  • Interesting video. Looks like effective armor.

  • Arrow tests are always douious, as most people test armor by shoting an arrow from point blank at an unmoving target fixed to an unmoving surface. When you can penetrate armor under such conditions, keep in mind that an archer would almost never get such a good shot and most actual hits would have much less penetration power.

Also, the point of armor is not just to make the wearer invulnerable, but also to make injuries survivable. If the arrow sticks 1 cm out of the inside, it's still good.

  • Good armor, but by no means impenetrable by most arrows...I don't think they were using very powerful bows in the test. Alexander himself sustained several such wounds from projectiles while wearing this kind of armor.

  • @mzmadmike also,my perasonal experience with leather armour takesthe form of a vambrace made of thick leather strips attatches to more flexible leather each strip about 4 or so millimetres thick maybe more, and. i swear itfelt so stiff and tough i actually felt the need to ask if those strips wernt made of WOOD

in regards to this poject they neglected a just as crucial part of the linothorax, reeinforcing scales. at the least a few rows across the bell region, and sometimes on the shoulders.

  • How much cheese was involved?

  • @MrColuber find this logo:

"On The Expansionism Of The Neighbouring Countries … And How The Greek State Officially Encourages Expansionist Ideologies"

  • @MrColuber Greece are ocupator on Macedonian teritory since 1913, and that teritories was never been greece.see their map of ocupaiting the all teritories that now belong to Greece. MAKEDONIA NA MAKEDONCITE Najgolem pozdrav i da se opametis.

  • @MrColuber Don't tell lies. Let try to lern something new.Reed this on greek if yoy know macedonian DECA NA MODEA. NA NASE IMO KAIN DANAJVE. When you will learn Macedonian - MAKEDONSKI Then you will know to read all text that are write on macedonian , and you will see that greece are not the same with me MAKEDONCITE.

  • @endrovski8 your language is more relative to bulgarian, ancient macedonian is more relative to greek language.Dont call your language macedonian...you are slav and you know it.Your names and surnames are the same with the other slavic people. If you are a macedonian then other slavs =macedonians? No.

  • @kostaz88 On the end you say it very well, we ,as call as now Slovenian are the same peaple and we are all MAkedonci. .You are lost people, and you should to find Danajci ( your root) in Sudan. Not here. Alexsander Macedonian are the Hellas, or Greek or Elin the same as Hitler is Judas. Yor language and Macedonian language are familiar as Svahili and Marsians. Go to your land in Afrika. By,by and learn Histori. I am Macedonian - MAKEDONEC and that meen somthing, that you will never learn it. :)

  • @endrovski8 Man can you prove what you say ?You say whatever you want.I speak with facts man.Your ethnic group is called SLAVS every book write this YOU cannot deny this. Our language is similar to african languages ?PROVE IT! The ANCIENT MACEDONIAN LANGUAGE was a GREEK DIALECT go read it in a history book.IF YOU ARE MACEDONIAN CAN YOU TELL ME THE MEANING OF ALEXANDER,PHILIP,MACEDONIA ?..these words cannot be translated to your language ,in other way you can understand bulgarian and serbian

  • @kostaz88 Because, you mention it those name that in not Greeks, -- DO YOU KNOW THE MEANING OF IT.

Than tell me who is buried in "Heronea" , and why on top of it is a statue of Lion, and lion is not your symbol. You have a hole in your head my little fashist, and one day it will become black hole if you doing this way. Go with luck, you will need it. This talk wit mind like AMEBA is going nowhere, and if you have same gene with macedonians, then you have a father MAKEDONEC , but wrong languag.

  • @endrovski8 Yes i can tell you Alexander in GREEK means "protector of men" ,Plilip means "friend of horses" and macedonian means "highlander" .Did you knew it ? The lion of heronea means that the warriors who are buried fought with bravery. The funny thing is that there is a inscription on the lion statue that YOU CANNOT READ IT WHILE I CAN.Obviously you dont know nothing about history...

  • @endrovski8 Wow another slav who plays Greek!

  • interesting that it's laminated. I wonder if anything like this was used during the meadieval period? I've only ever come across quilted versions (except for the ones reinforced with metal of course).

Here's an odd thought prompted by the cost issue and the need to 'waterproof' (and because it is early in the morning) Do you think they might also have used materials like Papyrus?

  • @Hudde68 i´m by no means an expert on armor, but i do not think they would, part of the strength of Cloth is that due to the many interwove threads its very hard to tear or cut. Did you ever try to rip apart a pice of strong cloth? Or maybe a twisted arm of a shirt? And its strenght comes that the threads are forming a circle and the forces are always transmitted to other threads. And as far as i know papyrus is not interwoven. wich makes the force transport much better.

  • greeks was different people from Macedonians. Macedonians was so different people of " todays called Greeks" because that days greeks was called DANAJCI , so reed the histori diferent

If the greeks are Macedonians or the oposite, They will not call todaj Greeks or Hellens, or Elades or I don't know how.

  • @endrovski8 Historians seem to agree that the people of ancient Macedon were speaking an Hellenic language related to the language spoken by the Greeks (in the same way that latin was related to Sabine and German is related to Dutch). Culturally speaking, the Macedonians were trying very hard to be seen as Greeks.

  • @endrovski8 Lol are you arrogant?Greeks or Hellenes divide to different TRIBES:Doreans,Ioanians(Thats how turks call us..),Aiolians,MACEDONIANS..and so on .Just like your ethnic group Slavs divide to different nations Russians,Bulgarians,Serbs and you Scopjeans (fake macedonians)..YOU HAVE SIMILAR LANGUAGE,NAMES,TRADITIONS.

  • Hmm. How much would armor like this cost, especially by the standards of the Greeks and Macedonians at the time of Alexander? To my understanding, linen was rather difficult to make and this sort of armor would need a considerable amount of linen, making it impractical to make for average troops. For officers, maybe, but wouldn't other and cheaper armor, like leather, be the standard due to cost restrictions?

    Or am I mistaken?

  • You were mistaken on the reffering of Macedonians,as a different group from the rest of the Greeks

  • .....

They were a different group from the Greeks.

  • No they were not.People who don't know Greek history very good thing that.Macedonians were Greek Dorians, just like the lacedemonians and Spartans and this is proven by their similar dilect. Also,Macedonians and Epirots who were in the north, kept an aristocratic and tribal society, and for that reason,an Athenian called them barbarians. But demosthenes called everyone barbarians if they were not from Athens.Overall, they were Greeks

  • Hey I'm doing some research on this stuff can anyone point me to some helpfull information?

  • what kind of glue do you use? how many layers on linen? and do you cut the pattern before or after that layers of linen are glued together?

  • I'm in the process of doing a research project on this, and he's VERY corect when he says it is EXTREMELY difficult to find information on the linothorax, but it's SO AMAZING! I wish I had the time to make one, my teacher would be blown away...

  • WOW this was cool!

  • Do you have any idea how much linen material would be needed to equip army with this kind of armour?!?!

Do you have any idea how expensive it would be, and how time it would consume to make one?

Leather was much more available, much cheaper and much much EASIER to make armour out of it.

  • Do you know how many cows you need for that much leather? How long it takes to properly cure and tan? How hard it is to stitch leather (since rivets would require a LOT of metal)? They used cloth. It's well documented. What type of cloth and how is subject to debate, but it was cloth. They've even found some.

  • You need a huge amount of labor and material to equip an army with any kind of armor. Yet they did.

  • @mzmadmike Not its not well documented that they used cloth, is stated in passing only. Its also very uncertain as what `exactly` was meant, did they look good in their linen armour or that was unusual, and that is the important thing. Even the word linothorax has a unclear historical traceability, as translations do vary, almost as much as the different images of this type of armour.

  • @733835 Leather would be logistically infeasible, and works differently, and it's clearly stated as not metal. Combined with samples that are cloth and depictions that show skirted strips, the questions are what type and weight of cloth and what type of glue.

  • @mzmadmike the cloth found was mycenean period was a tiny piece and was more likely part of the greaves.

and ive fealt leather armour in this case a hard cour boulli (boiled leather ) vambrace the stuff was rock solid.

and something tells me would have been very easy to know how to work it since every second village in greece would have had a local leatherworker who madeleather goods of all shapes sizes and oughness. linen however was ALOT more expensive especially for typical greek hoplites

  • Noob, go back to RTW.

  • Comment removed

  • wen i first heard of it a few years back i was like: how can that be armour? they probably mean tunic! but then i did a little research and i was like hey! cool!

  • Very well done! History students should do more of these kinds of projects, which give information as well as understanding of ancient knowledge.

  • great vid
