then draw 1 and 4. then blow 1 and 3. then draw 2 and 4. Then draw 4 and 6. Just a start, the man is genius

5.04 - 5.30 sounds like accordian, a true master of his art, can you take the diatonic harp any further than Howard has taken it!
dan32113 2 years ago
sry but i don't really like this he doesn't give me the spirit of amaizing grace, it is just playing nothing more ...
Look at Terry McMillan then u know how to play Amaizing grace :)

Besides being an insanely talented harmonica player (how does he do some of these things?), Howard is also a wonderful musician.
Thanks for sharing!

its a regular diatonic harp. that's why this guy is so insane, he's such a freak with this instrument he doesnt even need a chromatic
