I remember the first time I heard this as a kid. The 11 percussions beats section was scaring me but I could not understand why. I still have chills every time I hear this part.
Long as I have been out of the music work this piece has always and will inspire me to finally get back into what I have truly missed and loved. Thank you Stravinsky absolute amazing!
I would not label the Evocation of the Ancestors very joyous, personally. I find it extraordinarily haunting. Then again, I am still in the process of overcoming a great fear of this piece. :) This is helping sooooo so much!
@meowkie A fear instilled because of the character of the piece, or because Disney scares the pants off of every kid in the audience during this part in Fantasia? ;)
@FerreTrip Hahaha, excellent point. I must have been crazy or something, though -- it was the music, not the nature of the animation coupled with the music, that terrified me most. I'm practically over it though. :D YouTube and research was a great help, and this series just gave me such amazing understanding of the piece that I *embraced* the fact that it's kind of supposed to make you feel scared. :)

Known this piece for years but didn't understand it anywhere near as I do now. Thank you MTT, SFS, Droidean.

The bassdrum guy doesn't seem to hit the drum as hard as he can.

Its because he is playing the drum as though it is an instrument... not as though its something you 'just hit as hard as you can.'
